So, is he finally making the game he wanted and puts his art skills to use?
You aren't going to tell me he wasted hundreds of hours of his life on a skill he dropped and never going to use again, are you? He didn't draw for 3+ years just to remain a permabeg?

Did two sets of 10 hands from quickposes.com (300 s).
Picrel is the first set.
I was struggling to finish anything at the beginning of the first set but by the end of the second set I was able to do them in roughly half the time (although I do think that some drawings from the first set are better) and I didn't need look at the ref for the most part after analyzing the pose once, which is very comforting.

At the end of the day it all comes down to how long you have been practicing (years),you start to memorize rhythms of the body, you start to feel the form.
it sucks that the hand that I have that's more adept to drawing is the same one that's lacking the fine motor memory to do detail work or straight lines

and I see. So random lines along the form? Or specific lines that define the form?
>>7635796yes! basically i noticed a long time ago my work with my non dominant hand is a lot more fluid and less "crunched" than my work with my right hand, so I sometimes draw with both, but it's been a while since I drew with my left hand exclusively for a piece so I've lost some fine motor. you'd be surprised what you learn from doing it.
>>7635797No random lines
Curve the lines along the form
Look at the face drawing i posted.
The side of the face is like - curve the lines over the cheek bone , then it goes in, and finally it goes over the jaw.
It's like out-in-out.
>>7635557Better or worse or the same?
>>7635804No, that's what I mean.
Do they have to be random lines 'along the form', as in any line that follows the 3d shape, or do they have to be some specific lines like some particular muscles etc.?
>>7635813That's up to you (the artist) what part you want to put them on.

>>7635820Btw these are exercises to make yourself familiar with the form of the subject you are studying, which can be anything.
You do not need to put them in final illustration, they are just to help you understand the form.
>>7635546I've always loved this meme.
It's probably just a me problem, but I've been going to art classes and art meetups and like, nobody there gives my drawings the time of day. >>7635828I understand that. These are supposed to build your intuition on drawing 3d forms right? not necessarily to train a skill to use them all, but to understand what lines and curves will convey clearly the shape of the subject.
I just saw this other thread about how you tryy to draw contours on 2d blobs to train for this somewhat too, so I attempted picrel as well.
The top portion is some geodesics and otherwise 'straight' loops (latitudes) to convey a blob like shape and the bottom part is me trying to draw random freehand squiggles and making them morph to the 3d blob I have in mind.
This is similar to the exercise you're suggesting right? Obviously not a substitute for it, but it's a quicker way to practice contours if you can't be arsed to draw subjects to study I guess.
>>7635849The bottom part has fine troughs and crests to be clear, it's not a smooth blob.

half an hour of gesture/figure (I still don't know the difference between the two)
I just want to get to a point where I can just draw from imagination, like projecting what's in my mind onto the page, but at the moment it feels like I'm only improving my skill in copying stuff that I see in front of my eyes, rather than building up an actual understanding of it to use later.
Hopefully in a few weeks I'll notice a dent or have something click.

>>7636258>found a 10min from the other day, it's usually as long as I can manage before I end up going over the same lines or correcting mistakes, at which point I just say fuck it and move onto the next one.I would highly recommend adding long(er) figure drawings into your routine. I don't know what your schedule is and how much time you have every day, but half an hour of a dozen gesture/figure drawings is only going to get you so far. I don't know exactly what style or ultimate level of quality you want to be able to draw with, but presumably you want to stand out in that regard (as well as other regards). long(er) drawings, say 1+ hours, helps to push your knowledge beyond what you know or are comfortable with (even if you don't necessarily like the result). speed will come with time/knowledge, so in the early stages don't worry so much about how long it takes you to get a figure to x point. the main goal should be trying to gain the skills to get a figure to x point, then learning shortcuts to still get a desired result but in less time. now how often you should work on an individual for 1, 2, maybe 5+ hours is up to you, but it should be something you do with some frequency (even if it's once every two weeks); and, of course, you don't have to do it all in one sitting, but can stretch it across multiple days. I saw noticeable gains with my figure and portrait drawing when I started doing longer drawings/studies.

That and the angles of her head prevent an overall likeness to your reference. Use a bigger brush for your hatching and watch some Reiq for some solutions on facial features. Take your time making light marks before you commit to a decision. there's a lot of different approaches to hatching. You can hatch in regards to the atmosphere, light direction, form, mood, or a combination of all of them. Just make sure you hatch with intent in representing the subject as best you can.

If you study their work, you’ll notice a lot of convex lines (the famous egg shape) used to create a sense of roundness and softness.
For contemporary examples, look at Cutesexyrobutts. Analyze the figures you consider soft and count how many distinct convex lines appear on a single limb. Take a look at the right leg you drew, all the structure you built up with the blocks ends up being represented by a single wavy line.

