>>7638505 (OP)>I'm in the pic (twice)Huzzah
Anyway. Working on a reference from the OP pack from the artistic reference thread.
But I can't get the face tilt right.
Other than that, is the anatomy and proportions mostly correct? I'm also trying to make my lines cleaner.
>>7638510Another thing I meant to ask.
Is the perspective and foreshortening correct on the girl (roughly, I mean. I messed up in centering the room but I'll correct that later)?
>>7638511Thread Challenge: Male Edition
>>7638513Maybe post the ref so people can compare it
>>7638516I was going to but it's on my pc and there's no power right now.
So it'll have to wait until then, my apologies anon.

i'm the dumbest prebeg ever
>>7638523the box looks wrong too.
>>7638523>>7638523You'll do fine anon.
But, why do the vertical lines vanish upwards when you're looking downwards? (assuming that is supposed to be a perfect box)
>>7638512man i just dont know how you hard round brush chads do it
Pretty new to art, started a couple months ago but I have moved onto semi realistic humans now from landscapes but the struggles begin with attempting to make my OC character look older as shes not supposed to look young but my age and height. so aside from a nice rack, anything I can do to make her look older? I can't draw good looking milkers yet and it doesn't help that I too am quite petite
>>7638539The more detail you do, the older they look (try giving her saggier cheeks and in general divert away from the super simplified features.
>>7638547Thank you, I'm going to fix the face with saggier cheeks, a sharper jaw and better eyes then see if I can make the pelvic/pubic bone a bit more pronounced. Think that will help too.
It's hard adding details and I don't even know how to shade yet but I'll try my best.

>>7638505 (OP)This is one of my best pieces. From a reference.
I've just started a couple months ago, I keep going from this to totally ugly messed up stuff, like one day I feel in progress the next day I'm darn awful even if I use reference and sleeves time on it...
Are things going to even out and click?
Today for example I tried to study a pose and the results were deformed kids sticky figures .
>>7638528>>7638534whenever i try to rotate and zoom i fuck up perspective in my boxes, but i have to rotate to get better looking freehand lines...
also couldn't find my rubik's cube so had to start blender and use it's light tool to observe and understand basic shadow

Digital gods... There's plenty to crit here but I want to focus on the process. How do you get perfect lines for the hair shadow? Is it really pen tool for 2 hours? Also, my regular lines seem to suck as well, but I guess I should just spend more time cleaning them up.

>>7638607You can speed shit up using lasso or premade brushes, you can use blending modes like add for highlights.
First block out big shadows with lasso I'd say then add smaller with brushes. Then add highlights. Lastly add rimlights. Honestly I never render in color so maybe you can check if there's any process videos of artists you like coloring hair

>>7638609Hereโs more about the hair shaping
>>7638617draw where the sun would be, and extend lines towards the box to find how to project the shadow. if the bottom of the shadow is correct, the top corner should project much more sharply in the same direction. If you want to consider the back correct, then the bottom should be almost flush with the side of the box.
Only way you'd get both sides to project like this, would be if the light source was almost on top of the box, but then the shadow would not extend nearly as far.

ive come to this conclusion that this board is basically pointless unless you're trying to be a digifag animeslop artist and very few have the mindset to give criticism about anything but that

Is there a tutorial somewhere on how light work on knight armor/metallic surface? I'm going insane trying to understand how to represent it I need someone to hand hold me through it.
>>7638686that one is very reflective. if you haven't already checked out tutorials for reflective materials do so, but a way to simplify them is that they have a very high range of values and reflect color from the environment
>>7638686also, as a way to try and do the reflections themselves, i try to imagine what i would be seeing from the plane's perspective, and paint that.
>>7638686erm sho bashikally u put the color of the environment onto the knight :333
so a knight in a field in the day would be green on downward facing planes and blue on upwards planes for the sky :333

People will follow what they like and their tastes arent wide most of the time.
Draw what you want and people who like it will follow it.
>>7638835Dude I have seen xim struggle with the most basics of fundamentals like perspective and this whole muh fain art is just bullshit to justify being unable to draw anything that isnt a foggy face and a obese torso.
Fine art is also finished pieces and paintings that take months to make and not just the swirly sketches that you can find in old master sketchbooks.
>>7638848And? He draws what he loves and the following he has are people who will always be there to praise what he likes drawing.

