Anthony Shore, the "Tourniquet Killer", murdered four females in Texas between 1986 and 1995. His nickname came from his use of a ligature made from a toothbrush or bamboo stick. He was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on June 25, 1962. His parents, Rob and Deanna, were both in the Air Force and stationed at Ellsworth AFB; Deanna was given an honorable discharge after getting pregnant with him. After Rob was discharged in 1965, the family went to California. They would have two daughters, Laurel and Gina, after Tony, and moved around numerous times. Rob Shore explained that these frequent moves were due to job offers as he was a computer tech at a time when computers consisted entirely of room-sized mainframes.

Tony was a bright and super-competitive child, always striving to outdo his peers. He mastered musical instruments easily and was mentioned in a Sacramento newspaper for performing a Bach piece at age 5. His athletic and social skills however left something to be desired. Unlike his sisters, he had trouble adapting to new schools. Deanna said he had a short temper and thought very highly of himself. "He liked using big words. He'd raise his hand and say 'I need to defecate.'" Although Tony did well in school, that wasn't enough--he also expected compliments for his academic performance. The one teacher he remembered as an adult was the one who didn't like him. He did not get along with other kids and was bullied a lot, which further harmed his considerable ego.

From childhood he displayed predatory and sociopathic behavior. At age 5, when the family was living in Kansas, Tony killed a neighbor's kitten when they told him he couldn't play with it. He later tried to stab his sister Gina in the head with a screwdriver

Gina said they would bicycle around the neighborhood together and Tony would decide to harass a random neighbor girl. He'd get Gina to knock on her door and get her to come out, after which he'd grab and fondle the girl. Gina said that the girls were terrified of him. One day she knocked on a door, her English teacher answered it, and she decided she was never going to do this again. The Shores moved to Montgomery, Alabama in 1971 and Tony was extensively bullied by other children at school. They moved to the Orlando, Florida area the following year. When Tony was 13, he told his sister that he and some friends had beaten up a homeless man in some woods behind a supermarket and that he thought they killed him. He told Gina to not tell anyone about it.

When Tony began the 9th grade in the fall of 1976, his parents got divorced and Deanna took the kids with her to California, her home state. Rob did not challenge her custody of the kids, saying he'd rather she raise them than him. The Shores were both cheating on one another by the early '70s and had been having increasing arguments over the years. Deanna also claimed Rob beat her, something he'd never done before. Rob claimed he had to go out somewhere and Deanna became upset him with and threw a beer stein at his head, so he lost it and attacked her. Tony sometimes tried to break up their arguments, and that Rob beat him with a belt, which the latter denied ever doing.

Tony didn't especially miss his father; Deanna claimed that at 14, he wanted to replace him as the head of the household. However she wouldn't have that and let it be known that he was still under her authority for another few years. One night while she was sleeping, Tony took her car keys and went for a joyride. She called police.

In Sacramento, Deanna was taking college courses and working several jobs, a result of which she was rarely home outside of stopping to make dinner. She thought Tony to be helpful around the house, but she wasn't around enough to know much about he was doing. Tony remained a perpetual show-off. He played in a jazz band, starred in theatrical productions, and claimed he was nearly buried in an avalanche while hiking one day. During this incident, he said, God came to him in a vision and told him to reprimand his family for smoking or using swear words. Deanna said that her son told so many tall tales you never knew whether to believe him or not.

Tony was growing into a handsome young man, and he was something of a fashionista who indulged in the latest trendy clothing styles. Deanna thought he resembled Gunsmoke actor Pernell Roberts. He claimed he joined ballet classes to meet girls, and he was never lacking in female companionship. He continued to be aggressive around girls, and much like when he was younger, he would use Gina as bait to lure them since they were more likely to accept rides from a stranger if there was a female in the car with him. After Tony got the girl in his car, he would tell Gina that she had someplace else to be and drop her off.
Anonymous No.18142626 [Report] >>18142715
Afterwards he would brag about doing sexual stuff with the girls whether they consented to it or not. Gina felt bad about helping lure them. She said Tony saw nothing wrong with any of this and "it was just what all the guys did in the '70s." Deanna remarried when Tony was 17, he didn't like her new husband, and decided to leave home. Shore attended community college, dropped out, went back to Texas in 1983, got hired by Southwestern Bell, and got married the following year, to a woman named Gina. They became the parents of two daughters, Amber and Tiffany, born only 14 months apart. According to his sister, he continued prowling for high school girls despite being a married man in his 20s with children of his own.

