Nah, man, in old times they had literal caste systems with untouchables (

(The old Shinto view of what's "unclean" is suspiciously Old Testament Jewish to the point of "parturition huts," menstrual isolation, sex rendering someone unfit for religious pilgrimages, and both birth and death being such sources of pollution that the very ill, or expectant mothers, were banished from the Emperor's palace to their family houses.)