>>7638848I might do that as an experiment on using an alt account and see what happens drawing blatant effortless coom only...
>>7638777I like the shading you got a good grasp of colors and lighting, but you need a bit more focus on anatomy/perspective/volume. The chest is nice, but the abs are completely flat, and probably as a consequence of that, the adonis belt is entirely fucked. collarbone/traps is also a very messed up area, all wonky and overall looks flat. IMO it's the hardest part of the torso, so practice that a lot, focus on learning the different volumes that make it up and practice that from various angles. same with arms, focus on how the deltoid bulges and sticks out more than the triceps/biceps, not the other way around.
>>7638851That's what i'm saying
>>7638849and yet, I've made more money off of my work than you ever have. funny how that happens, maybe fundamental skill isn't everything, lol
>>7638853>blatant effortless coomWhy are you so quick to disrespect other artists' wants and tastes and what they choose to pour over thousands of hours into?

>>7638867doesn't matter, the people that like my art are the people I want to like my art, which are other people into fine work. you can dislike it all you want, but it doesn't change the fact I'll get money and praise for it either way, and get commissions etc. just how the cookie crumbles

And a place like this can be useful in that regard, as a Placebo, just a "fake device" to motivate you to do stuff that you wouldn't do otherwise. Use it in your advantage, don't suffer for it.

>>7638586Nice, but why are her eyes hidden? Is she blind?
>>7638780Nice. What's the character with golden mask? That looks cool
>>7639902Depends on how much effort you want to put in and what you want it to look like. Some inking styles are still pretty sketchy. You could clean your sketch up a bit more, the refine it into inked lines. Could take two or three passes.
Also everyone is a bit blind to their own inking, usually it looks fine to other people.
Saw this recently, pretty good advice. 1st tip might not help some people.

This too, long and rambly but worth watching.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc850blMZkI
>>7639902prebeg advice but you should ink what gives your sketch it's personality. For the right portrait for example, the line at the end of his mouth is much shorter in the inked version while it looks much better in the sketch.
There's always the issue that since you ink over the sketch, it's difficult to see what exactly makes it worse/better while inking so for the first few times maybe you should photograph the sketch and reference that while you ink?
For the line weights and stuff, other more experienced anons are advising better.
>>7639932Also desu your inks do look fine to me. Ehat you're probably experiencing is that the hazy form of the sketch makes you brain fill in some details with the image you have in mind, making it feel better than it actually is.

I'm trying to extrapolate the pose of a clothed reference. But the proportions near her hidden leg seem very off to me. How do I fix that? It's supposed to bend backwards at the knee and then rest on the toes.
Also, does she look like she exists on the floating chair and floor tile? or does she look floaty?
Sorry for the poor contrast in pic, I used a hard pencil this time so I can easily work over it with a softer pencil once I'm satisfied with the body and pose.
Posting the ref after this post.
>>7640053The jaw is not spaced from the lips and closes too abruptly like a prism on the bottom end. Also the right cheek (from the subject's view) looks bloated because it's supposed to be turned slightly away from the picture plane.
Same with the eyes, the line that connects the two should be a little slanted towards the horizon and the left eye(subject pov) should be bigger than the right due to foreshortening.
And the nose points straight out at the picture, it should be turned away.
Otherwise it's alright. Good job anon.
>>7640084And I feel that her hips are a little botched too. >>7640325I meant to say that of course you're struggling, you don't know how to paint in general, going from trad pencil drawing to digital can feel daunting because its a different medium. Learn in which ever way is easiest for you. The skills you learn either way are transferrable because you'll be training fundamental knowledge. Each medium has its own obstacles. I learned digital first then worked backwards from that to learn trad.
>>7638885Hello fellow beg, if you look at the left most box, it has diagonal lines running and intersecting in the middle of the box. You can use that to make an outermost plane, and gauge the size and length of the form within the plane using that. You're doing a good job estimating the curves of the form, just remember to use more squarish forms to get the proportions right.