On September 26, 1986, Laurie Tremblay, 15, left her house to catch a city bus to her school for troubled kids in Montrose. One hour later, her strangled body was found behind a restaurant three miles from home. Police were confused by the murder since the girl wasn't raped and none of her money was taken, even though she only had enough cash for a one-way fare. However, none of the regulars on the bus route had ever seen her riding it before. Tony Shore was not considered a suspect. Some of Shore's relatives noticed he was acting strangely as of late; his mother-in-law wondered if he wasn't on drugs.

Gina visited her brother in 1989, just after earning a psychology degree, and began suspecting that he was molesting his older daughter Amber, who was then 5, as he insisted on bathing with her and acted a little more kissy and touchy with her than was the norm for a father. Gina told her mother, but Deanna didn't believe it. She said she was welcome to call Child Protective Services if she really thought something was going on. Gina did call CPS but they never looked into her claim. Deanna herself visited Tony shortly afterwards and didn't see anything abusive happening, but was surprised to find absolutely no food in the house and that Tony and his wife's bedroom was totally off-limits to the kids. However strange this was, Deanna didn't feel it was her business questioning how another woman ran her household and so she said nothing (Tony's ex-wife has declined interview requests over the years).

On April 16, 1992, Maria Del Carmen Estrada, a 21 year old Mexican immigrant, left home to go to work. Later that morning, her body was found in the drive-through of a Dairy Queen half a mile from her home. She was nude from the waist down and strangled with a ligature bound so tightly it was embedded in her flesh. No connection between the two murders was made despite their similarities as six years had passed between them. On October 19, 1993, an intruder broke into the home of 14 year old Selma Janske, tied her up, raped her, and fled. This attack was also judged the work of a random maniac. On August 8, 1994, Diana Rebollar, 9, left her home on a trip to the grocery store. Her body was found behind a vacant building later that day, beaten, raped, and strangled.

Throughout all this time, nobody suspected Tony Shore of anything. He was by all appearances a sociable, successful man who made friends easily. After doing a telephone installation at Ernie's on Banks Bar in Fort Worth, he became a regular musician at the bar, playing in a blues band there every Tuesday night. The bartender, Ramiro Gonzalez, needed a phone line installed at his apartment and Shore was right there to do the job for him. His wife didn't appear to be aware of his actions either. They got divorced in April 1993 after Tony admitted to seeing another woman. He obtained custody of their daughters and collected $75 a week in child support payments from Gina.

At some point, Deanna claimed her daughter-in-law began calling her on the phone drunk and rambling that she didn't know a lot of things about her son and that he'd killed somebody. Deanna just wrote it off as a bitter ex-wife's alcoholic nonsense.

On June 26, 1995, Dana Sanchez, 16, was reported missing by her mother and didn't come back. She was encountered by Shore at a phone booth on July 6 and killed by him. Shore had never been in the habit of trying to hide his victims' bodies, but Sanchez was dumped in an isolated rural location. It was a week before her remains were found, and only when an anonymous tipster called a local TV station to warn that a serial killer was on the loose and where Sanchez's body could be found. The body was extensively decomposed after a week of laying outdoors in Texas summer weather and without the killer's anonymous tip it would have been difficult to identify her.

A police task force was assembled, but they kept it low profile and did not inform the media so as to not induce panic about a serial killer being around. The cops did not publicly make any connections between the murders, but among themselves suspected they were all the work of the same person and they checked out every parolee, sex offender, boyfriend, and classmate of the victims they could find.

Shore was still not any kind of suspect despite his unusual behavior. He was arrested in February 1996 on an unrelated charge of soliciting prostitutes when he tried to pick up an undercover cop posing as a hooker. Shore was fined $122 and sentenced to three months probation. Gina paid another visit to her brother that spring and again was horrified by what she saw. When Tony went out for the evening, he locked the door and left his daughters inside. Then he and some friends invited Gina and a friend of hers to do drugs with them. Instead, her friend called CPS to report Tony, but again nothing came of it.

CPS spokeswoman Estella Olguin said that if Tony had been investigated, she had no way to know it as any records would have been destroyed after three years if no charges were filed. That said, Gina believed there were a lot of reasons to look into her brother, including his house having no electricity and the windows being boarded up. Meanwhile their father was now living in Clear Lake Shores near Tony's place in Houston, but Rob wasn't very close to his son anymore. The two ran into each other at a festival one spring and mostly exchanged blank stares. Rob's second wife Rose thought Tony was on some kind of drugs. In fact the only time Tony visited his father was when he wanted to show off a new girlfriend.
Anonymous No.18142649 [Report] >>18144723
At age 33, he still demonstrated an ability to pull high school girls and his latest was Amy Lynch, an 18 year old class senior. He'd worked on her parents' phone line and after seeing a photo of her in the house asked to meet her. Rose Shore said that Tony enthusiastically visited them over Easter 1995 with Lynch and his daughters and Lynch said that he'd dictated all of their wardrobes. Rose said his need for control was apparent. The girls were smartly and well-dressed, but they had to obey all of his commands.