As for critique, your lines are somewhat straight and messy and overlaid things come off as being 2D i guess. I don't know how to fix that though.

the locks you drew make the hair look more like dreads because you didn't really observe the flow of the hair and because you aren't tapering the locks off at the edges enough
like on the right side of the hair it's not necessary to piece up the hair into locks because 1. the lighting makes it hard to see and 2. because it's all just one shape. regardless, you seemed to observe the flow of it incorrectly, cause it's flowing diagonally and not straight down. with a bunch of hair like that you would only really need to detail where it separates from other sections of hair or where a highlight or some shit is

Extreme perspective is hard and the hardest part is that in real life extreme perspective commonly doesn't even look good. You have to tweak it and search for something that feels both correct and appealing.

how long should you do a study for? i'm very /beg/ but this took like an hour and a half.
would it be better to do 3 quick ones that are pretty shitty compared to 1 somewhat shitty one?
>>7637957unless you're primarily working on patience (and perhaps other things secondarily) in a study, don't worry about time but what skill you're trying to build. if you're trying to work on accurately constructing a portrait, say, it may take you three hours depending on your skills (and the scale of the drawing), while for another an hour and a half. as long as you're pushing yourself and trying to learn in that/those area(s), that's all that matters. you can work on shortening your drawing time later.
in short, "long" is relative. but the benefit of doing a long study relative to what you normally draw is that it forced you to get outside your comfort zone. obviously you can just scribble in that additional time, but assuming you're actually trying, and paying attention, there are things to be learned. how much you should do it in comparison to "shorter" studies/drawings is hard to say, but it should probably be something consistent in your study routine.

>>7637757Too lazy to redline/draw over but I liquefied what I thought didn’t look exactly right
>>7637969Thanks for the answer. The practice for this was accuracy training since I was told that's the best foundational skill to build.
I just got a tablet and this shit feels like cheating. Being able to draw a line and then drag it over reference to see if it lines up and nice and quick feedback. I just hope I'm not abusing that.
>>7637973i think it was meant to have more perspective
>>7637975You can use the software as it's intended and free transform, liquify, nudge, redraw, etc to your heart's content to save time, it's really up to you. But if you're primarily concerned about accuracy and the temptation of your software's features is too great you should do some or all of your studies in trad tbqh.
Training accuracy is a huge slog and will be painful to start, but when you become more accurate you also become faster which will aide you in the long run.
>>7637975>I was told that's the best foundational skill to build.that's probably true. I would be more specific and describe it as accurately *seeing* the relationships between the different parts of a subject (e.g. what the vertical value of one point is relative to another, what the horizontal point is relative to another, the angle of this line vs that line, etc.) with that and being able to construct a subject from primary forms (spheres, cubes, cones, cylinders) you're well on your way.
>Being able to draw a line and then drag it over reference to see if it lines up and nice and quick feedback. I just hope I'm not abusing that.depends on what your goal is, but a convenient way to check your work isn't "cheating." if you want to be more cautious about abusing it, I would say try to accurately construct your reference to completion (or what that means to you for the particular study) and *then* check; as opposed to drawing a few lines, putting your drawing over the reference, then drawing a few more, etc. so as long as you have some restraint and can wait till the whole thing's done, I don't see the problem.

Also a little goes a long way with perspective, i think most drawings are pretty much orthographic projection anyway. Generally proper perspective is really limiting so most extreme perspective drawings are smoke and mirrors and whatever "feels right"

>>7638232>you need to know anatomy tooI had meant to ask, what's a good place to start with anatomy?
>generally the more things move away from the center of the page the more they will turn awayFair I can see where that comes from but I also have a little bit of math autism, I try to work out the vanishing point for every set of parallel lines in 3d by finding the line parallel to the picture plane that is perpendicular to the set of lines and then finding the vanishing point on the horizon line of the line wrt to that. But I still sort of eyeball the actual lines after finding the VPs.
Admittedly, as a result I'm really struggling to do urban landscape stuff with a lot of perspective just because of how much time it takes to figure out a single line, and my perspective isn't even very good after that.

I don't mean this to be rude, I genuinely mean this to be instructive, but if you simply don't yet have the skills to be able to draw what's in your head faithfully, lamenting about it won't make it so; all you can do is take your skills where they're at and try to work upon them to the extent you can and are willing.
one question would be whether you can draw things that appeal to you at all, because if you can't draw that sort of stuff with measuring and correcting, you can't reasonably expect to do so without them. another question would be what/how much effort you've made to this end. I haven't tried to work much on it myself, but I hear there are practical resources out there to work on your ability to draw from imagination which work. if you don't already do it, one thing I suspect would be very useful is master copies/studies: trying to recreate portraits and figures from artists whose style you want to emulate, and cataloging those poses and features.
Beg niggas be like I just want to draw figures in any angle from imagination (literally hardest thing possible) is that too much to ask?
good morning ic lets draw lots today !
>>7638314Any place to start is as good as any, it's more important to look for very specific information, test it then take a visual note and keep them somewhere together so later you can even order them for better memory recall. You should know best what information you're lacking, you can look through sketchfab, books on archive org or ehentai, video tutorials, dissections, other art etc
It's good to know all the geometric rules behind perspective but it's only a piece of the puzzle

So how the FUCK do I get started painting digitally? I feel like it's so much harder to do than drawing. Drawing just gives you concepts that you could easily transfer to a tablet but painting feels like it's specific.
I want to start working with color and value, but no idea where to start. Is there like a course for digital painting or some shit?
I'm trying lots of things, nothing works really.
Probably I'm trying to many things and I got too many info's going around my head?
Tried to avoid lines, tried to compose full body, tried measuring references and without... Tried shading in various ways
Anything I try looks never a step ahead, but a new source of mistakes
