Why do 99% of webcomics look so amateurish?
This made me wonder, are there any non-professionally hired online self-published webcomics/amateur "manga" artists with technical skills and quality comparable to popular highly skilled social media artists? (Specifically that advanced creame of the crop level Krekkov, Eigaka and Wamudraws are at, being extremely specific)
I tried but I legitimately couldn't find anyone, it's middle intermediate at the very best and mostly amateur artwork in the high beg range that would get laughed at on this board.

Then, why is are social media artists, coomer and not, on average more skilled than the vast majority of people making online comics as their main focus in our day and age of 2025?

Modeseven did a webcomic for a while and it had decentish art.
Eigaka is fucking slow. Like SLOW slow. He's one of the ctrl-z spammers.

Krekk's ability to be consistent is also highly in question. Dude's good, but his management of his account is awful. You have to go through so many shitposts to get to any of the art.

IDGAF about wamu personally so no comment there.

I know Pokkuti does comics but they're also fucking slow. He said he got rejected from a thai manga company years ago because he was too slow to do the output required, and instead of working on that he just presumed its a part of his artistic nature. For some reason.
Anonymous No.7664555 [Report]

Because you're comparing illustrators to comic artists and consoomers of comics care more about the story than the actual art. If your story sucks ass, no one's going to read it even if the art is good.
Anonymous No.7664576 [Report]

>they're slow
That's also a good point.
I remember watching Zonesama draw on stream one time and the dude moves likes a snail. 3 hours into his stream and I couldn't tell if anything had changed with his drawing. I don't even know how you could be that slow.

Well look at any successful mangaka and you'll see they got their start as an assistant. Usually mangakas (or the publisher) hire assistants to help, these assistants learn from the more experienced mangaka. That kind of lifts the minimum skill level of manga in general cause you need a certain level of skill to be an assistant, and doing assistant work will surely improve you skills also. You don't have that for self-published stuff

Because you can't make high quality art at a fast enough pace to put out anything satisfactory.
If you look at most social media artists that have a comic going (porn comic most likely) they take literal years to do like 30-40 pages.
One punch man has some of the best art but it takes forever to make, not even counting the rewrites, etc.

webcomics are hard as hell, and not worth the effort
people who are good focus on art that can give them the most views, commissions, or land them a job eventually

so a lot of the people who do webcomics do it because its something they've always dreamt of. and usually that means they were more writers than artists

also even if you're good and really want to do a webcomic, its still a hard thing to do since you can't really dedicate the same amount to a page as you can to a single illustration

comic artist have a weird tendency to be lazy.
U can trust me or not but i know a lot of these, most of them search any possible way to do less work. From arguing that art is not that important and the only thing that matters is the story, to use ai just to not learn to draw. Also, if i learn something this year is that eigaka and krekkov art is really mediocre. Eigaka has 0 consistency and his art flop alot when it come to fundies, while krekkov is a one trick pony that panders to trannies

actual art quality is the least important part about comics. In fact, spending too much time making sure the art is good is the reason its difficult for these type of artists to draw comics.
Anonymous No.7665028 [Report]
My webcomic has pretty decent quality I think. Maybe not pro but close enough.
A lot of the webcomics I see on reddit are pro level skill.
Most of the original comics I see posted on 4chan are more amateurish

It depends on the comic . Would you say that about a more art oriented comic like Berzerk?
Anonymous No.7665032 [Report]
>>7665029
berzerk already exists and is a very old comic from before the internet age we live in so there's no point discussing what it could have done or what its strong points are. We are in 2025 and you can either keep arguing hypothetical scenarios or you can look to the future.

Are you really asking why webcomics are made by amateurs? If they were professional, they wouldn't be making a free web comic.
Web comics are almost entirely a hobbiest's medium. If you have a career from drawing, you're not going to want to draw more at home... for free anyway. You'd turn that shit into a published graphic novel or something.

incentives are really low to make comics. I'm decent enough at it, but no money means I do it for the lulz. I enjoy a finished product, but after a 10hr day at work, i'd rather not grind a page.

I'm sure there are other variables at play, but no money or even a job offer means theres little reason to do it other than your own enjoyment.

You're competent, but for me personally, I dont care for this art style. You're not the first, so dont take it personally, I've seen people draw like this before.

This art looks like its made for animation, not comics.

With comics, you can push in more detail, page flow, etc. Right now, youre drawing as though you were animating. Little detail for smoother animation, but its a comic book. You're getting pages out quick drawing this way, but its in sacrifice of what you could be doing if you took some more time.

I encourage you to go an extra mile. If only 1.

I understand what you’re saying. The simple main characters are meant to contrast the heavily textured backgrounds and detailed monsters.

Yeah, this is my first time working with color in comics. I need to find a way to get all layers on ibis paint to go to greyscale and back without manually changing every layer. Maybe I can find a way for my whole tablet to go to greyscale. Thank you

most people in any given field arent very good. internet artists are more hypercompetative than most people. most pro artists arent really that good, they can just draw good enough and have a portfolio.
most people in art (and any other given field) dont actually slave away at any given moment to become as skilled as they possibly can, they just try to do their best, or whatever gets them paid

I might as well use this ask too, how does mine look and am I degrading? I decided to stop only studying and instead try to improve by actually making the first chapter in my comic (this is the first half above).

I’ve barely been drawing anything else, as I dont have much time in the day, but I feel I may have to spend mote time studying, as I think my skills might be degrading comparing some of the early pages to late pages.

Could you improve just through doing your own comic, or should i focus more time to studying?

You should've posted the finished page with the dialogue here, I was going off of what you shown instead earlier, then scrapped some of that once I realized this.
I think the most awkward part of this of page is the middle panels.
For one, you've laid them out as a sort of staircase, which in turn affected the first and bottom panels having a staircase shape. It would've been better if you either kept them horizontal, or have the middle panels shaped diagonally to flow better with its direction.
For two, the sequence itself, having the black girl's reaction in between while the other one is talking is a bit awkward. Instead, you could probably combined both of pink girl's middle panels and dialogue into one, and then have the black girl's reaction come after it.
