There is a need, because they are extremely different from the rest of the medium in style and writing. People know exactly what you mean when you say anime. If the word anime didn't exist, then we would just have to use "Japanese animation" instead. At no point would referring to it as simply animation would ever be practical. Calling it anime just lets us be more efficient.

Note the lack of アニメ in the attached image! It's exclusively 海外アニメ because there are language will often use different terms for observations that demonstrate a fundamental difference in form or character!