>>7640455What do you mean inwards perspective? The 3/4ths angle? For this one I just chose an angle that accentuates the small waist and hips. It's a pretty common pose for sexualizing female characters, specifically that flow of movement in the contours that I've highlighted with red lines. I'm not saying you should use it for everything, but it's like a cheat code for making a provocative drawing with minimal effort if done right. Maybe that's what you mean?

And hey, I'm also ass so my opinion isn't worth much, but I think that your mistake with legs is that you were trying too hard to draw them in perspective, when there's no need for it. Her legs are just as close to the observer, as the rest of her body. Actually, they are even closer than her torso, so if anything, the legs would look bigger in perspective, not smaller. For example, watch this video. It'll give you an idea of how painters go about their process. You're at a stage where you're just using the brush to take your paint from point A to point B. Which is fine, but that's hardly what you'd call painting. These examples are more impressionistic than anything, but I'd say impressionism is a good step up for beginners as it teaches them to begin thinking about scenes in shapes of color. Once you get that foundation down, you can push into realism, look at things like tonalism for learning brush techniques, portraiture for learning fleshtones, etc.

>>7641259Good job anon.
If you want critique and that's not just your style, here's some - The perspective is off. The verticals and horizontals are parallel to the picture plane thus all perpendiculars should meet at a common center point where the picture is focused and roughly the one under the shop banner do, but all others don't. And the top surface of the wall to the left should not be visible since it's above the station point and the parallels on the boards at an angle to the picture plane do not converge at a common point.
Finally, all verticals should be parallel and point straight up, even those at an horizontal angle.
But great job at the composition. Really looks like a back alley establishment in a seedy urban district.
perp
md5: 8bc2215faa8c88581defb92bfec2dded
๐
>>7641327Also, since the banner is angled horizontally, the golden lines should only strive to meet at a common point on the green horizon identified below.

>>7641259great job, I think making the alley ways black could look cool.
>>7641327While it's correct that the perspective is off, you have to keep the cone of vision in mind. Blindly following the vanishing point can lead to unappealing distortions because of how the cone of vision works.
If the image is meant as a pre-render for a video game, I would honestly leave it as is, maybe with some minor tweaks, but nothing too drastic. From what Iโve seen in backgrounds from lucasarts, sierra, and pc98 games, they usually do one of two things: either transform the objects outside the cone of vision into two-point perspective, or just flatten them completely.
Would you say this girl looks androgynous based solely on her face?
Permabegschizo... It's almost time for work...
>>7641355The scene he shared in specific won't introduce serious distortions as the cone of view is rather limited and I was going off based of that.
But yeah, if it's supposed to be a video game background, incorrect perspective basically becomes a necessity.
But even then, I prefer how some games like The World Ends With You do it with a stylized and exaggerated irregular perspective rather than blending different perspectives abruptly.
>>7641369>won't introduce serious distortionsWhen centered properly to be clear.
>>7641355>I don't know how to get that fade/wash up purple effecti did it in all black, did that thing where you spike the rgb in tonal correction and set it to overlay, gradient mapped another copy with purple, set a copy of the og on top, and then a low opacity divide layer on top. theres probably an easier way to do it but its not hard
>>7641376Gradient map was one of the things I was going to try. Thanks for the tip, anon it reminded me of old pc98 games like Policenauts or obsession.

>>7641327
>>7641384Picrel is one of the screen backgrounds in twewy. The game prefers to keep all the distortion (for longer maps it adds a little curvature but the distorted perspective is still kept for the most part.
Admittedly, it's one of the very few styles that pulls it off in an aesthetically pleasing way, but still. I much prefer it to blending perspective. But then again, I also love the style of Full Throttle/Grim Fandango/Monkey Island etc where they chose angles carefully to introduce the least distortion sometimes.

