The thing about Morpho is that it's not anatomically accurate on purpose, it's built for drawing, not realism. It’s more of an interpretation tool than a reference manual. Use it alongside real refs.

If you want an actual reference go for Anatomy for Sculptors.

one of the best questions I've seen in these threads. What I do with this type of question is to first go to how it was done in the early days, and go from there, this is the power of youtube and hobbyists you can find this stuff quite easily.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIoUTrSWvEE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TitHhF0e79I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbwmXKwkgaw

and start taking notes, for example now I know what is really importarnt is a map good enough with landmarks (rivers, seas, mountains, etc) to get by (anaximander). Then the concept of latitude and longitude helps with the scaling and instead of drawing the whole world you focus in an area (like the Mediterranean.

you can version your work and add stuff or remove as you go, some islands become peninsulas, new islands, rivers are added, etc

add lore and merchant routes to make it more humane.

example of what I would do.

in what universe will drawing hundreds of boxes in perspective help you to draw anime girls? drawabox is a beg trap for people that are too low iq to set goals or practice exercises for themselves and need the game-ified dopamine hit of progressing through some rigid course - even if that "progress" is not aligned with their actual ambition

seriously though, how are you drawing characters with so much soul? i cannot draw appealing faces or accurate faces no matter how hard i try or how many exercises i come up with for myself
did you always draw characters that felt so "real"? did you develop the ability after years of doodling without any pressure? to say i am envious would be an understatement, i feel myself losing faith in my own skill and/or ability to learn because it has been so long without me stumbling upon the "secret" to soulful characters

i am beginning to question whether my conviction that everything in art can be learned and practiced actually has one exception: drawing believable expressive faces... =(

hmmm, so the key to expressiveness is intuition. Whenever I get too mechanical about what I draw, I lose a lot of my expressiveness, as an example in my studies, I almost never can get the same level of expression. A lot of it is learning to trust your intuition and not necessarily trusting accuracy, even if you have to fight yourself. Art is a 2d medium - in order to get expressiveness, you have to exaggerate because you can't actually see the moving masses of the face that are associated with an expression in real life, it's very difficult to accurately get that in real time without looking uncanny which is a big reason why even an extremely talented person who does a realistic study of someone who is smiling will often come off as extremely uncanny valley, because our brains can't process seeing that crushed into two dimensions, the way it can process 3D expression. A lot of it is going with your gut and utilizing exaggeration and stylization. I'm not very technically skilled so it's difficult for me to express, but one of the worst things that I think that someone can do to get trapped in unexpressive art is to basically only use the Loomis face - I would rather have an asymmetrical face that is lacking some degree of construction that is expressive and conveys an emotion than have something with extreme rigidity that doesn't express anything. I definitely need to learn Loomis, but I would never let myself be dependent on it because I see what it does to people and what it creates if people become too dependent on underlying construction and not about the feel or forms of the mass. Another thing is letting yourself go off model with characters when necessary the same way they do it animation, although often criticized, I think it's a very essential part of expressiveness in a well-done animated piece and is very much lost in a lot of modern animation, both in Japan and the West.
Thank you, by the way. I could say more but don't want to bore you

Also, the thing with heavily expressive art is you're better off studying western fine artists than eastern artists which is a lot less straight forward. Western artists pre 1960 to me have a lot more appeal than both modern Western and Eastern artists because of how expressive they are. even an artist who wasn't particularly expressive in his subject matter, like Alphonse mucha, was capable of conveying so much expression in a simple face. It's a skill that's being lost

lmao that is not boring, that is very insightful! thank you!

i started out on a path of learning art with the goal to draw clean and detailed stuff because it appears that is what brings in commissions - but trying to be accurate and consistent and having good anatomy etc has kneecapped my art. everything you said rings very true.

part of me is already trying to find a way to optimize in a new way to guarantee expressiveness... lmao
when reading your post i already started to think
"okay, i need to trust intuition, but my intuition is underdeveloped, how can i "train" it? how can i train it to keep expressiveness while also making drawings that look high value in order to get commissions? how should i ..." and it goes on

since i am not getting commissioned anyways, maybe i should abandon that ambition entirely and only draw once in a blue moon whenever i feel like it... fuck i made myself sad

still, thank you very much <3 i will be thinking about your post for a while!

