Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.>Donโt copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when youโre told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each otherโs processes and knowledge.**

>>7612469you need to mind the connection points as those are what dictate the 3d feel. and you aren't exactly studying a moneyshot so even your ref has lazy forms so you want to do some thinking on your own how forms wrap around etc. also don't do the lazy hatching, i'd just use the lasso tool, takes very little time and doesn't have to be perfect
Would like to step in and drop some advice. If you want to learn how to draw anime style you need to realize that each series/franchise has a different canon for constructing their characters faces. You will typically have 3-4 variants all build from 1 foundation for smaller productions to accommodate male and female characters of various types. from there it's just different hairstyles, eyes, color schemes and minor details. For example, every single character from Naruto is constructed the same way, with the same canon. Which will be different from another popular series like Bleach or Soul eater.
I'm saying this because I want to highlight the fact that mindlessly drawing characters may be fun but you will not retain anything useful from that practice. What you should be doing is creating a template or a model from which you will use as direct reference. It's important that this model is made in 2D and not 3D because anime style, like cartoons, will deform the features in certain ways to aid in expressiveness. If you tried to model a 3D face based on a character, you'd quickly realize that it will be impossible to achieve the range of expressiveness that 2D allows. That being said, making a 3D model is often practiced in various productions as a means to get a general sense of proportions from various angles after which an artist will then draw freehand.
Beginner artists have this mentality that everything must come directly from the mind. That is far from the truth. You should be using, collecting and especially 'creating' specific 2D references, templates and models for your particular needs.
>>7612755>If you tried to model a 3D face based on a character, you'd quickly realize that it will be impossible to achieve the range of expressiveness that 2D allows. This applies even for non-faces. My friend used to hate how the mecha designs in Zeta Gundam looked, but that was because he experienced it through a videogame where the animations of the 3D models are extremely limited. The actual show has the movements work a lot better.
Does anyone have a figure ref of a typical bare bones anime girl standing straight and facing the camera, in different angles? It sounds simple and I've seen a couple but I have no idea how to search for it or find it in these anime guide twitters.

as a side note I don't really get /ic/'s pathological disdain for noses when there are thousands of examples from mangas and animes where they depict it to refer to. I don't subscribe to that belief nor do I think western influence is inherently a bad thing, as a matter of fact there are several animes I can think of right off the top of my head that have distinct western influences like
Kureyon Shin-chan, doraemon, and possibly my all time favorite anime The laughing salesman. the Japanese themselves do not afraid of western influence themselves and happily and readily use western resources and techniques in their art constantly. I can completely understand where people would think I'm coping and that's fine I'm more or less just throwing in my 2 cents on the topic out there. I have a different perspective because I hail from /mlp/ and the culture surrounding art there is completely and totally different from /ic/'s culture, and I'm personally of the opinion that expanding ones horizons and taking notes and influences from different cultures and styles is not an inherently bad thing.

If you need a physical example, think of nendoroid/anime figure hair parts and how they divide the bangs, sides and the back. Always start with the hair root point on the head, spread out from there. Plot it out with big shapes first underneath then you can break it down further. If you go to the artbook general they should have some anime books about hair.

I've been copying an anime artist every day for at least an hour for 3 months now, complemented with trying to draw characters in the same style from imagination, and I feel like I haven't made any progress since, I still can't summon the right proportions, shapes, features to mind when I look at a blank canvas, and when I make an ugly sketch I don't know where to start fixing it to make it look more accurate to the style
Should I try another approach or just keep at it? Someone suggested memorizing the drawings and trying to redraw them from memory a day later, but that feels counterproductive to me, the artist can draw a variety of characters or invent completely news ones, and have them look accurate regardless of perspective, facial expression etc and memorization feels like the wrong way to get to the goal of also being to invent
Keep in mind I have years of drawing experience already, I'm not a /beg/, I'm just trying to learn an anime-like style, so the lack of progress feels more concerning to me given that I feel like I should have some mastery already, learning everything so far felt a lot more straightforward and obvious

md5: 753092fcf737a0e8013ede0b55387d3a
๐
>>7644672If I were to apply my knowledge to today's sketch by liquifying it, it'd look like this, which I guess is better but not something I can observe while drawing which I don't like, ideally I'd want to be able to freehand it and see it in my mind before drawing
>>7644672>an hour for 3 months>I feel like I should have some mastery alreadyThat's only ~90+ hours. It's not enough to see significant progress in something as hard as legitimate anime so I wouldn't be discouraged about the method. Post the artist and full detail copies you did.
>have them look accurate regardless of perspective, facial expression etc Because they memorized every key angle and expression already. They have made the basic/most common things into muscle memory.
>>7644694>That's only ~90+ hours. It's not enough to see significant progress in something as hard as legitimate animeI guess but I wasn't expecting to see strides, literally any progress or the feeling it got a bit easier would've been fine, but it still feels exactly like day 1
>Because they memorized every key angle and expression alreadyI don't think that's possible, almost every single one of the artist's drawings has something new going on, whether it's a completely different character, a new pose, a new expression, a new hairstyle, a new anime-style mouth or eye, an interesting shape or pattern, an original way of drawing a common feature etc, yet they all feel like the same consistent style
>>7644706If you're not doing full blown copies (e.g. a full color illustration in an unfamiliar style can easily take 10-20+ hours) & full original pieces in the style you won't see much progress. The higher your raise your standard (ideally to match the artist you're copying) the more progress you'll see.
That doesn't mean the basics / universal things aren't muscle memory that they've drawn hundreds of times in the same style.

