so... how do you actually get started as an animator professionally?
I have a reel, I have "experience" on various non-professional projects, and I'm in the process of getting a degree. The only thing I don't have is experience in a studio or with any of the big animation programs since I've been sticking to free shit for years.
I guess what I'm asking is what I do from here
>>7563386How are you getting a degree in animation and not touched any of the big programs?
Your school should provide you with the software to help you achieve the goal of becoming an animator.
Ask yourself these questions:
Do you want to specialize in 2D?
Yes?
Do you want to animate?
Yes?
Do you know how to use Harmony or Adobe Animate?
Yes?
Do you have a reel that is catered to said studio and is appealin' and showcases your best skill?
Yes?
Are you legible to work in state/province?
Yes?
Start applying and wishin' you the best.
If no at any point, ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ glhf

actual animation as a job is a crap chute what you wanna be is a story-boarder/animatic artist/director
that's the backbone of any animated show and usually the highest value job you can have while still actively being involved in animation production

>>7562804>sculpt mode is the single coolest hand drawn animation tool since macromedia flash, but has been totally neglected by the devs since version 1>the upgrade from gpv2 to gpv3 was premature, lots of QoL drawing tools were lost and geometry nodes support is still less-than-half baked>it is now The Year of Our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty Five A.D. and there's still no native "blob brush" or "boolean eraser" toolsi'll check in at the next LTS, but despite investing a lot of time and effort into gpencil over the last 10 years i've hardly opened blender since 4.3 released
Trying to get this motion across before adding the inbetweens. These aren't supposed to loop with the first 3 frames it just sorta ended up looking like she's standing back up. 3 moves down, 4 moves up, 5 moves forward, 6 moves backwarkd. I feel like the foreshortening on 5 and 6 could be better.
>>7563789this might read better if you time each frame instead of having them be equally spaced, as it stands i have no clue what the motion here is meant to be
>>7563439>camera language and competant directionany resources/tips to learn this? i know perspective is important for this and composition especially, started practicing those but i dunno if you have any specific suggestions
>>7563439>actual animation as a job is a crap chute what you wanna be is a story-boarder/animatic artist/directorwait, I always heard the opposite, that animation, esp japanese animation, is the industry that is suffering a lack of trained workers, and that storyboarding is what is over-saturated...
pls give me hope, animation GOD sama, because I really wanna do storyboarding too, I always just thought it was possible. Please help give me a realistic view on storyboarding as a job

>>7563899lmao nice

>>7563794Watch lots n lots of lots animated media be they ads/movies/shows
having a vast mental library will improve your creativity
An excercise i was taught was to pick a good scene and reverse engineer an animatic from it
re-translating it from a finished render to an animatic and making it communicable to a fellow artist will make you conscious of what the general trappings of planning such a shot would be
Another tip I can share is that everyone uses the same slang/vocabulary for everything
Depending on the team, terms like "key frame", "camera zoom", "pan", can have different applied meanings, misunderstandings are common and frequent
Learn to anticipate and work through these differences and ensure your animatic is interpreted correctly
As you start getting into the workplace you'll realize 99% of the problems root from bad communication/misunderstandings
Having a hotshot sakuga nerd solo animator is cool n all, but an artist that can read between the line and tailor his work to the often retarded client's specific demands? now that's worth his weight in gold
>>7563805>animation, esp japanese animation, is the industry that is suffering a lack of trained workers, and that storyboarding is what is over-saturatedJapanese studios are a bit of a exception since their industry is very streamlined for adapting manga that comes pre-packaged with great pacing/writing/composition
Hence they don't require little creative leg work on the artist's part to produce the animatic/story-board (Its probably still good work mind you but it adaption not an original creation)
Adapting a manga < Translating a vague script with multiple rounds of corrections/modification
Depends on which country you're in desu but from what i've seen the humble story-board is an essential step in every form of media even live-action ads/films need a storyboard for planning purposes and see big name story-board directors hired for lucrative commissions/salaries
Versatility>Specialization
>>7564101>Another tip I can share is that everyone uses the same slang/vocabulary for everything*not everyone

>>7563791>I have no clue what the motion here isAlright, thats bad. The intention is for it to be a sex motion loop transitioning into slightly different sex motion positions. But I might just scrap that idea if I dont like it.
This one is a 4 frame loop doing a sort of pushup motion. I haven't really decided how many frames I want or the timing of it. Looking at it now, the hair physics is out of synch with the boob jiggles. I have to fix one of the frame's hair so it moves correctly. I also want the tongue to twirl with a drool strand following the tongue. Two of the frames has the tongue following the drool. Overall, I guess she's kinda like a eager dog. I kinda like it.