I understand, having recently taken up commission work there's definitely a degree of polish that I'm finding which kneecaps a bit of soul. I think it's just finding an equal balance. A lot of way I got this way is because I actually used to be an Imsorryjon/internet meme horror person when I didn't have any fundamentals which is very much leaning into heavy expressionism because it's point is to be disturbing. I've always been very into that and over time I've been able to learn to convert that into something that has a bit more appeal rather than just being for the mentally disturbing and uncanny. I think a lot of it isn't just developing your skills but also developing your eye and learning what to look for. Consuming more art that is soulful, and branching out in the sort of art that you consume and make a part of your life definitely helps. As I said above, I think that looking into more Western expressionistic art definitely helps because you internalize components of that "soul." Modern art is very clean, very often lacking in soul and somewhat corporatized even when it's just individual commissioners. Fine art has a lot more of what you're looking for if you're looking for inspiration in that regard. Don't get me wrong, I love anime art styles, but it's just never who I've ever artistically looked up to, I've always looked up to Western fine artists and when I decided to pick up fundamentals I wanted to learn how to blend that interest in Western fine art and classical art with my character art. It sounds very pretentious, but if I had a goal it would be to be able to create things that resemble pre 1950 western fine art/ink work/expressionist and surrealist styles but of my characters and of my internal universe rather than anything else.

Looks good for the most part but the nose and jaw/chin are drawn like they're being viewed from a much lower angle than the rest of the face. The underside of the nose is too tall and not wide enough, and the jaw meets the neck too cleanly. Also the hair on the left flaring out so much looks weird, it should just fall straight down.
Anonymous No.7611462 >>7611503
A lot of why I use this messy graphite or ink sketch style is because it "resembles" old sketchbooks by the western masters from before Bridgman and before the standardization of art, similar to gritty ink work. Even if it's just porn, I want it to have that feeling that if you weren't looking at the subject, it was drawn by someone from before artistic teaching standardization. I don't know if I'll ever get there, but maybe in a decade I will.

you are definitely achieving *something* with your art direction lol
kind of ironically, what your art reminds me of is specifically japanese artists (individuals rather than studios) who draw scribble doodles of anime girls that just stare into nothingness but manage to convey a sense of connection with the viewer that should not be possible from just pixels on a screen... and so few pixels at that!

that goat above is a prime example

even if i manage to finally decide that i want to abandon cleanliness for expressiveness... i have no idea how to practice it
i wish i could force myself to worry less :^)
this is the type of fundamental illness within me that i cant over come lmao
talking to you about this, i got the idea to at least gather the sketches of mine that accidentally, fortunately, had some expressiveness and try to remember what state of mind i was in when drawing. maybe i can find out what it is that switches on or off that allows for these lucky accidents
this is the latest sketch that happened to be such a lucky accident for me. it is almost half a year old ;_;

aside from my pages of exercises (which look deceptively good) these are a good representation of what it looks like when i (attempt) to draw an actual pic for real
one is how my sketch looks right before i start doing lines, the other is an attempt to - at least - go through the motions of finishing a drawing completely

you are very kind... thank you. i know my stuff is not that bad - but when looked at as more than the sum of its parts it is lacking appeal. these two pics took me multiple hours combined, while that sketch above >>7611503

it is undeniable that i have no (or even reverse) control over how my effort translates to "looking nice" lmao

oh i see, yeah that is a bold design to tackle. without very careful attention to lighting and making her silhouette asymmetrical with a special pose - no wonder it turned out a bit bland

on the other hand, the head and face now seem even better in your drawing

you should put more effort into making interesting poses and save some of your effort and time on the coloring front - i think you would benefit from that. i know doing interesting poses from imagination is a minefield of falling back on "safe" (and therefore boring) poses...