>>7647259for the top right drawing how do you do the lines for the chin and side of the face, do you do it as solid lines in one go or as smaller sketchier lines until you get the approximate shape and angle?
>>7648677When I do a light undersketch I hold my pencil all the way at the back and very loosely. I don't follow the reference 1:1 as I think that makes the outcome too stiff so I try to be as loose and gestural with my lines as I can. I'll roughly sketch out the forms that I see and make adjustments to the shape/angle as I go while keeping the lines very light. In the case of the top right one, I erased the undersketch lightly and tried to make dark but still loose lines while following the undersketch as a guide (I don't trace the undersketch since it makes the outcome stiffer). I grip my pencil firmer for this too. If you can get it in one smooth line that's the ideal imho, but I feel that I wasn't confident enough to do that so my lines for the chin are kind of weak and scratchy.

One tricky thing about studying the anime head is the hair makes it difficult to assess where the skull lies. The 3/4 angle especially trips me up. How would you break this down, /asg/?
>>7657191>hair makes it difficult>skullconstructoids have poisoned your mind anon. there is no skull on 2d illustrated anime girls. try to study the real thing before your eyes instead of a simplified 3d cope. do a similar 2d traceover on the hair as well, hair is an integral part of a character.

>>7657235> ball-and-shield-shapehide channel is going to be the best for that but it's more animator focused (usually more literal perspective compared to fire emblem and other illustrator styles). still do the 2D trace over the hair though because the ball stuff can be misleading in breaking down existing 2D illustrations, it's more useful as a guide when creating and there is no one way to do it (contrary to what /ic/ constructoids who redline pro animators' art will have you believe)

>>7657277I'm not going to crab you, I just want to see your work before I take your advice
I wanna learn how to draw Neuro-sama. First time drawing anime style. The red ones were traced.
How to implement fundies and proper construction when making the anime head?
I feel like it is too stylized to make proper sense unlike real heads.
Anyone have a course or something? Anything I find from guys like tealbro is "lol just feel it bruh" and "memorize 200 angles"
pic is from some very talented guy from this board.
>>7658790Consider that "fundies and "proper" construction" are a psyop.
>too stylized to make proper senseAnd yet it looks good. Really makes you think... Maybe it also makes proper sense but you just can't see it.

>>7611054 (OP)as posted to the manga making general, I'll most likely be going to Japan later this year.
Any books I should pick up or be looking for?
(beginner here-not that it fully matters)
>>7657191My advice is that you search online for rough key animation drawings (i.e., genga ๅ็ป) and production sketches in general, the rougher and sketchier the better. The Mandarake website is a good place to start.
The reason why (in this particular case) I recommend genga instead of settei is that the latter, while very helpful, nonetheless are usually quite cleaned up already, so it can be hard to decipher the underlying construction process of the character designs just by looking at them.
Judging by what I have seen so far, many (if not most) anime artists, especially those working in moeblob-type shows, tend to approach head construction in a rather intuitive and streamlined way: barring things such as tufts, locks, ponytails, and accessories, the cranium shape often encompasses most of the hair silhouette. So, for all intents and purposes, these artists seem to treat the cranium and the hair as a combo, instead of as fully separate entities.
That said, on occasion you can find sketches that display more modular types of head construction (some of them even resembling the Loomis method), although, with some exceptions, they appear to become more frequent the more you depart from the moeblob aesthetic.

>>7612296I recognize this style...
Anyways the horse girls got me good so I sketched some stuff. I don't usually draw anime but it's a fun toss up from my usual shit. But damn if those faces and eyes aren't hard to get right with only lines.
>>7663314>>I recognize this style...For real? who am I then? just reply with the first three letters of my artist tags and I will be happy. my caveat being I would like your first three letters of your name in response. will ask for more if I need it.
>>7664940>scaAs for mine itโs lil, maybe the horse theme will tip ya off lmao.
>>7663260Thank you, this is exactly what I need

I'm doing it! I'm de-westoidifying!!! Pic is original except for the hair which is referenced because I haven't gotten to hair yet
