PNG is a lossless format, meaning it preserves the colors, resolution and alpha exactly how it's saved. A screenshot uses your GPU to take an image of your screen. Leads to compression, artifacting, variations in color, etc.

Urasawa Naoki's Manben is a documentary series that follows a different mangaka every episode, about 45 minutes each, as they work on their series. The first season is especially dense with good episodes, 2,3 and 4 also have a good episode here and there and there's a few interesting ones in Neo as well I suppose.

Episode 1 is about Higashimura Akiko, the author of Kakukaku Shikajika.

I wasn't the anon who recommended it, actually. I think the reason the other person did recommend the specific episode is because Higashimura is said to be really fast at inking and you said something about taking an hour to ink something. The other anon probably wanted to show you someone inking really fast, though I'm not sure what the didactic effect of that is supposed to be

Nonetheless, Manben is an interesting show so I also think you'd enjoy it.

I watched the Krenz video course because i wanted to learn perspective but he doesn't really teach figure drawing, I still think it's the best course because learning how to rotate a box is everything, literally everything becomes easier after that, I use a cube instead of a circle for the head, and for almost every part of the body I only use boxes lol

A couple pages of my insanity. I might have a legit medical issue because my ability to concentrate goes on and out.
Some of the heads on the bottom left are copied off a YouTube video. Just trying to copy the girl's drawing from (her) imagination actually helped me regain my ability and I was able to draw my wife fairly well (not pictured.) I feel better and I don't understand what's happening to me. After the first few bad doodles I was so exhausted I couldn't go on without a break, but later I could draw without getting tired (there's more pages but you don't need to see all that bullshit, a sample is enough to make my point.)

been fixating on line quality/confidence for the past few days, I don't feel like I'm making much progress with it (if anything my lines are getting worse as I try to adapt)
my mind keeps having lapses of concentration where every 15 minutes I'll stand up to get away from the paper without any reason, but it usually takes more than 15 minutes for me to get into a "flow state" where I can actually tune things out and focus solely on my drawing so all of my efforts end up half-assed
it's tricky because I feel like these exercises might be a meme but at the same time I'm wholly unsatisfied with how I approach drawing, having to correct nearly every line I make, so something has to change

No, it's not selfish. You're right. Personally I would like to do a vertical format, but it doesn't help me to do this efficiently. I tried, and I just can't "hold it", it's like infinite sand running through my fingers. Like I said in an earlier reply, setting clear boundaries and solid restrictions to your format guarantees a "bulletproof workflow". The vertical format is just unmanageable, it's impossible for me to put a limit on how lengthy that vertical "one page" would be.

Watch this video. It's all you really need to know about painting and it outlines a process to organize your modeling factors. Keep in mind, if your shapes don't look right in the first stage of painting, look at your subject and correct them as best as you can before moving to the next stage. You are still drawing while doing this, it's just a different idea/philosophy which Harold Speed refers to as mass drawing. Emphasis on shapes rather than form. Someone gave you a repaint in the previous thread or in the thread before the previous. You should go check that out.

Alright, attempt number 2. This time I know for a fact I fucked up. Especially the face, was trying to do a realistic eye multiple times, kept erasing, redoing it until I went "fuck it" and went with this weird compromise. I worked on it a bit yesterday but had some stuff going on so I ended up doing most of this evening. Still I *think* I did the anatomy and gesture better. I am doing a side-by-side with the ref (>>7619759) and it looks much better. although I am not fond of how I made the arms a little bit wonky. I didn't bother with as much with detail. Third attempt will be the charm, I'll work on it tomorrow

