Reposting this so more people see it:
Art tip: Write with each of your markers on a piece of paper to keep nearby to always be able to see what you need.
Advanced art tip: Don't leave the test paper in direct sunlight (like me) so it doesn't bleach out.

if you keep out in the open under any light, sun or otherwise, it will fade extremely fast, markers are shit in that regard
Anonymous No.7663672 [Report]
So I've recently picked up the Pilot Hi Tec C and while I love how it feels to use, it keeps skipping on me and it's annoying as hell. Is it the paper causing this?

I picked up a Midori MD blank A6 notebook cause I wanted a pocket sketchbook to doodle/sketch anywhere and it's annoying when the ink skips, even if my doodling is messy.

nta but It will be fine for a few years
Anonymous No.7663731 [Report]
>>7663714
no it won't, this is well tested
out of light, yes, in light, it's fucked
this goes for all markers
ie a drawing in a pile of other drawings will be fine, but a reference chart out in the open with nothing blocking light will fade in months
Anonymous No.7663759 [Report]
>>7663714
Copics will visibly fade in like 6 months out of a folder, it's just dye.

It won't be fine. My test papers are faded just after a few months and they weren't even in direct sunlight but in a room with blinds.

Expert art tip: Make sure to do it with multiple layers (scribbling with the chisel end is enough) so you see the full saturation
Pro art tip: Do this with every paper type you use markers on as they all will look slightly different
God art tip: use Aurora Store to bypass google play and get the copic app and use it to track your markers so you have a better index

>Make sure to do it with multiple layers
That's actually good advice.
>Do this with every paper type you use
Now we're getting a bit excessive.
>to track your markers
This only works with copics, right? I find that while copics are the best it's also excessive to use only those. For the price of 3 copics I can get a box of 40 cheap markers.

It seems like all sketchbooks have gone down in paper quality terms, every single dip pen bleeds like crazy and brushes look faded as fuck. Hurts that the most common ones are the Talens/Sakura ones or the Canson Art Ones, at least where I live.

>Now we're getting a bit excessive.
Only if you use markers on multiple kinds of paper. I know I only use two types with mine, unless I'm just fucking around. But it's useful to see the bleed characteristics and so on.
>This only works with copics, right?
Yes but it's extremely powerful. You just scan the marker barcode into it, can make a wishlist, track if you have ink or not, and they expanded it to include some additional information on the markers + all their multiliners and other shit.
>For the price of 3 copics I can get a box of 40 cheap markers.
I value consistency and I don't buy chinese products if I have other options. I also buy on sale or volume discounts, and dig through clearance bins a lot. I also found that copic alcohol ink is around the same price as other "premium" alcohol inks like Tim Holtz. So I can use it for multiple things.

I normally prioritize classics because I like the square barrel and the yuge ink reservoir, but I got about 15 ciaos recently from a clearance bin for 2USD each. They're a bit more of a pain to use since the cap doesn't say the number, and they hold less ink, but at that price it was a steal. The normal price makes them not worth it vs the others. But if I want to upgrade and switch specific ones to classics or sketch later I can, or I can just buy the same ink and endlessly refill these since the nibs work similarly to the sketch nibs.

The best thing is that I can take an image a client has given me, put it in the app, and then use it to color match markers to make it accurate to the piece. Or use other images, or my own photos.

you can order from amazon jp and get them for a decent price, like the 72 copic ciao set is around 1.5 euros after conversion, if you add shipping, it should be around 1.9 euros each.
Also, like >>7664219 said, consistency with copics is better and you can work out with a small amount of them too.
Obviously, everything comes down to preference and money availability, but they are kind of a good investment if you are serious about alcohol marker art.

For the price of 3 copics you can get 2 copics and 2 ink refills, which is something cheap shit markers will never ever be able to deliver
Anonymous No.7664594 [Report]
>>7664584
NTA, that's a good point too! Sometimes the cheap shit markers also come pre-dried out, and while copics aren't always consistent with their caps, the cheap markers are even worse with the cap matching the color. This one person whose goal is to test every copic tried testing the ohuhus and couldn't even get through the full big set because the QC was so bad and every one tested was so shit in comparison.

Thanks for the advice! Although for myself this won't apply since I don't use markers very often. Although I've been slowly "upgrading" to copics whenever some specific color runs out.

Are Pentel pastels good? They're so cheap I want to give them a try.
Anonymous No.7665123 [Report]
>>7664944
Not a full time pastel user or anything But I have
some and they're fun to use. Dunno how they compare to higher end brands but they feel creamy and you get nice results if you use colored pencils and rubbing alcohol with them, so yeah I'd say go for it if you're interested.

How does an art supply thread fall to page 9 on the art board?
Hmmmm...
Anonymous No.7671449 [Report] >>7671621

Because they are expensive and for the elites to use. hoarding art supplies now will be a good investment. Because in the future there won't be much, as most young artists are doing digital. I recommend dried, sealed, premium pigments if you are investing.

I recently bought the amazon basics sketchbook, I like it. It's sturdy and lays flat but, I feel like Pencil smudges on it a bit too easily

pencil marks transfer from one page to the other after you close it too but, it's reasonably thick

Alcohol markers should be stored horizontally and in a dark container. Specially the cheap ones.

I'm thinking about trying pastels, do the colors mix or do I need like 300 of them?
Anonymous No.7686080 [Report]

They layer more than mix.

Is genuine vermillion worth it? One tube is like 150 dollars where I am. Right now I’m using old holland vermillion extra but i think it tints really hard compared to the genuine pigment. Also a little worried about its toxicity.
Anonymous No.7687827 [Report]
>>7687549
Why are you interested in vermilion? Lead white I can understand, but vermilion is less chromatic and less lightfast than cadmiums while being more expensive, what's the point? I think it also needs to be used carefully because it reacts with other pigments