In spring 1997, Tony called his mother up and said he and Lynch were getting married and if she could watch the girls while they were on their honeymoon. Deanna said she didn't know if she could fit it into her schedule, after which Tony said angrily "If you don't see them now you never will!" Although Deanna was preoccupied with other matters at that time, she reluctantly gave in. When Amber and Tiffany arrived in Sacramento, their grandmother immediately knew that something was amiss. The girls, now 12 and 13, were mum and hardly said anything. The two were always together all the time, which even for siblings was a little unusual, and although it was a hot June day, they were wearing heavy clothing.

Deanna finally decided to solve this odd behavior by splitting them up and sending Tiffany to stay with her Aunt Gina in Seattle. Deanna told her she was starting to believe they'd been molested and giving the girls some time apart from each other might be a good idea. After Tiffany went up to Washington, the truth came out when Gina was complaining about something that had happened at her job recently. She exclaimed "You ever feel that something's totally unjustified?" Tiffany turned white as a sheet and replied "How do you know about that!?"

Tiffany said that her father's girlfriend had been in the hospital being treated for an injury sustained in a car accident when he raped her. She added that he'd been molesting Amber for as long as she could remember and was always told that it was none of her business. Stunned, Gina called Deanna, who then called police. This was relayed to California authorities. Aside from abusing the girls, Tony was a drug user and had even drugged the girls. Medical exams of them showed evidence of injuries to the anogenital region. Tony was charged with sexual battery of minors under the age of 13. The local CPS branch in Houston had been getting complaints about him for years, none of them acted on due to lack of evidence--back in 1995, Amber had told the school nurse that she was being molested. The nurse contacted CPS, but after they visited the home, the girls, fearing their father's wrath, denied that anything happened and the investigation was dropped. Deanna called her son but he denied everything. He was upset with her for calling police and the whole conversation sounded unusually detached and unemotional.

Shore's public defender Bill Gifford worked out a plea deal. He would plead guilty to two counts of lewd acts on a minor under 14 and paid a $500 fine and got eight years of supervised probation. He would also have to register as a sex offender and do community service. The conviction would be stricken from the record afterward if Shore obeyed all terms and conditions of his probation. He would also have to report to authorities in person every three months and see his probation officer every two weeks. In addition, Shore was banned from going within 100 yards of a school or daycare center, although an exception was made for Field Elementary School, which was across the street from his residence on East 18th Street in Houston, and he would still be allowed to see his daughters.
Anonymous No.18142655 [Report]
His sentence seemed a bit light given the years of significant abuse he'd subjected Amber and Tiffany to, but evidence of the abuse was mostly circumstantial and the fact that the girls were not currently living in Texas would have made the case more difficult to prosecute. Deanna didn't know about the plea bargain until she called up and asked. They told her they didn't want the girls to feel guilty, but she didn't understand what a child would have to feel guilty about. Further, Amber and Tiffany lived in fear that their father would come back and get them.

All the same, Tony found his sentence almost intolerable. Although he had committed four as yet unsolved murders, he filed a motion to withdraw his plea weeks after accepting it. His attorney said he'd only learned of the sentencing conditions 15 minutes before accepting the plea deal and he assumed accepting it would allow him to keep his job at Southwestern Bell, but the company fired him anyway. The judge denied the motion, and an appeals court upheld the sentence.

All attempts by Deanna and Gina to have him investigated further went nowhere. Gina tried to tell the Houston DAs about his habit of cruising for teenage girls and non-consensual sexual interactions with females. She believed he must have abused dozens of girls. They paid no attention to her. And although Tony had twice failed drug tests during his first year of probation, he suffered no punishment for it. That his murder spree was finally discovered came almost as an accident; the four victims' cases had long since gone cold and the task force investigating the murders disbanded.

As part of his probation conditions, Shore had to submit a DNA sample, which he did without any apparent complaint despite all the other things he whined about, although he confided to his wife Amy that he had a bad feeling about this and it might be necessary for the two of them to flee the country. The DNA sample matched skin found under the fingernails of Maria Estrada. Yet it still took five more years to get a match; he submitted the sample in 1998 and it was not matched until October 2003. The main reason for that was that the Houston PD's crime lab was run in a "grossly inept manner" with poorly trained staff, poor lab conditions, and most of the DNA tests done there were considered useless. The lab was closed down at the end of 2002. Several samples from high profile murder cases were given to an independent lab in Dallas for analysis. A spokesman for the Houston PD however insisted the samples were not tested sooner because DNA testing methods had improved by 2003 and were more accurate than those available in the '90s.

