>on the metro today
>bored as fuck but don't wanna waste time doomscrolling on TikTok
>grabs sketchbook and started sketching the people sitting on the opposite seats
>girl next to me saw my sketches
>'eww, what a creep'
>started shouting some shit about privacy and me being a creep for drawing strangers
>it got so awkward and I was stared at the whole trip by basically everyone in the train
How the fuck am I supposed to hone my artistic skills without disturbing others? I only wanna draw good man

assume that you can't anon.
would you prefer to hone your artistic skills or try to control the people around you.

You could have politely shown the people opposite your scribbles, asked if they were okay with them (and assuming you didn't do anything creepy, they should have been), and then asked the lady sitting next to you why she was being so rude and why YOUR privacy didn't matter - make her the centre of attention here.

Of course, we can all imagine how we can handle a social situation that goes wrong, but you can never really predict how people will react; your subjects may object even if the drawings are flattering, or the girl next to you may start screeching even more, but I find it's good to imagine how to handle scenarios like this so that you have something of a game plan in your head should it happen again.

On another note, I hope you're not staring too hard at your subjects, like they're live models or something.

Skill issue. If your art was even remotely decent people would gush and ask if you could draw them, especially women.

Also nice story bro.

Don't draw people around you.

Draw your own IP stuff, and ignore the world around you.

Simplest solution.

My greatest fear. This is why I hardly draw in public.
I suppose hitting the gym and looking like you could murder a man with bare hands would help make people less confrontational, though.

Drawing people in real tie helps with drawing characters, tho.

This. A girl who thought I was a creep loser at work actually came up to me in the lunchroom and had a whole 180 personality change and was up in my face about the art homework for college I was doing. It was quite odd because she treated me like a subhuman.

I don't publicly draw myself, but I think taking just a few quick glances and taking inspiration is the way to go, rather than going full 'draw what you see, not what you think you see' mode and staring a hole into the subject.
Most street drawings I see, tend to be fairly stylised, and look as if they didn't look at the person too much.

I think there's an unsolved question here.
Do you need someone's consent to draw them?
I get it with photos. You obviously should ask them first since it's a direct copy from reality. And they don't know what you're going to to with the photo.
But a drawing? Most times you don't even recognize the person. There are way fewer shady things you can do with a drawing of someone compared to a photograph, so I'd say most people are more relaxed about being drawn.
It might be weird to stare at people as you draw them but if they don't notice, does it really matter?

>Do you need someone's consent to draw them?
Nope, they're in a public place. I used to do it all the time, but I didn't stare at people either, you gotta be sneaky. When they see they usually think its cool and want to have it or take a pic of it, even if it kinda sucks.

You might have an issue if you wanted to take their drawing and use it commercially, put it on your company logo, print it on shirts and mugs, etc. Normally you need a model release form for that kind of stuff and they need payment.

But yeah just a drawing, no problem, if they dont like it they can just go away and not let you draw them.

I mean. I see how drawing people in front of you in the metro could be considered weird. Too personal, too close. I don't condone the chick's behavior, but I get it.
Drawing people from a bit further away in places like restaurants or beaches wouldn't be as "intimate", imo.

Depends on the country probably. I'm sure that it counts as rape in the UK. I have seen a warning poster in the UK that said that staring can unironically can get you charged for sexual molestation.

If you draw people around you, make sure you don't draw the details of their face. Their poses are fair game. If you're drawing anime girl asses based on the people around you, then you have a problem.

I genuinely have no idea if I'm being stared at because most of the fucks around me keep asking me to draw them.
>Oh you're an artist, anon? Can you draw me???
So I *have* to wonder what the fuck you're doing.