๐
>>7641565>Not glaring but the arms seem to thin out abruptly near the deltoid musclesi dont really know what you mean by that, can you explain it differently?
i drew a woman, took 1hr. i dont like the face.
can you be better at drawing one gender over another? I feel like I can draw girls just fine but most of my art of guys tends to look really /beg/.
I really don't even know why I'm worse at drawing dudes, I draw almost as many guys as I do girls. It's not a lack of experience. I really don't know what causes this
>>7641572You're a million times better than me so it's probably my eyes playing tricks on mme but the deltoid muscles are the upper muscles that connect to the shoulder. In your pic, the right arms feels like it bends to a width just slightly thinner than what I feel it should bend to, but that's probably my inexperience with the angle.
Picrel I suppose but I'm not entirely sure if that's correct, probably not.
>>7641592And yeah I guess the major part of that is that I'm getting used to thinking about anatomy and in my mind the deltoid is like a three pronged muscle and it should peek out a little like I drew over in the pic in the 3d form I'm making up in my head.
Even if, though unlikely, my observation is correct, you're employing a fair bit of stylization so it still does the look great to me, so I don't think you should heed me regardless. Also it probably differs from body type to body type.

low/beg/ opinion again but I think it's usually fine to omit those muscles but in this particular case, the stretch is prominient enough to have to flesh out those lines I guess. But again, you have more experience so it's your call.

Can you use the Socratic method to improve your drawing skills?
>>7642107Stop thinking about cringe shit and just draw, little niglet.
>>7642062thanskies eheheh
>>7642071mogs me (real)
>>7641992rip the love of my life
>>7642107>>7642108dont know but it sounds ominous
>>7641941It's not bad, but it's clear you don't know how to block out shapes well yet, but it's a good attempt. I think you did very well on the background trees but you chose a complex subject and you're using a small canvas, that's gonna be hard to get right at your skill level but still a fantastic attempt at learning some painting techniques, great job. You should watch this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6xygqAyzmM
and note some key things they do. For example, their canvas has a warm underpainting. With acrylics which I'm assuming you're using, you typically mix it with with a little water to establish a base color depending on your subject. How you determine this has a lot to do with color theory which you don't have to worry about now, but you should focus on how they're choosing their colors, the consistency, (is the opacity low? perhaps they're mixing water here, is it higher? less water) and how they block out their painting.
This is another video that also expands on blocking out your colors and brush economy if you want to learn a bit more on that:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSeA1xEaV6I
I think you have good potential, but the thing is you're brute forcing paintings without understanding color theory. It can be very daunting, but I think you're up to the task. I suggest you follow along with lessons like the lime paintings so you can understand how it is people use acrylics, oils, watercolor, etc.
>>7642124omg i love the cute lamb sex monkie pls draw more
something of the same genre i drew a bit ago but forgot to copy the layer reeee!!
>>7638505 (OP)Absolute dead beginner. I haven't drawn seriously in any capacity in over a year, and I haven't drawn consistently in over 10.
First drawing with a Wacom One drawing tablet. I mainly used my mouse before now.
How am I doing? I want to draw something else, but I figure I should get criticism before starting on a new project, especially this early on.
>>7642177what a cute creature too ty
>>7641624Just wanted to play around with screentones
>>7642163You should focus on this one character/design. Do another and try to simplify the design more and more. That's a great piece for getting started on a tablet.
Is it the display screen tablet model or a screenless one?
>>7642193peril impeccably based once again
>>7642193It's a screenless.
I appreciate it! I practiced for a whole day by using the pen exclusively as my cursor for games, typing, browsing, etc. Friend of mine told me to do that. It helped a lot with understanding the friction and such.
Is there anything you noticed that I should work on, specifically?
I really like the idea of being able to have broken lines (meaning noncontinuous) and still have it make sense. I really like this piece you posted because of that.
i wanna draw good
i wanna be a good drawer

>>7642193OHH i just noticed it was you that redrew the arm for me wasnt it? Now that i think about how you draw lines it makes sense! Thanks again peril (^-^)
>>7642204>It's a screenless.COOL!!!!!!! That's great! I still prefer screenless ones. A middle sized one, yes? A middle size tablet helps a lot.
Thank you anon! I like the design and the color scheme, very clear and readable. It's too soon to try to "advice" you, so don't pay much attention to crabs right now. You could be a Rat of Talent (ROT), and you need freedom to explore that talent. This place gives you that, you can throw all of your early experiments and attempts here, and laugh at the reactions, while progressing though try and error with out consequences. Mainstream social doesn't allow you to grow freely like that.
About the broken lines, it's not so "intentional", but just "convenient", because I'm doing it "on the fly", but if I have to add color, I need to close those gaps anyways.
Glad to have you here.
>>7642198>>7642200Thank you so much anons!
>>7642230Thank you Monkee anon!

