This is my biggest and blackest doompill.
If you dont know how to copy you will never learn how to draw.
Toddlers when being taught how to write are made to replicate letters and numbers over and over and over and over tracing them, drawing inside shapes, making them with soup and shit, filling entire books with letters. They even sell dedicated notebooks for infants to learn how to write.
The same goes for drawing.
If a child never learns how to write the letter "a" correctly, can you expect them to have readable writing or even know how to write?
No.

Of course that some get it right off the bat, some can make up very beautiful and elaborate handwriting, some can forge anyone's writing and some never learn cursive but still...

Anon, I haven't posted on here since 2019 and only started lurking recently again so I'm ignorant of what other exercises you might've tried but I think it would be worth it to try using a grid, it'll help you better understand where everything is placed, I don't think freehanding is doing you any favours or helping you learn much right now, also tracing can helps loads too. Just find an artist you like and trace their stuff until you can freehand it/copy it without a grid, much easier on digital though.

I don't have an inspiration really, I'm constrained by the low resolution (1000px in height), so I do what I can with that I have.
The size of your canvas affects your "style", that's for sure, you have to adapt. I'm sure that if I work in a +10000px canvas, or on a big piece of paper with inking tools, I would draw much more different. Much of the stuff that I posted here I can barely recognize as mine many times. The style adapts to the medium? The medium conditions the style? I just wing it most of the time lol

I actually liked it at earlier stages too but I was kinda set on making it a more "finished" piece just as a short-term goal

A few more figures of people, fucking flat shit, sometimes it's pointless to rotate a simple torso shape because it will sometimes give the wrong angle, in place of the pelvis you have to draw some unrelated scribbles, in any case it doesn't give perspective. The arms and legs are also flat, no matter how you move them, there's no sense of depth, the composition doesn't match either, fuck, there's no common depth and perspective, all the normal figures I've seen have it, fuck, how do you make it? In other figures you can feel this commonality, that they are located correctly in space, I'm tired of it

I understand how to draw a cube on the ground (ie lines parallel to the ground) with 3 point perspective, but how do I go about drawing a cube that's rotated to where its lines aren't parallel with it? Like say it's balanced on one corner, where I go about placing the vanishing points? Image related.

everything seems to indicate that you really need knowledge of anatomy even to know how to shade /s, well somehow I sensed it some time ago but I didn't want to see it, I watched a Stephen Bauman course to understand why I needed to study facial anatomy, it was very good, I improved my control of spatiality on the canvas quite a bit since the last time I published here, the final shading was to prove that I don't need to use references to do a simple shading, although I value the contribution they give in lighting or difficult poses. My brush work is still pretty bad so I depend on the airbrush in one way or another, I also have some control in the development of edges to communicate the transition of the shape so it doesn't look so bad

Usually it is fine to draw on both sides. If you wanna get your money's worth, you might as well draw on both sides.
Some mediums can bleed through to the other side, so it might look weird. Dry mediums can rub off onto the other side and make it messy too. Sometimes the paper has a smooth front and rougher back too, you might notice it feels a bit different to draw on. Some people want a cleaner or presentable sketchbook, so they only draw on one side.

My wife said she can't imagine an apple, she can't imagine anything visual. Yet she can just draw my portrait out of boredom sitting next to me, can draw silly pictures with animals purely from imagination, everything with perfect proportions, likeness and confident lines. All with a pencil or a pen too. She doesn't even draw regularly, she draws like once in a year when she is bored.
It took me months just to be able to sketch something vaguely resembling a humanoid.
And you will tell me talent isn't real.