Amy Shore filed for divorce in 1999 after charging Tony with increasing physical abuse. He insisted on choking her as part of sex. When she refused, he drugged her and choked her while she was passed out. She claimed he would have killed her except that she faked being passed out. Amy also added that he had a collection of child pornography. Shore was arrested in August 2000 for drug possession. After divorcing his wife, he began seeing another woman named Pauline Cody. They dated for two years until he drugged Cody and tried to choke her during sex.

By 2003, Shore was living in a modest brick house off Uvalde Drive with another new girlfriend named Lynda and had adopted her three children. He was now making a living by operating a tow truck. Lynda was completely stunned when police surrounded their house the night of October 26 as Shore had never told her anything much about his past. Investigators believe he was fully expecting to be caught. Shore attempted suicide a few weeks after his arrest.

Shore confessed to killing Maria Estrada, Dana Sanchez, and Diana Rebollar. He also confessed to raping Selma Janske as well as murdering Laurie Tremblay, which he was never suspected in. In each incident, he claimed to have a justifiable reason for it. Investigators have debated whether or not Shore could have committed more, as yet unsolved murders, but after all the evidence was reviewed, they felt confident that Dana Sanchez was his last victim as they didn't know of any other murders in the Houston area with a M/O similar to the four known victims.

In regards to Laurie Tremblay, Shore said he had met the girl a few weeks before her murder when he was in his work van for the phone company. She came up to him and asked if he had a cigarette. Shore offered Tremblay a ride if she needed one, which she accepted. He gave her another ride a few days later and she started developing an innocent crush on him. The two would exchange kisses and hellos and goodbyes and soon Tremblay began getting rides from Shore on a regular basis. On September 26, it was raining out and Tremblay got her usual lift from Shore, who at that point decided it was time to take things a bit further.
Anonymous No.18142670 [Report] >>18142731 >>18142758
He said that they made out for a few moments and he began undoing Tremblay's bra. The girl at this point began having second thoughts and decided she wasn't ready to go all the way. She told Shore that she didn't want to do this and she was going to tell on him. Tremblay was in a hysterical panic; Shore tried to calm her down and said if she didn't want sex, he would accept that but it did no good and she continued to yell and threaten to tell someone what he did, so he hit her in the back of the head to try and knock her out. He got out a rope from his van and strangled her with it. He added that he'd sprained his finger while strangling Tremblay, so in the subsequent killings he used a torniquet instead. Shore said he lived in terror of being caught for months afterward and told himself he would never do this again. For several years he was able to control himself and he did give girls rides on a number of occasions without incident; Shore added that he was surprised at how readily many of them would accept rides from a total stranger.

Shore had first encountered Maria Estrada walking to work in January 1992 and thought she was "extremely pretty." He offered her a ride but she declined. Estrada replied in Spanish that her name was Carmen, she couldn't speak English, and she didn't accept rides from strangers. However, her normal route happened to coincide with Shore's, so he would see her every morning. It had become apparent that Shore had a particular type he went for, a young girl or woman with dark, Hispanic features. Eventually, one day when it was raining, Estrada gave in and accepted a ride. She rode with Shore a few more times after that.
Anonymous No.18142677 [Report] >>18142708 >>18142731 >>18142944 >>18143336
Shore implied that he particularly liked Estrada out of all his victims and wanted her to "belong" to him. He began improving his Spanish skills so he could communicate with her better. On April 16, they pulled up behind the Dairy Queen. Estrada was willing to engage in some intimacy with Shore but wouldn't further than that. She said she liked Shore, but not necessarily in a romantic way and especially not in a parking lot. Shore wouldn't take no for an answer and started unbuttoning her blouse. She began thrashing around violently and trying to get out of his work van. Shore got a pair of scissors and cut off Estrada's shorts and pantyhose, but not her panties. He grabbed a piece of wood and some cord from the van, strangled Estrada with it, tossed her body outside in the parking lot, and left.

