That's rather counter-intuitive desu. For that matter, just draw chicks cause men have completely different bone structures than female, so, if you use a chick for reference, you're just going to get a chick-like output.

There honestly isn't a shortage of references of thin men if you know where to look. Also doing studies will help build your intuition of how thinner men should look so you can eventually draw them in any pose.

Honestly, if you want to go down the road of drawing more accurate/convincing thin men, you'll just have to accept the biological/physiological differences between men and women. Draw women, you will end up getting a womanly form, and vice-versa.

Once you get better at drawing thin men, you should be able to figure out how to get your character's form in a way you like it.

The rule of thumb is that a mans shoulder length is 3 of his heads wide. So if you make the head slightly smaller/thinner it does the same as making the shoulders wider.

Men also have a slightly longer area between their brows and the area where their nose meets their mouth. This can be tricky to get across taking style in to account without making the head look oddly long.

Men also generally have smaller eyes, especially in stylization. Adding a little bit of a pronounced chin, even if it's just a little bump, also helps a character come across as male or more masculine.

I know I'm just sort of throwing out a bunch of ideas at you but these things might be worth keeping in mind and playing around with when you draw faces.

this is what I came up with sso far, he's moody and glum most of the time but passionate when the moemnt calls for it.
he finds a sword that posesses him and the only way to wield power is let the demon sword posess him, the demon sword is a fire spirit named caliburn..
Kai worries that the sword could take over and act on its own etc.

A good way to come up with ideas is to ask yourself a question , a thought provoking question like: what if there's a firebrigade that hunts monsters where the main character can control flame.
IIt takes some time to form an idea which I think is feasable to work a story from.
A lot of peopele are scared of using cliches and of being generic but that's sometimes where good stories form and then using a cliche and changing and subverting the reader/audiences expectations is a good way to form a story.
Think of what genres you're interested in and what story you wish to tell.
Make a list of your current favourites series and base something similiar if you don't have any idea of what you want to work on.
For example I like the art of d-grayman mangaa as it's nolstalgic, and I think how might I put my spin on the genre.
An oc has a lot to do with what colors you give the oc that reflects their character: such as gray for a reserved/cold demeanor etc.
I would suggest getting a board of references and think of how you might draw a character with a library of references on a pinterets board of all the features you like/ the ones specific to the character: such as a thief might be dressed in a msyterious way.
I think of what characters are necissary to the story.
You can even use something like a bird to design the color pallete/ facial features/hair as inspiraiton for a character!

Grids can be a crutch I would suggest using it and then comparing it to see how freehand will look, it's muscle memory afterall.