so really i can't give you much advice on the global market's state
but the global stage can't be worse than this third world pit
and if i can thrive here you shouldn't have much trouble surviving in your country's industry
best advice i got is stay strong and keep improving
make contacts wherever you can and have a reputation and a solid portfolio
you'll figure it out buddy just give it your all

your english is extremely good, have you tried getting a storyboarding job in the US or Canada? In north america, there are like 500 people who apply for 1 job, so it makes me feel like I don't have a chance at all, esp wtihout work experience or connections. How did you break in and get your first job? Were you just overwhelmingly good?
Also, how many drawing passes do you do in your animation? Do you draw everything in one go, like KJG?
>>7565480jesus christ multi layer color/highlight is such a nightmare
nex time i'll look into using a third party software like after effects
fun excercise tho
>>7565635>your english is extremelythank you saaar
it's technically my second language
but honestly i'm more proficient with english than my mother tongue
>How did you break in and get your first job? Were you just overwhelmingly good?i go my first job as freelance artist from my college prof's contact while still in college
after that my college contacts led me to the place im currently interning at
suprisingly credentials mean very little here they care more about what's in the portfolio
they had work and i was better than my peer applicants (i wa shown their work later) so i got picked
personally i'd rate myself as slightly below average at best by global standards which translates to pretty good here
I've been blessed with a phenomenal mentor who qualifies as one of the "greats" in the Indian animation industry so fortune's been on my side so far
>have you tried getting a storyboarding job in the US or Canada?not really since i believe i'm unqualified still maybe in~6 ~7 years into my career i'll give it a go
besides i'm rather satisfied with work and life here
never really got the hype some of my people have towards moving abroad
>there are like 500 people who apply for 1 job, this seems like an inflated figure
but even if it were accurate i reckon you could easily excel above ~80% of these by being just baseline competant/good communicator
if my experience with art college has taught me anyting
its that almost 90% of art students are failsons belonging to rich household
who're in it for "le art college experience" rather than any genuine interest or passion for animation
don't put yourself down by comparing yourself to the lowly masses
if you have genuine interest in animation and practice daily you've already got a massive headstart on a good chunk of your peers

Anyone know if the linked sfx course(https://bitey.com/pages/fx) is good? I wanted to get the vfxapprentice course but couldn't find it on any torrent site
>>7564101thank you! i don't post much here but i always sincerely appreciate your explanations
Is after effects the only option to create animations using a mesh? I tried Live2D but the fact that you need to use parameters to animate using the timeline feels counter intuitive. What if I want the hand to go beyond the limits of that parameter? Other solution would be Spine2D but $300 bucks...
I'm posting this WIP because I don't see myself working on it anytime soon

I was focused on the jiggles but the leg movement seems off.
So what's the best way to make an actual short animation? I've made somewhere between 30s-1 min of practice animations this month, but I have a story that I want to animate, and I think it could be a nice challenge.
Right now I'm in the planning phase. I think I will make a short written script and I am also figuring out the exact tone and style that I want to hit (i.e. if I want it slightly playful or more serious).
I am guessing the next step would be to make a storyboard and an animatic. This would help me see how much work I have in front of me, and whether I need to make any changes if I want to finish the project by the end of Q3 (there will be an indie festival in my area).
Then if it looks good I "just animate" and make the backgrounds, doing roughs first, and then cleaning up + coloring (if I decide to do colors, black and white would also fit my theme). I've only done messier rough stuff so far, so if I want to make it nicer this step will probably take quite a while.
Audio is another important part, I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt to already have dialogue recorded fairly decently by the animatic stage.
I am thinking of starting off solo, and then I will ask around among my artist friends to see if someone might be willing to collaborate. I can already see that with animation it's much easier to get a nice end product if you have a team instead of going solo.
Any one of you ever did a bigger project like this? Do you have any advice?

cute motion blur o the arm
but might as well commit to a single smear frame
consider adding anticipation to the arm before the smear frame to telgraph that action it starts off too abruptly

and last best advice i got is not every frame has to be a complete redraw its fine to let the base torso drawing stay the same with very slight morphing
>>7589424i know but is there a way to do that on pc that you know of?
i really like your artstyle n wanna replicate that vibe
idk how minus8 did it in his time i can't get symbols to properly track with the parent symbol or stuff like adding offset to the child symbol (for secondary action) after tweening the parent without the symbol going haywire
its prolly just a skill issue but its really getting on my nerves the only viable option seems to be making a symbol inside the child symbol and animating/offsetting that but then it becomes entirely too unwieldly and counter-intuitives
especially since there isn't dedicated timeline for individual aspects like xy cooridinates/scaling/rotation i was relying on the parenting to atleast work reliably
I'm gonna spend a weekend tryna troubleshoot
but i'd be lovely if i could find a easier to use software specialized for tweening predrawn assets or some such

i can still do it the other way round but if i tween the keys and try to offset them i think the anchor doesnt know where to pin the child to the parent
it works like a 50/50 chance idk
might take a lot more planning every loop before i make it a thing