>>7620360
>Comparison is important for learning. It helps you figure things out faster
Yep, although the curious thing is. I used to do comparisons of just looking at something and then looking at the ref. But putting them side by side in small thumbnails seems far more useful since I can actually see it more from a grander scale
>He’s a fighter, so only watch his videos if you're interested in gaining more knowledge about that. Otherwise, it’s not necessary
That's fair, I've only done a bit of martial arts, but I am still a beginner in that field too, so either way, better to get more knowledge
>Honestly, just pick a single full-body, single light source reference that you like, and work from it for a week. You’ll improve faster by working iteratively.
I'll go with this pose for now and work on that. If I may ask, what's a good consistent regiment to keep up? And should I do it with multiple works a day per week? Just curious, since I never seem to be able to find the right "schedule" to do it right.
>One way to develop this sense is to try the poses yourself and get a feel for how they actually feel.
I see, I actually tried that before, but I foolishly didn't use a mirror, the thought didn't cross my mind until now. Makes a lot more sense for getting the feel. I do notice I still have trouble with gesture in general though, I need to work on that
>>7621611

>>7621741
blud spent more time typing than drawing :skullemoji:
>>7621765
An hour to draw roughly actually, only like 5 minutes to type. Most of the time was spent erasing and redrawing several parts admittedly since I was struggling to get things right (I guess it wasn't really my day?). Plus I kinda felt parts of it was already a lost cause and I knew that continuing to erase it would leave marks that would look off in the final version. I was satisfied to have kinda gotten the basic pose right. Like I said, third time will probably be when I get it right.
Although, perhaps I *could* keep iterating this version. Maybe it'll end up looking better if I keep correcting it? I don't know what's the best path forwards here.
>>7621765
>>7621773
Actually, come to think of it, this portable scanner doesn't pick up any of the weird indentations from the constant erasing/pressing of the pencil I've been doing. That's interesting. Other scanners I had before would pick it up and make it look like ass.

I was just funposting, don't worry about it. Deep introspection is crucial for developing your skills. Watch some Vilppu videos, it might help expose where you're going wrong. And ultimately, get that mileage in. Keep drawing and you will get better. Start drawing from life as well, it will greatly improve your observation skills.
>>7621783
Just a man of his time
>>7621796
>I was just funposting, don't worry about it.
Yeah I shouldn't take stuff so seriously, but it still did try to force me to spend a bit more time trying to see if I could iterate it. And surprisingly, I did manage to somewhat fix some aspects of it through erasing. But I am still not fully satisfied, eyes look wonky, I have trouble with details on the gloves, etc. But it is better than before.
>Deep introspection is crucial for developing your skills.
True, though I sometimes have trouble with seeing the solution, but I think maybe I need to spend more time on it, I feel my issue is I don't spend as much time and give up a little too quickly on something if it's too flawed. That's a habit I should kick out.
>Watch some Vilppu videos, it might help expose where you're going wrong.
Good idea, I held off of Vilppu since I assumed I needed to have some knowledge of some other fundamentals, but maybe that was incorrect of me, so I'll do that.
>Keep drawing and you will get better. Start drawing from life as well, it will greatly improve your observation skills.
The funny thing is with drawing from life is, I've tried it multiple times, but I sometimes end up needing to move for whatever reason (which is quite often), and in the process I lose the angle from where I was drawing. I kinda have trouble with drawing from life for that reason. Is there a solution to that?
>>7621796
>>7621811

>>7621811
You can actually do Vilppu's gesture drawing method with virtually no knowledge of your subject (although knowing anatomy is extremely helpful). You really just need to know how 3d forms move and overlap in space, which admittedly can be challenging (this is where life drawing helps).

It sounds like the subjects you chose to draw from life were too complex and took too long. Pick some small, easy subjects to start and draw it in a single sitting. Something like a bottle, a pencil sharpener, a laptop, basic stuff. You will want to upgrade to more complex subjects eventually but it's a step by step process. If you're serious about putting in the work, I highly recommend you check out the dynamic sketching general. Not only will that help you with life drawing, but it will improve your line confidence and speed. If you do end up doing it, DO IT IN PEN as instructed by Peter. Seriously.
>>7621820
>You can actually do Vilppu's gesture drawing method with virtually no knowledge of your subject
Excellent
>You really just need to know how 3d forms move and overlap in space, which admittedly can be challenging (this is where life drawing helps).
I know a fair amount since I did practice with Drawabox (I was roughly near the end of Lesson 1 before I paused a bit to try and practice on some references for like a week). But I think practicing some more doesn't hurt.
>It sounds like the subjects you chose to draw from life were too complex and took too long.
I am embarrassed to say that it was very simple stuff. Like a glass of water, a bottle and uh. Yeah. Ironically my most success with life drawing was drawing something complex, which was a replica skull I had.
>If you're serious about putting in the work, I highly recommend you check out the dynamic sketching general. Not only will that help you with life drawing, but it will improve your line confidence and speed. If you do end up doing it, DO IT IN PEN as instructed by Peter. Seriously.
I'll check it out, thank you. Just what I needed. I was kinda lost about where to go with the current state of how I draw, so I am absolutely grateful for being pointed to the right direction. And yeah, I have a few Fineliner Pens I can use. I don't mind doing it in pen, Drawabox already helped me with desensitizing myself with using the pen.

