Obviously fundamentals work. You don't need a high IQ you just need the drive to keep at it and make shit with what you learn. study facial anatomy and proportions and how said proportions affect how a character is percieved
study form and anatomy and make sure to do it from different angles
in terms of anatomy, when you study anatomy go big to small
step 1

>combine them

>analyze your own work and see what looks off

>study that area until satisfied