The next victim was the one he didn't kill. Shore had spotted Selma Janske walking to school in the morning and followed her back to her house, a bandanna over his mouth to conceal his identity. The front door wasn't locked and he went inside and waited for Janske to come home. Shore said he was deliberately trying to restrain his urges and hope to not kill this girl. When Janske arrived at the house and encountered him there, he told her he was robbing the place and she'd better cooperate. He then tied her up with a cord and raped her. Janske fought him and he feared he'd have to kill her. Shore said the girl was thrashing around violently. He took out his tourniquet, started to strangle her with it, and then decided he couldn't do this so he stopped and fled the house.
Anonymous No.18142683 [Report]
The next victim, Diana Rebollar, was his youngest at only 9 years old. Shore offered her a ride, raped, and strangled her in the back of his van. He felt he had no choice but to kill her because she would almost certainly tell on him. Shore was surprised at the level of resistance the little girl put up, saying that she fought him like a tiger. He felt terrible about killing a child and said he was telling himself he couldn't keep doing this.

Shore's fourth and final victim was Dana Sanchez. He spotted her at the phone booth on July 6, 1995 using the phone, an indignant expression on her face. Sanchez hung up and walked off. Shore offered her a ride and she accepted, apparently believing he was safe as he was driving a company vehicle. Sanchez said she had to get to her boyfriend's house and Shore said it was fine and he'd take her there. He drove around for a bit and engaged in idle chitchat with the girl, but his urges started overwhelming him. Shore began flirting with Sanchez, who seemed quite friendly and remarked that she was running away from home. She also told him her birthday but claimed her name was Ruby. Shore wasn't sure why she did that; perhaps she still erred on the side of caution and didn't want to tell a strange man her real name.
Anonymous No.18142687 [Report] >>18143336
They pulled into a parking lot and Shore began telling her how pretty she was. Sanchez seemed flattered but told him she already had a boyfriend and couldn't. Shore grabbed the teenager and dragged her into the back of the van. Like all the other victims, Sanchez resisted him with all her might, even biting him hard enough to draw blood. He tied her up with duct tape, but once again he knew there was no way out of this short of killing her. He strangled her with his tourniquet, threw the body in the field where it was found, and got out of there as fast as he could. Shore then admitted that he had made the anonymous phone call revealing where Sanchez's body was. He used a fake voice and gave the information the girl had given him about her name and DOB.

He was ultimately only tried for the murder of Estrada as it had the most substantial evidence. The trial began October 2004 and Selma Janske was among the witnesses for the prosecution. The jury took less than an hour to find him guilty and he was sentenced to death.

Rob Shore said he believed in the death penalty and would not object to his own son being executed if he actually committed the crimes he was accused of. Tony wrote him numerous lengthy letters from jail trying to explain away and rationalize his actions. He claimed his mother sexually abused him as a child. Deanna denied this, but agreed to undergo hypnosis in case it did in fact happen and she'd suppressed the memory, but the test failed to find anything incriminating. Rob also didn't believe she abused Tony and never bothered replying back to his son's letters.
Anonymous No.18142689 [Report] >>18145707
Deanna was 57 years old when she had to unexpectedly take in her granddaughters. They'd arrived without any clothing, bed, or shoes, and Tony had never sent her promised child support. The girls were also difficult to manage due to the abuse they'd experienced. Amber couldn't sleep unless her 130 pound dog was in the room with her and she was known to try and light her stuffed animals on fire. Tiffany had recurring nightmares about her father. Deanna remarked that they were more like psych ward patients than loving grandchildren she could bond with.

Later interviews with Tiffany Shore revealed just how nightmarish their childhood was. Their father forced them to eat spoiled food, sometimes there was no food in the house, he would force them to use the same bath water after the other had bathed, their clothes not washed, etc. The girls were unpopular at school and bullied by other children. It seemed apparent that Shore didn't care much about their well-being and may have even derived sadistic pleasure from their misery.

Tony also peppered his mother and sister with numerous letters over the years featuring the same attempts at whitewashing his crimes. Deanna's therapist told her the letters were the work of a classic sociopath. He admitted to the murders, but never really expressed any remorse for them and came up with numerous justifications, typically that the victims forced him to kill them, or that he was on drugs and not in command of his faculties.

Shore was executed at Texas's Huntsville Unit on January 28, 2018, the first execution in the US that year. He was the 546th total person the state had executed since 1976.

Trick to avoiding prostitution stings is asking the hooker if she wants to pose for nude photos. If she says no you can assume it's a cop.

Chances are if he didn't kill them he probably could have gotten away with it; Texas and Texas even moreso 30 years ago wouldn't have taken black or Hispanic girls seriously at all if they claimed he raped them.

CPS and the court system are fucking overburdened with cases they don't care about most of them unless it's particularly high profile or they can get some kind of PR advantage out of prosecuting it.

These makw mw believe it was his mother who fucked him up. Probably taught him to depise women from a young age and that sex was something you took when you wanted and that if they didn't give it to you it was because they were bad like his mom. Doesn't justify his actions, but I imagine that's what his thought process was.
