/ALT/ - Alternative Art/Stylization General
Previous thread: >>7403910

What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly, keep discussion at a civil level.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

I've been posting on /ic/ for a long, long time, back when my art looked like pic rel. and I used to get roasted by everyone lmao. Definitely wouldn't consider myself a pro though, maybe high intermediate.

I legit think /ic/ is easily one of the most valuable art resources on the web though, it's one of the few places that won't coddle you, so I get a lot of value from it still.

Chans are like a drug. One of the few places where you can get honest opinions even if you have to filter though a lot of shit.
Trying that on other social media platforms will either lead you to get banned or you get stuck in a echo-chamber of positivity and encouragement from you little own following which they will gate keep any negativity out.

/ic/ is certainly a great resource unironically and definitely a large reason I think my art is in a much better place, personally speaking. Like you said, you aren’t coddled, which you undoubtedly are on places with voting systems like Reddit or even instagram/Twitter. The honesty is necessary to make you into the strongest artist you can, even if it hurts at first

Here's a few attempts I tried.
Top-left is the original, untouched. Top-right I made the lights cool and the shadows warm using the blues and oranges you already had on the canvas. Bottom-left is a gradient map on a layer mode above the original and I just thought it looked neat. Bottom-right is warm lights and cool shadows.
Taking some colors already on the page and blending them in other places, subtly, is a decent way to create harmony with colors. I'm a total dummy though so take all this with a grain of salt.

If he was just another closeted girly boy were I could slowly seduce in to sending me stuff in secret as his heart pounds by the fear and excitement of being expose, craving for more attention while submitting himself more and more to my will despite the fear of what it may end, that is much more fun. it's the same rake brush but with 4 different settings, i mostly use the first and second, they're useful to fill up space with "texture" quick. it works specially well when u have really clear shapes as your base, it creates an illusion of detail but retains some graphic element that i like.it got really popular after spiderverse and i've been using it ever since.

Personally I think his work is pretty good to amazing, depending on your taste. If he is falling on social media I think is more a matter of subject matter not appealing to a big enough audience or bad advertising. That are things that can be improved for sure, but this is such a fucking vague critique it's not even worth being written.

If I was the guy I would try at least do something different and unusual, like coloring or more insane designs, as good as it is, it's also generic, you trow a rock and you hit at least 20 dudes drawing cute anime girls now a days. If you don't want add something to the formula complaining you are not standing out is straight up retarded.

Here is a spread of my work in one my recent styles in which I studied for a while, I can provide you with another artstyles, tho, my range is above average. You may judge my technical skill on your own, I'm sure you will let me know what you think.

My point is exactly that, his work has indeed appeal to people with no technical knowledge in drawing, if he is receiving low engagement online I would blame less his lack of skill and more subjective aspects and how they appeal to people, because on a skill level he is already good enough to impress the majority of individuals. What he wants is engagement, a short more efficient way of achieving that would by trying standing out, because for me his biggest weakness on his art style is how visually generic it can be.

I see.
You seem competent enough to have a buncha followers already.
But the less people know you, the less people will know you. Get yourself out there - join collaborative drawing sessions (e.g. drawpile thread), art discords, /dad/, etc. If you don't know how or aren't willing to interact and feed the algorithm, you'll still build a following, but it'll be slower. (I should know).
I think you're decent enough for some people to start asking for your blog. All it takes, ideally, is the right user(s) to repost your shit. Keep practicing, improving and alladat.

You're clearly going for something very different than OP. Your advice was essentially to do the kind of work you're doing which I don't think is what they want.

OP is showing fundamental technical issues that I don't think they should run away from or try to cover up with gimmicks even if it would get them more followers. Not being able to convincingly convey a basic form like a cylinder is something even normies can clue in on. Overall they seem like someone who has hyper focused on drawing a cute anime face (which they do well) to the detriment of basic fundamentals, which is not uncommon.

Maybe, I looked trough my catalog to see if I could find any generic anime girl in it, but even my drawing of the female form often has some retarded shit going on.

I still think he should try to be less generic, it does help on what he wants.

I'm glad to hear you consider my art worth studying! You have a good grasp of values which is essential in shading. I personally like doing it in blocks first (either solid black or desaturated & dimmer version of a certain colour) and if I feel like painting I use a textured brush to smudge it. Keep the strokes as minimal as possible to prevent "muddiness"

My english knowledge is quite basic but I hope my remarks came across haha

Agreed, especially the comment on failing to draw basic shapes. That's an embarrassing realization at this point but it's not the first time my disinterest in fundamentals has bitten me. I have work to do there for sure, thank you.

>>7564994
I see the point about generic for sure. I think that I struggle with making fanart in particular interesting. I end up liking my OC stuff better and I should probably lean into that more because it just makes me happier. That or learn how to make fanart that doesn't feel so forced and generic.

I think this >>7547679 is not necessarily unappealing, but uninteresting. There's no "personality" radiating from the character; she's just sort of sitting there and smiling vacantly. Maybe experiment with more dynamic poses? Varied facial features? Anything that has the character DOING something, preferably in a way that shows their interesting traits. Like picrel, even though it's just a girl in a white void, the way she's posed and the face she's making give an idea of what her personality's like.
Also look through your gallery and see if you can find any repeating patterns. Too many similar poses, similar compositions, lack of backgrounds etc, and try to just do something new. Often times you don't realize you're making the same mistakes over and over.

>I end up liking my OC stuff better and I should probably lean into that more because it just makes me happier.
I would also recommend that. It's anecdotal, but my OC art ends up doing way better than any of my fanarts because I end up pouring a lot more love and attention into them. At the same time though, fanart generally allows you to interact with people that like the same things you do and form connections that way. The "networking" part should feel less corporate and more like just makin' friends.

I found your profile and you practically never post. Even last month was only 4 art posts, previous month 1 post, that's not going to cut it. Biggest issue is you need to post more, only god tier artists/artists who are already famous thru something else can get away with barely posting. the reason why your art flops on mainstream social media is because it's not something that's interesting to normies on mainstream social media, draw pinups or risque drawings with lots of meat, or draw epic grimdark art, but you're in an odd place inbetween cute and epic, in which it doesn't appeal to anyone other than I guess people interested in drawing itself, and finding value on "the craft"

>>7565644
Yeah for sure. That sort of comes back to "blaming the algorithm" and networking convo, but yeah I definitely don't post enough. Partially cause all my art time this past year goes to painting, and they photograph like total shit so I never want to post WIPs or anything.

Learn how to use blend values with brushes alone and you will be fine, is actually better than layers.

Your forms are pretty flat. Study perspective and apply it to your art (i.e. using 3d forms to construct your characters, overlapping forms to impyl depth). I cannot understate how useful it is, even if you go for a more cartoony artstyle. Also never shade with just the airbrush! Hard shadows are important for showing form; hard shadows work in pretty much every scenario, while soft shadows without some hard is uncommon and hard to use (and hard shadows would work just as well anyways)

Picrel is not really a critique, I just liked her design and wanted to draw her. Though you can see how I used perspective, even if subtly, to make her form not feel flat