I do it like that sometimes if they are not at a straight angle, if it helps u place them better do it. In the traditional loomis method the middle of the sphere is usually where the brow is, and on this anime head it's the same, and the lower part is where the eyes are usually in anime at least.

Just keep grinding these heads and with time u find the best way for you to do it.

keep grinding anon! its pretty flawed still, but some parts - viewed in isolation, on their own - are okay! proportions overall are wonky but individual body pars are hinting that you understanding of anatomy is on the right track
consider doing "classical" figure drawing exercises, i think the digital tools at your disposal and the expectations to do clean lines and coloring might be taking away from your brain power and sabotaging the more fundamental parts of figure drawing. by "classical" i mean drawing more loosely, not using color (yet, at least if it is supposed to be a practice drawing) and doing multiple figure sketches in a short time, mixing drawing from reference and from imagination

im tired boss, i am swamped in bullshit =(
ill try to restrain myself and not write another essay...
construction can be very subjective, individual, intuitive (my preference) or very rigid, formulaic, borderline autistic (i discourage this, so my advice is biased)
also, construction depends on what you are drawing... the closest thing to a generalization i can think of is that mantra i mentioned "what is the largest, simplest, most important, thing i have not drawn yet? draw that! repeat..."
when you see other artists describing their approach to constructing complex subjects, do not fall into the trap of copying them exactly forever. these instructions should serve you to understand what some art teacher is thinking while drawing... you will ideally, hopefully, come up with your own shortcuts and markings and (literal) guide lines that feel natural for you. this takes practice and experience and time, and is never completed [cont]
Anonymous No.7612924 >>7613305 >>7613316
>>7612515
>>7612532
>>7612918
[cont]
you will develop and refine your personal way of constructing subjects as long as you draw

as for how to even start... depends on what you want to draw. if you draw vehicles and buildings, then starting with some perspective lines and enclosing box shapes. if you draw figures, you could draw a stick figure, add blobs for muscles (/muscle groups / whole body parts) and mark important, unchanging, spots of the body...

if you draw a lot, you will naturally, through laziness and pattern recognition, begin to group features together and make shortcuts to indicate them, stripping away details to be drawn at a later stage. these shortcuts and marks and guide lines will grow to contain a lot of information imbued in them by you and your own way of understanding the 3d form of your subject. you will draw these shortcuts earlier and earlier in the drawing stage, because they are so helpful in placing subsequent brush strokes. this personal collection of shortcuts will become your way of constructing a subject.

what is it that you want to draw, and be able to construct in order to draw from imagination? humans?

the truth is I don’t really know what I want to draw right now, I haven’t started drawing of a desire of β€œI want to draw boats” or β€œI want to design cereal boxes” or β€œI want to draw cute anime girls with enormous futa cocks”, I want to learn to do so as an outlet to exercise the creative muscles of my brain, and I realise that having that as my sole motivation instead of channelling my learning into an existing desire to create something probably doesn’t bode well for the chances of me sticking with it long term
so, more shortly, I think I’m more interested in the process of learning rather than pursuing any particular outcome, and in that process of learning I guess I’ll try drawing boats AND cereal boxes AND cute anime girls with enormous futa cocks to see if any of it sticks on a level beyond a desire to improove or for the sake of proving to myself that I can
I’m a pretty uncreative person so going from drawing what I see, to drawing abstract composite shapes of what I see to drawing things purely from my brain all seem like monumental steps that I’m hesitant to take, but I’ll consider your posts carefully once I acquire the balls to do so

I will keep it as simple as possible if you just want to have fun.

1.paint a big shape that looks what you want
2. draw a rough outline, don't draw individual strands they are noise, big strands and gaps
3. use a darker color and lighter color to refine the strands.
4. use references, if you want trace, overlay, photobash, with time you are going to be doing this stuff by intuition.

boorus are a great resource to find specific stuff.

good luck have fun, always work from big/general to small/detail.
