Only if you're using screenless. Screen protectors on displays pretty much ruin them and makes it harder for the pen pressure to register, even making them skip. Just wipe the screen with a damp microfiber and the light scratches go away? Are you guys seriously drawing with the same pressure as writing on a chalkboard?

Screenless is cheaper and sturdier. I got an intuos draw for 20 bucks. There are plenty of people who buy one, use it once, find they don't like it and then sell it for cheap.
Display tablets are more expensive, but also more intuitive to draw on. I don't like that my hand is in the way of my drawing though.
I got an S6 Lite and I use it every day. Probably more than I should, I've found that my drawings improve more if I draw properly on paper than the scribbles I produce digitally. The workflow that has yielded my best results has always been sketching on paper - scranning/photographing - touching it up digitally. I find my display tablet more fun to draw on but the results didn't really differ much between me using the display or screenless tablet I have...
One big thing I noticed was that this Samsung tablet is actively destroying my back and posture.
I'd casually recommend drawing on paper and touching things up with a screenless tablet on pc for this reason. But that's just me, maybe you won't share my horrible habits.
Ideally, you should find a way to try out both kinds of tablets. Go to a big tech store or find some artist friends and ask them to let you try out their equipment. I've also been able to try out CSP on 3k tablets at anime conventions. The wacom ceo was at one of them, but I didn't even see him, too busy throwing my money at the artists in artist alley. The big display tablets are still too expensive for me tho
If you live in a tiny village with no big stores, no money for conventions and don't have any artist friends then idk, take your time and look at what's on sale ig

doesn’t matter. i used each for over a decade, and loved them equally. screen, screenless or physical sketchbook, they all worked precisely the same to me. your brain quickly rewires itself so both you and the circumstantial surface disappear and all that remains is your active markmaking.
>^that’s in general, and how i really feel about this, op.
but if you want a practical answer, google the sort of art you’re interested in making to find the art program best suited to you. dive moderately deeply into figuring out which program would make you happiest. once you know the program, google the best loved tablet or device for working in that program. get that one.

Most artists do kill their backs nowadays.
They never should've let artists put paper on horizontal tables.
Much like a canvas stand, you should put your paper in a vertical position. If you don't, the top of your piece will be a lot further away from you than the bottom which distorts your perspective and also your poor back will indeed suffer.
Furthermore, the writing grip that's crossed out in picrel can still be useful for details, but if you're drawing on big paper all day, you should also draw from your arm and use more suitable grips as your main ones. Many artists have suffered from tendonitis or other problems that arise from inflexible, straining postures.
With screenless tablets, you don't have to look down while drawing, meaning that there's at least no distortion there but it'll still feel less intuitive than drawing on real paper.
As for screen tablets... There are tablet holders one should invest in if drawing on such a device.
I've never done any of this, I'm an absolute shrimp now, my back hurts so bad, I desperately need to work out but idk if this is even fixable at this point, this hunchback doesn't go away even if I strain myself to stand up straight please take care y'all, do sports and everything, don't become shrimp like me... My neck pain actually goes over to my arm, my doctor said to fix the wrist pain I also have to work on my back problems, he claimed that I can still be saved but I'm not so sure. The hunchback will probably stay but maybe the pain will get better...

Screenless works for most rendering scenarios, I would usually draw on paper, scan it, then edit it digitally. I came across some money and splurged on a screen tablet, but the only benefit I've seen is just being faster with doing lineart digitally. I honestly don't know how motherfuckers bother learning to draw straight on with the screen when doing it on paper and scanning it in feels faster.
Unless you wanna spoil yourself you can get far with a screen less one

I switched from a screen to a non-screen because I would hunch over and have my eyes 4 inches away whenever I used it. Non-screen has much better ergonomics.

If you can draw at all, then you can make a good drawing whether you have a screen or not. Literally the only difference is that the precision is a little bit frustrating for the gesture of precise line-art or drawing, but while that would be hellish in traditional art, in digital art the undo button exists, so. Get ready to redo your strokes a lot until you get them right. But at the end of the day, if you can draw a human figure, can color, etc, etc, then a screenless tablet won't magically take these skills away. So you'll just be slower.

One exercise that's good for comparison is the one where you mark two points, then try to draw a straight line between them. It's alright when you can see where you're drawing, but it's a nightmare to master screenless.

Eventually, of course, you do master screenless drawing, but it's a matter of months if not years of just drawing over and over again.

In spite of being an intuos user since 2006 I bought the huion 22 plus 3 years ago.
The brightness surprised me quite a bit and I instantly turned it down to below 50%. Have been using it as a second monitor since I got it.
It's on 10 hours on average every day. Either playing youtube videos or in use while drawing.
I use it quite a lot and have not noticed any degradation in colors and brightness. Even the pressure sensitivity feels exactly the same. At this rate it feels exactly like when I first got it. Don't see it dying any time soon.
These are my experiences on a huion. An off brand. If you're thinking of buying a cintiq then I would be even less worried as they are known to produce quality products.

Screen is objectively better for beginners because they don't have to juggle two learning points at once.
The only real pitfall here as always is price, but most modern day screenless are just riding the nostalgia coattails for prices as nothing about them has changed, while screen tablets have gone down in prices and are no longer laughing stocks as of the past.

Oh lol. I never look at the thread date, my bad.

But anyway, yeah it's a first gen 21UX. It works fine, no dead pixels or anything. The tablet buttons work, but the pen is missing its button (though I actually hate the pen buttons, always misclick and I never got in the habit of using it). The screen is well scratched. Though I think it's just a protective layer I can replace (if I can find a replacement), but I just ignore it. Works for me but I know for others that might be a dealbreaker.

Got it off Craigslist, and to me it was a huge upgrade from my XP Pen Artist 12 because of the larger screen size, and that my Artist 12 had an annoying issue where the USB-C port was too loose.
