Can't think of other examples but I bet it happened more than once, why were guys like Napoleon banished and not executed after getting defeated? Seems like you're setting yourself up for more trouble than it's worth, and I don't know if the fear of creating some kind of martyr cult is a good argument

hm yeah good point, didn't really think about that, it would propably throw the whole power structure into question. but so would just shoving the guy away, or did they just tell the people that he was retired or something?