redlining pj-anon, what is the benefit of trying to redraw from memory multiple on the same ref vs just copying a ref and overlaying it just once and moving on to the next ref?
>>7621955
the overlay thing is more important and is responsible for 90% of your gains, since it's what crystallizes your basic shapes / proportions / forms. also, don't just overlay once, try at least 10x on the same image, so you can fix your mistakes somewaht. overlaying also builds your observational muscles, which makes everything else you do better

memory drawing is a way of quickly growing your visual library in an imprecise way. It's fine for details and subjects that inherently don't require precision, like trees, rocks, bugs. (see: feng zhu's "JUST DRAW" lecture).

i recommend memory drawing for beginners because overall, beginners will improve just by drawing anything, and the overlay thing is more for taking you from intermediate to advanced, but beginners will benefit greatly from overlaying too
>>7621896
>for you, the best thing you could possibly work on is simply doing more master copies. Find artists you like and try your best to copy them as best as you can.
I genuinely wish I had this advice when I was a teenager. I foolishly was under the impression for decades that copying was basically plagiarism/laziness and there was no value to it. Thankfully I realized quite recently (about 1-2 years ago) that copying is very useful for beginners, so I've actually started to do that more. But I should get back to doing that more consistently, I kinda stopped for a bit since I wanted to try and copy from real world references, but I probably made that jump too early.
>But Vilppu can mislead people because he says "don't copy, analyze!" but really, analysis is just a deeper, more nuanced version of copying. But your'e still copying
That's good, thanks for the tip, that would've messed with me if I had stumbled on that without knowing that distinction.
>Copy copy copy copy. Copy art you love and redraw from memory.
Redrawing from memory is one of the few things I haven't tried yet. Definitely should now that you mentioned.
Although when I meant regiment, I meant like how much time per day I should roughly spend. Is there a rough idea on that? I suck ass at time management, but having basic time goals I should achieve per day might help me have a grasp on how much I should do and keep things consistent.
>And draw from imagination alongside that
Good idea, I've been doing less of that, which probably isn't the best. I need to keep things balanced if I want to improve steadily.

Either way, I am really grateful for this advice. It's pretty much what I needed. I was stuck for a few years since I genuinely didn't know where to go from here, I am glad I ended up posting here and finding out what I needed to progress.

I had a thread a long time ago where I saw someone work through the entire guide up through Bridgman and Loomis, and he genuinely went from mid/beg/ to /pro/ level in a year. If you can dedicate time to it,it works wonders

Yes, that's how I started out drawing consistent and proportional faces (measuring the eye heights). You may also want to include an indication of where halfway point of the head height is (it differs in some styles). Keep going.
>>7621976
>No problem! If you want a structured guide, here's one that works really well:
Thank you! I appreciate it. This is ideal for me.
>I had a thread a long time ago where I saw someone work through the entire guide up through Bridgman and Loomis, and he genuinely went from mid/beg/ to /pro/ level in a year.
That's definitely VERY motivational. I really can't thank you enough.
Out of curiosity, do I really need to study Loomis? Because a part of me went through his stuff and kinda felt like I understood already a lot of the theory that he was presenting and that I didn't need to study him too deeply, but maybe I was just being short-sighted and superficial.
Bridgman is definitely someone I was considering, though I was rather confused by how I was meant to go through it, but the guide seems to have had the same experience, so I'll go through it regardless.
>as for time, just do as much as you can stomach per day