I'll add you

>>7641663, but the ref is right there, so don't think you need much advice. You clearly know what you're doing. You're doing your own take on it, looking very nice and stylish so far.
I did a pretty quick "interpretation" of your ref on picrel, just for fun, lol
>>7642268>very cuteee !!Thank you Tremor!
>>7642271No, I don't have Discord. I spend enough time here already to add another time fidget XD
>>7642255Seeing a newbie immediately praised confirms the rottenness of the talented rubbish
>>7642255my dyslexia read "janine" as "jannie" at first
>>7640440>>7638920Thank you, anons. This is after a lot of deleting and redrawing, but I am starting to have a better grasp on curvature after using plans to break things down, and more boxes, of course.
>>7642304oops, I meant planes. One thing I've noticed is that I need to cut down the number of form lines I've been adding. It probably just means that I am too insecure, and I don't know how they actually look like. Another problem I realized I was having was that I wasn't using angle lines correctly. I started drawing arrows to help me visualize when something is not straight.
>>7642348always nice to see your posts
>>7642255>hat's great! I still prefer screenless ones.wait really?
i once had a wacom too , but my innocent eyes need to be nose on the screen apparently to draw efficiently, so for me its a samsung s tab
>>7642348cute doggos
I went into the thread about improvement, many have made great progress in a year, I haven't been able to draw a normal figure for a year, everything is constantly shitty, it's really impossible
It's pointless for me to draw whatever I want, it'll just be shitty because I can't even draw basic shapes properly
>>7642230thank you, cute sheepl
Attempts and training will not give anything, it is nonsense, out of 100 drawings of the torso, 93 will be in the wrong perspective and the remaining 7 will coincide with the right perspective, and so with everything else
>>7642359Well yeah, that's literally what the process of practice is. It's structured failure.
>>7642124i made them smaller
>>7642366OMG
thats perfect
small enough to actually cling around a cock
>>7642367i really love when one party is like small enough that they aren't much bigger than the penis that's why I keep drawing spamton so tiny
>>7642360>>7642361I don't have any finished drawings because they would be crap anyway, these attempts lead to nothing, I can't consciously draw a normal torso, I don't understand how a normal figure should turn out, all attempts are garbage, I don't know how to draw arms and legs, and heads are the worst, crooked faces, abnormal skulls, etc. all this crap does not improve, no matter how many books and videos I watch, there is nothing drawn that I and others would like, here beginners are often praised for the fact that they are already good at drawing something, I will never like these meaningless scribbles
Still working on this req for this one girlie on /a/ ugh itโs been weeks and Iโve been too stressed this week like why is everything against me recently ??My oven broke, my washing machine broke and my car is still getting fixed whyyyy
>>7642354>>7642355>>7642359Anon cheer up itโs okay, one drawing at a time I promise u itโs gonna be worth it in the end
And these talented nits say "just draw", just draw shitty figures

>>7642351>wait really?Yeah, my attention shifts constantly, and I need whatever I'm looking at in "one linear plane". I mean, one horizontal fixed angle where my eyesight can travel horizontally between screens without moving the "rest of my body" lol. So I keep my hands always on my tablet while I move my sight through my screens. I have two now, but I need to fix the third, out of service rn.
A display tablet forces you to compromise your attention and posture to that one devise and for an ADHD schizo that's like wearing an straitjacket.
Have a quick reflexive limp monke
It's worthless, it's crap, I can't even fix the fucking lines, no one here has such shitty ones, maybe this creature that draws disgusting deer people has disjointed and incomplete lines, what's the point...
how do I stop being a permabeg?
>>7642379The fucking strays bro.. Deer cant take a break

>>7642381Just draw! and have fun! Yay!

your lines look fine anyway I think you should try doing some figures with a pen or a pencil with a thinner point
>>7642349>>7642351Thanks. Wish I could draw humans in pen only but I'm not even close to being that confident yet
>>7642408These lines are crap, with a properly sharpened pencil, a crap torso, a terrible pelvis that should stick out forward but it is flat, all this crap is flat, no books or videos will help if there is no spatial understanding, guess how I got the boxes?

>>7642486hot. I'm really liking how monkey is getting degraded in some of these, very specific kind of degradation
