20 year olds want to seem skilled and mature. And they don't realize how much extra help from other people goes into the works they idolize.
40 year olds want to seem young and full of energy. They also are aware of time passing, do not want to burn time on shit that is more efficient to do as a project, and often (not always) can convey things in less work with their decadss of experience

I think this is a surprisingly obvious thing for many exprerienced artists
The more you draw and see the drawing of others, the more you learn about technique, pure drawing craft
You undersand more and more that while enjoyable, drawing in a realistic way is just a skill among many others, that you can rank objectively. It becomes less mysterious for you.
The thing that still seems eerie is art itself, aka expression of self, aka sovl, a subjective, unrankable thing that makes you *feel*
Thus you start to seek expressive, stylized works and those are usually less versed into realism
I'm only half of 40 but in 5 years my artistic preferences have changed substantially as I learned to draw, leaning towards expressiveness at the expense lg realism

yeah, it's a matter of, are you drawing for other artists or are you drawing for normies? Normies don't give a fuck about technical execution or skill, they just care if it makes them feel good. There's this sort of disconnect that happens once technical ability passes over a certain level where normies no longer see it as something that was created, but something that just is. Like with classical music or iphones. They don't think about the composer, don't think about the technological marvels that are the TSMC factories. They don't care and never do until they witness for themselves how something is made. Then they have this revelation that the world around them is created by humans and didn't just pop out of existence. It's the reason why AI will inevitably be used by all. Most people just don't give a fuck. Never will. Just care about if it makes them feel good.

I get what you mean about work that just feels like it popped into existence, but that's just a lack of identify, it's a creative choice, it really has nothing to do with the effort or skill. No less skill goes into anime or whatever. Plenty of technically complex art still lands firmly into the auteur category, it just typically isn't realism.

Someone who is actually good at painting realizes, or should realize, that realistic art isn't actually anything special. It's just a stylistic choice like any other. It doesn't just supersede good conceptual qualities. You still have to make interesting art despite. And realism is pretty uninteresting conceptually. How good a story is has very little to do with how many big words it uses.

the longer I spend on a drawing, the worst it is. Its like every stroke sucks more soul out of it. If start over and draw a new drawing while eyeballing the polished turd, I end up making something ten times better in a fraction of the time. I call it soul tracing, because sometimes I loosely trace the turd I spent 4 hours on and the new sketch looks way better.

People are always bitching about not being seen on their socials, and here is the perfect opportunity to gain some relevance served to them on a silver platter.