>>7621611

>>7621965

and by multiple overlays, do you mean redraw some ref from scratch for each iteration?

i'll give it a try, but my concern for doing the process like that was that i felt i couldn't distinguish if i was making a copy a certain way because i saw the difference vs remembered the difference on a second run and made the change without much observational intention.
Just found out about clipping masks idk what I'm going to do with these but I assume lots of people use them for a reason
>>7622004
hey, this is actually a really good observation

if you just overlay once, then you need to put all your effort into observing the ref very carefully and trying to nail it on your first try. But if you do it multiple times, you're not improving your observational skills so much, but you're improving your knowledge and memory of the shape

I think the multiple times better approach is better overall, because it still improves your observational skills gradually, but it immensely improves your shape and proportional knowledge

if you just overlay once, that is the better strategy for improving your observational skills and is better for painters / people who want to get good at life drawing

either way, both ways will improve your work a lot

>>7621993
when i first started drawing, I noticed that if I tried to do 2 hours or more of drawing a day, I got RSI. It got so bad to the point that now, I have permanent trigger finger in my pink, and if I close it too much, it locks up

so my advice is just to gradually increase the length of your sessions over time. If 30 mins is all you can do, that's all you can do. Don't worry about it too much.

Today, I can draw 6-8 hours straight, but that's only becasue my tendons got stronger over time
Not really sure what I was thinking with all of the loose shading but it was a nice experiment I guess. Braids are hard.

I wish I had looked it up sooner. it does really seem to help with getting line accuracy so maybe I can try to learn inking.
>>7621741
>>7621814
That's the spirit. The arms are looking much stronger, and that little twist of the wrist is good. Where you're failing is in copying accurately. For example, you're still missing the overlap between the head and right shoulder, and because of this, everything else keeps getting harder to match. observe that the farther away you get from the head, the more accurate it gets (fists, elbows, negative shapes).

>Especially the face, was trying to do a realistic eye multiple times, kept erasing, redoing it until I went "fuck it" and went with this weird compromise.
Then stop, take a breather, and make a key study or note on the same page and then keep going with the drawing. That way, you won't have to keep struggling in a small space and smudging everything with eraser marks. The masters did it, so should you... and you have the commodity of cheap printer paper, which they didn’t.

>If I may ask, what's a good consistent regiment to keep up?
I don't know, I'm not the best person to answer that. I just try to draw every day and do my best with the limited time I have. Today I'm sick, so I did a doodle of a virus. Last week I did a map study. I believe that in the end, everything adds up if you put some effort into it. Other than that, there's a beginner book like Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. It gives a lot of important art lingo that you'll need to solve your drawing problems.

Another day, another hour of Bridgman studies.
Back to copying since i still didn't knew what i felt like drawing, the face felt very uncomfortably wide, but the bangs help with that, i already had tried to make it wider and even then it fell short, i think this is going to be a pain point for a bit, but copying helps with that as i can reassure myself i should just trust the process. Otherwise the chin and general structure of the face, besides the spacing of the eyes, even the hairline i got pretty much within margin of error on the first try so pretty happy about that

>>7622206
i haven't tried is the default procreate chalk brush ok?
>>7622216
probably, chalk brushes is was commonly suggested for lineart by many people.
What are some good (obtainable for free methods) brushes I can get for clip paint line art? I'm using the normal Gpen thats built in right now and still feel like somethings off, maybe my tablet settings

>so my advice is just to gradually increase the length of your sessions over time. If 30 mins is all you can do, that's all you can do. Don't worry about it too much.
I see, that's a great idea. I'll try that. That definitely encourages me more. Point is, I need to keep it regular either way and then increase it over time. That's great.

