render master...
I kneel and beg of you:
tell us how you learned to render so well? Which video or book helped you the most? How much time do you spend on this?
Anonymous No.7614407
Anonymous No.7614413 >>7614450
>>7614404
It's really not as hard as it looks, most of it is just getting the values right. This took like 15 minutes to render.

Pay attention to what makes certain materials what they are. Metal will turn reflective around sliding surfaces and is very smooth, plastic will develop a fine white powder on the surface as it wears, and almost always has some light warping and dents, even on solid objects. Practically *everything* is shiny, it's just very diffusely reflective. And everything is covered in fingerprints.

Honestly, don't bother with painting resources for this kind of thing. I mostly picked it up from doing Blender stuff. Blender Guru's PBR tutorial is good, but it's ancient at this point, and there's probably better stuff around for Substance Painter.
Anonymous No.7614432 >>7614805
Anonymous No.7614450
>>7614413
I wouldn't even know how to translate the knowledge of materials to the tools provided in 2D programs. It's more intuitive in 3D with the material sliders etc. Roughness, translucent, .... No such thing in Krita.Even though I know how plastic looks like, best I can do is approximate it with flat colors.
I now realize I lack color talent. Can't have it all!

I definitely see the shapes/values over lines thing more in the wild so it seems like the way to go I just wonder if there's a midpoint that can look alright
Anonymous No.7615116
>>7614805
thanks. here's what I drew today
Anonymous No.7615123
>>7615106
Yeah, that's pretty much the same thing.

You can use lines, but the trouble is, most of the form information is in the values. Moebius used mostly lines, but he takes advantage of a lot of little tricks to exaggerate the contours and make sure everything still looks nice and 3D

I wouldn't go for a midpoint, though. Lines over rendering makes environments feel very small, it works okay in interiors sometimes, but landscapes you really want that sense of scale to come out. Think of it in terms of line weight. Your lines get thinner the further away from the camera they get. But in a landscape, that distance is so far, that basically everything always appears lineless. And if you break that rule, your background appears uncannily close to the camera.

That would be a nice touch, her clothes are heavily inspired by Norwegian folk dress but with a little modern twist specifically her waistcoat and a little with her undershirt. a lot of the designs featured on them are really pretty, Im most fond of the patterns from Telemark, Norway. The patterns I chose were from Øst Telemark specifically. I really like traditional ethnic European garments in general but I have a fondness for Nordic garments, Norwegian in particular. I'm just a sucker for rosemaling embroidery though >picrel is an example, I used the bottom right for her collar. I think a lot of ethnic design elements in clothing are unfortunately ignored in a lot of art spaces in particular fantasy, and I think that's a shame because there's potential for a lot of originality there I my opinion. but I might be ignorant on the subject. I was originally thinking of adding a babushka shawl but wasn't sure if it would clutter things up too much with her neckerchief, but maybe something like a bow or a barrette would be a good idea.

I don't draw realism though, which obviously plays a crucial role in this discussion.
Just wanted to point out that you made a false statement.

The problem I personally see with the art mentioned, is that the artist adds almost no author's note to his drawings. No clever stylization, no gesture, no artistic experimentation in the values or colors, no imagination. It's well executed, but simply boring to look at.

drawing from imagination means you take all the hours you drew anatomy and other shit from reference and make something new from that

Have you never fucking drawn a tree or something from scratch? You can go oh I'll give it a bunch of roots I'll vary the thickness of the stem give it spiky leaves or some shit
at the end you have a tree that you've never seen before but its made up of tree parts you have seen or studied before

I'd say go soft when indicating the palms on the hands, the shadow parts are so harsh they themselves look like lines, makes em look more wrinkly and old lookin cause of it. Same with the collar bone but to a lesser extent. Also personally given this style you have going on I think you should just draw her right eye even though it's covered in hair like how anime and cartoons do it, it fits with the style you have here.
Overall very good though, very clean and expressive

Look at your posted image as a thumbnail. See how the nearer sunglasses lens is a large black blob that dominates the center of the photo?

With the possible exception of the ear, the vertical positions of your elements are reasonable. The horizontal positions much less so. It's as if you're positioning your paper to the right or left of the photo for comparison as you work. Try positioning below or above, too, once in a while to check positions of your elements, especially early on.

You should watch morco bucci's videos on color theory, everything I know about color is from watching his videos and practicing.
How to not go overboard -- have a hierarchy setup for colors , push one color to max saturation (your focal point) like I have the fish , other colors should not complete with that so decrease there saturation.

Process
1 look at the reference for 5min.figure out the major shapes , light direction, light temperature.
2 think what you want to enhance what you want to leave out , where you will put the most effort, what parts will be most saturated and contrasting, where you want the viewers to look
3 block in major shapes, average value, average color
4 then remember your goals set up in step 2 and keep painting, have fun , I feel like color should not be restrictive it should be fun to paint it.
