What is the origin of the western food taboo around insects and worms?

you'd rather eat worms than a pig. it looks like you're the mentally deranged ones, not us.

I think I would rather kill a dog, skin & gut it, put it on a spit and roast it until well done

You'd rather kill a sentient being to eat it rather than just picking sqirming raw meat tubes from the floor as God intended.

Insects are worms are detritivores, the literal sign of decay, rot, filth, and disease. These things were clearly not meant to be food.

Make sure you get your tongue into the depressions on the sole of the boot, that's where the dirt builds up.

There is none? If you dig through XVIII cooking books you'll find a bunch of recipes. The problem Europe is relatively cold continent and our insects are awfully small (if, for example you'd want to eat grasshoppers you risk spending more energy trying to catch them then getting from their bodies. It's more efficient to eat a panda).