One more thing. You mentioned overlays to the other guy which are a good beginner tip. But that seems to be moreso for digital art (at least from my understanding?), is there any way I can do that with traditional art as well? Unfortunately I don't have a tablet (I used to, but it's in storage and I can't access it for a while and due to a series of misunderstandings I accidentally got a MASSIVE tablet instead of a smaller one, so it's harder to carry around), so for now I can really only work with paper and pencil/pen.
>>7622409
that explains a lot
>>7622407
>a freaking hippo
No anon, unlike the pathetic 3d foid this 2d woman has an actual ass
>>7622405
thanks man. though I dunno, the model's got her shoulders turned inward, so the plane of her back is pretty smooth. I wasn't sure if I should draw the lines for her clavicles. it's hard to draw with line when there are no edges or creases to go off of
>>7622421
increasing the ass is fine, theres no need to make her calves the size of jupiter though
>>7622427
draw us a quick sketch based off that ref
>>7622428
for what purpose?
>>7622423
Now that you said about the shoulder being projected forward(protraction), I should have made the scapulas more separated. Even though it doesn't appear well defined in the model, I think it's good to mark it on the drawing as a form of practice.
>>7622427
yooo those calves are slightly bigger
>>7622377
the flat lighting and airbrushing in these photos make for terrible refs

>>7622443
tbf a lot of that is just the colouring, i think i did good work on that. could be improved, but it still looks pretty good. pen pressure really does wonders
its just really hard for me not to do chickenscratch lineart for some reason, where the lines are not wobbly, especially when using a pixel brush
>>7621695
I already did and nobody replied to it dumbass.

>>7622448
very mean-spirited of you to be posting in the beg general. I'm not sure what issue you have with your own lineart, it works well with your rendering. line confidence doesn't matter, choice of brush doesn't matter. you don't need pen pressure, emulate by chickenscratching harder, you do that already in the drawing you've posted. btw die talentrat

>That's the spirit. The arms are looking much stronger, and that little twist of the wrist is good.
Thanks! I had a feeling I was getting those subtle details right, but at the cost of the larger form unfortunately.
>Where you're failing is in copying accurately. For example, you're still missing the overlap between the head and right shoulder, and because of this, everything else keeps getting harder to match. observe that the farther away you get from the head, the more accurate it gets (fists, elbows, negative shapes).
Gotcha, I'll go ahead and do that. Thank you.
>Then stop, take a breather, and make a key study or note on the same page and then keep going with the drawing.
A key study/note? What do you mean by that exactly? I am not quite as familiar with that term?
>I don't know, I'm not the best person to answer that. I just try to draw every day and do my best with the limited time I have.
That's fair, I'll go ahead with that.
I already did try Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, though I never finished through the book entirely, it might be wiser for me to get back to it.

>Learning
>Go at it for hours at a time, burn out each time
>Try to take friend's advice to limit time drawing to like, 30 min
>Stop at 30 min
>All I can think about for the rest of the day is drawing
Is there a way to stop this? I know you're not supposed to ask "how" questions, but how do you separate yourself from drawing for the day when it's time to?
>>7622591
But there can be more than one surviving

>>7622594
No

>>7622596
:D
>>7622598
I burnt out once and I learnt some things:
Don't draw just because you feel the need to draw.
Don't draw to improve, draw to have fun.
If studies burn you out, study for a max. of 1 hour a day and then do fun drawings.
Draw things you're passionate about. I was not passionate about learning perspective but I am passionate about drawing my favorite characters. So I limited perspective to like 10 mins a week or something.
It's not a race, it's a marathon, remember to have fun. It's supposed to be a hobby to enjoy. Don't put so much pressure on yourself
>>7622602
Thanks for the thoughtful answer, anon! I'll try my best to just keep it simple and about what I enjoy. Maybe I'll stay out of these threads/twitter for a bit, just to avoid comparing.

>A key study/note? What do you mean by that exactly? I am not quite as familiar with that term?
Just draw the part you're struggling with on the side of the paper, but bigger, like in this example from Raffaello.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Raffaello,_studio_per_la_madonna_di_pasadena_2.jpg

He was most likely having a hard time with that hand, so he isolated everything else and spent some time just drawing the hand.

Then he went back to the main drawing and continued. Or take his drawing of the little boy (putto) >>7622110 that leg must have given him trouble too.