>>7590743>>7590766I really hope I can sort of explain and help you here, but I also do really dislike Flash/Animate.
From what I remember with Flash/Animate, what I try to do is animate the whole motion and then change the timing values; I swear there *should* be a way to change the timing of a symbol along with nesting that should let you do it in a manner similar to how I do here in TS (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/T2RnLJ3MRXw).
>still don't get how minus8 does the boob outlines from some of the bouncie gifs>it looks ttoo perfect to be manualFunny you mention that, as I did see how he did it on stream years back, and it was a crazy interesting method: when he does the boob outline movement, like when bouncing up and down, to nicely thicken and thin out, is that he's layering 2 ovals: you have the skin colored oval on top, and then a black oval behind it, to simulate the line art. He then offsets the movement of the black oval behind positionally (and I think as well with timing offset) so that it gives the appearance of black linework. I hope I'm explaining it in a way that makes sense here.
Also I really do wish there was a Flash/Animate-esque program that would let you do raster AND symbols (I know you can do the assets in another program and import, but it makes fixing errors more annoying since you have two layers of programs to work with). I hear Toon Boom is an often recommended one for tweening, but it's also super unintuitive for the Flash-minded user because it has different ways of setting up (from what I last remember struggling badly in TB). It does allow for raster in it, last I checked though, but you're sorta on your own there. ToonSquid is fucking baller because it's so intuitive as a former Flash guy, so it was extremely easy to get the hang of with that experience.

I know he did SFW stuff on his Twitch so you might see some VODs...but I have no idea if it still exists or if her purged, so yeah, hard to track that stuff down other than through my memories.
>just you wait minus8 i am gonna learn your techniqueFunny you say that: I used to watch his streams almost religiously during '18-'19, and that was during my beginnings as a lewd artist. He's the reason why I started this, and I always wished I could animate like him. It's why I take it as a compliment when my first TS tweening animations were compared to him, as that's what I'm going for.
I believe in you kotto-anon, might take some time but you'll get there! One thing I have to keep telling myself too is that it's okay if they don't look amazing--we're just learning here. I looked through minus8's old work and I can definitely see the cracks and mistakes, but it's a sobering reminder to just let go of trying to look amazing when we just need to produce and learn.

What software is used create this animation? I'm more interested in the live mouse recording. I read that AE has the mouse sketch feature but I don't think this is that. I tried asking the person who made this but they purposely ignored me.

water balloon drop, essentially a ball bounce with a more squishy and wobbly feel, again just another added bit of stuff to think about as a step up from doing only ballz
basic character head turn maybe?
>>7596100> walk before you run...too many unique frames...optimize and min max your animation efficiency...Utilize every tool in your belt...I will continue to trip and fall down the stairs until I reach some sort of destination. I may end up going backwards and wasting a lot of time but in the end it all adds up to many repeated failures to learn from. Right now I'm very time inefficient. I spend too much time drawing extra frames and having to throw out much of that work because it doesnt feel right.
To be more efficient. I've tried to use ai to do inbetween frames for me but unfortunately, I couldn't get tooncrafter to run on my machine. I wanted to treat AI like my own personal inbetweener while I focused on the more important drawings but I cant get the thing to work.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E89R5_hQ5bQ
If anyone has luck with it, its open source. Description of it in linked youtube vid.
>use the following links...I've watched some of these before. On and off. Although things dont really stick. As I was working on this project, I rewatched some vids and I was trying to apply what I remembered. When Richard was mentioning something about arcs and figure eight motions, I unconsciously animated my tits growth scene in that pattern. Also, when Alan was talking about using straight ahead animation for drapery effects and pose to pose for the actual character, I tried to implement it. I'm thinking about how to quickly complete My next project. This one 6 sec scene is taking too dam long.
>>7597076>study is nessesary...Eventually it gets fun...Balance studies with non studies.I could treat the studies as a 15 min warmup exercise, playing around with balls, boxes and lines. Hell, I should use reference motions and copy them to get the gestures and line of action in a animated motion. I'd like to copy some complicated fight scene and just turn the characters into touhou characters for the funs. I haven't really gotten around to these study ideas.
>>7605819those are mostly covered in the animator's survival kit

Sucks that CSP Pro only lets you use 24 frames. I think I want to animate more once I can properly draw.
This thing is done. I need to learn how to cut the time spent down. I keep adding things in later that could of been added at the start, effectively ,multiplying time spent.
>>7606934>no magical cure-all to it just good ol elbow grease and hard workyes...Slamming my head into a brick wall until it breaks. Thats how I like to play my souls borne games.
