/ALT/ - Alternative Art/Stylization General
Previous thread: >>7526054

What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly, keep discussion at a civil level.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

I feel like I remember you posting more a few years back and I could tell the art was good but the way you drew it was so almost unreadable that everything looked like a crazy stained glass window. You had to look at it for a minute before the actual image would rise out of the lines.

Hey, same anon from before. Looks like you started using some hard shading, but that airbrush still looks god awful. Honestly I should've told you to not use it at all since it's not as straightforward to use as it seems. It looks more like you're using it without knowing exactly why other than the fact that light is shining down on her face/boobs/shoulders/wherever. Whereas light from above doesn't really look like that. It's hard to explain since good lighting requires good forms, which this doesn't have, and which I want to talk about next.

The forms are still very flat! Though I expected as much, you can't get perfect forms overnight. Left side of the crit is what your forms look like right now. Imagine them as pieces of paper placed down on a table. They don't cast any shadows and don't convey any sort of depth. Right is an example of good (ish) forms. They look 3-dimensional and convey proper depth, where they are in relation to the other parts of the body and which direction they face or extend. The fact that they have clear tops and bottoms make them VERY important for placing cast shadows (the shadows cast by an object) and form shadows (the shadows ON an object).

If you haven't already, check out Perspective Made Easy for a good understanding of perspective and drawing the 3rd dimension. I still cannot understate just how important understanding good forms can improve many other aspects of drawing. It's something you gotta practice for a while, but once you get the hang of it everything just clicks. Also check out these videos for lighting tips, they explain lighting way better than I ever could:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3WmrWUEIJo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcCJ2CU-bFw (this one's more for painting, but it's still useful for picking the right values and where shadows appear)

keep drawing, my tip for figures is to learn anatomy first, gives better understandings to perspective and gesture. It's weird way of learning, and it takes time to do, but once you have some knowledge the other fundamentals become easier

Yes that usually helps for me when things aren't coming out how I want. Then do a finished piece applying the boring practice.
>im also afraid of forming bad habits.
If you don't practice, you won't get the skill gain from said practice. The upside outweighs the potential downsides. Usually bad habits are from lack of practice not from practicing wrong.

i think when you can't make art you like you should definitely just hunker down and practice. then when you'll get bored of practice you'll think of all the things you ACTUALLY want to draw, and start drawing those. most of the time you'll find that you end up applying some of that practice in these art pieces, consciously or not

make a pinterest board of anatomical drawings instead of real life refs and just copy that, look up specific examples of torso drawings, leg drawings. Make sure to get a lot of them so you can apply them to your drawings with specific poses. Once you get used to it you won't need to check your board as much. Ofc you need to know fundamentals like gesture and perspective but they can be broken down very easily, gesture is just gravity travelling through a body while perspective is how something lines up towards a vanishing point

also another thing is to learn bridgman, don't copy the book because that takes too long and its boring. Bridgman to me can be broken down into the shapes of the body like the ribcage and pelvis, overlapping lines coming from the top which can be used for foreshortening and internal line work to add depth (really important)

You're absolutely right β€” the knee positioning does look off, and I can see how it makes the pose feel unnatural. I'll definitely try acting it out myself to get a better sense of the weight and balance, even if poses like this can be a bit embarrassing! As for the head, I was aiming for a style with slightly bigger heads, but maybe it just ends up looking weird here.

You totally captured what I was going for, but with a much more natural and relaxed pose. I can really see how the changes to the hips and feet make a big difference. And yeah, the hands were actually meant to give exactly the kind of vibe you nailed with yours, so great job on that! No worries at all about critiquing me, even harshly if you want β€” I really appreciate the feedback.

in any case today I tried drawing something a bit more goonerbait, but it really didn’t turn out well. It just doesn’t give off that sexy vibe I was aiming for, and honestly… I’m really bad with colors. Back to the grind, I guess even if is midnight.

No I just kept looking at it for reference, I didn't study it page by page or copy over and over. For me the first 1/3rd of the book was worthless and it felt like the artist was just proving he can actually draw before giving advice. But the stuff after was solid and i was always looking back at it when I got stuck on anatomy and proportions. If the book is to entry level for you then I cant actually give any advice after that. The way I learned AFTER the book was a million little things from a million different sources.

I'm not that popular or experienced β€” honestly, I think you probably draw better than me. But if I had to guess what to do, I'd say something like this:

Post consistently, even if it’s just a 2-3 times a week. Share your process β€” sketches, inks, final colors β€” people like seeing the behind-the-scenes.

Focus on a couple platforms, and use hashtags or communities to get more eyes on your work.

Batch your work if possible, like sketching multiple pages on one day and inking them later. It saves time switching between tasks.

Reuse layouts or assets when you can, and use tools or shortcuts to speed things up.

Maybe even set up a simple site or comic profile on places like Tapas or Webtoon, just to have a hub for your stuff.

That’s just my take β€” and im sayng pretty obvius stuff.

Like i said the art is realy good, but the page layout is confusing at first glance β€” it's not clear where to start reading. Maybe a small arrow at the top edge could help guide the flow.

I get the joke, but in the deer panel I’d push it further: like the caveman stressing out, imagining his wife wants a T-Rex for dinner. then she suddenly asks for a pizza. And to top it off, he’s on the phone ordering from Cavedash, the caveman version of DoorDash. or something like that.

sorry if i sound pompous
