Does anyone have any good resources on eyes (conveying emotion, simplifying, stylizing, etc.)? The manga furries book has a basic overview of human and animal eyes (picrel), but I'm having trouble connecting the dots. I feel like I've hit a wall just copying eyes from artists I like.

Greetings /fag/s. You guys probably don’t remember me, but last year, I left to grind figures and said I would be reporting back in from time to time. Due to uni, I wasn’t able to draw at all for the last 6 months, but good news. After summer class on July 3rd, I immediately sat down to grind. Since that day, I’ve managed to grind anatomy from the toes all the way up until the neck, I’m still missing the face and some parts of the neck to memorize, but I think I’m pleased with the results. I logged my hours with the forest app, and I’ve studied a total of 82 hours and 14 minutes this month alone. I don’t know how I’m alive.

anon discords are generally a bad idea because it ends up separating threads into those who are in the server and those who aren't. Then you get drama leaking out from the server into the threads and often times the general turns into a shitfling or it becomes completely incomprehensible to anyone not "in the know"

There's a reason the OP states

You're in the beginning. The first thing you do is decide what you want to improve, decide your fundies. This might be figures or perspective or anatomy or colors etc, anything you like, just don't study more than things 2 at once. Then you just grind like >>7669353, simple as.
Anonymous No.7670832 >>7671887 >>7673388

>just don't study more than things 2 at once
seconding that advice, one of the biggest mistakes I made when starting out was doing an anatomy study but using a difficult pose or perspective, or studying lighting and colour but doing it on a figure drawing instead of simple objects. Each one of these things is difficult on their own and trying to attempt both when unfamiliar with either was a fruitless effort. Always try to boil something down into its simplest form, learn that, then when you are somewhat comfortable with each you can practice combining the two

Follow the advice from these guys, but perspective is key. Without a rudimentary understanding, even if you learn anatomy, itll look like shit.

Focus on figure drawing and get the steave huston figure drawing course. I believe they have it in the /ic/ study torrent. Thats how I got so good at figures.

That's usually a problem with big servers and many lgbt pronoun idiots and kids who don't have any use for their free time. Drama can happen in the thread as well, since many post with watermark and distinctive style.

I've drawn some horses in my time. What's giving you issues? Any example work? Horses are deceptively complicated, it's not surprising they're giving you issues if you've never drawn them before.

I'm beginner as fuck, and am also studying the basics of human body atm but I want to whatever strikes my fancy (right now it's Celesdir from Palworld).

copy pasted from my rant on /v/
>top row are my drawings. I wanted to make a nice butt drawing as my latest experiment but got overwhelmed trying to understand how the leg hidden behind the horse's leg in the reference photograph works.
https://litter.catbox.moe/b4perl1z2z1rqyzs.png
>and then there's the weird details on the fictional deer's butt-wing thing and I'm just done for the night.

I'd love some pointers.
Anonymous No.7675762 >>7675777
>>7675731
Yeah, they can be really weird. It always helped me to remember that the horse leg, despite being shaped slightly differently, has exactly the same parts as the human leg. Or all mammalian legs, really. A lot of it is obfuscated by muscle at the rump, but the leg itself is somewhat easily simplified, as shown by the pic I attached.
That said, it's obviously very hard to put into practice. I was going to try drawing a couple as examples, but I'm so out of practice with horses that it didn't turn out too well. There are some guides on YouTube that do a good job of simplifying the anatomy too.

At the same time, if you just want a good butt shot for horny reasons, then just draw the butt. Horses are just a long tube if you crop out the limbs; the hardest part then is making sure the neck is thick enough, because horses have THICK necks.
Anonymous No.7675777
>>7675762
Thanks for the handy guide, and I'll check Youtube for simplication guides.

and yesh, I do want to draw the butt at some point for horny purposes :3
But the legs are also important to show the comparative scale of the ass! ill keep grinding

Your art is really good. Very aruurara-adjecent. Don't be discouraged by social media. >>7676879

>How did you anatomy
I learned it from proko and from Rey Bustos. Rey is like a crash course in anatomy, but proko is very detailed. I would recommend that combo, but to be honest, its pretty useless without gesture and figure drawing. For that, I took the constructive anatomy course by steve Huston.

All of these courses are up on the /ic/ torrent and anyone can do it. The only issue is time. I've studied 120+ hours in total this month. I had to since I wont have time when uni starts in a few days.

Not really, I do try to to think about the color wheel and how colors play off of each other, as well as trying to ensure I'm not making things muddy or garish. But the thing is, my understanding of color theory IS dogshit so even if I try to do these things, the attempts fall short.
If I could properly explain why that happened that would mean I properly understood my shortcomings, but as it stands my knowledge beyond the basics remains elusive, and even those I occasionally fuck up, It's a matter or needing to know more before you can begin to know what you don't know.
I am painting traditionally to hopefully get a better grasp at it.

It's like I am hitting an inbuilt obstacle. There are people who barely learned to scribble but you can tell they have an understanding of cute or appealing proportions. It's something you just cannot learn. Even if I learned it would be by measuring every little thing like an autist because I cannot do it. When I posted art I'd always get compliments on something technical but I could tell nobody really liked it because it's just ugly art.
I've seen experienced artists who draw ugly shit like me and when they tried to demonstrate what's cute and appealing their art looked like shit. I don't wanna fall into the genes shit but it really feels like it's just some wiring I am lacking. You can learn to draw but you can't learn good aesthetics.

that's just cope senpai. You have to learn it by conscious effort, just like everything else.

People who draw cute now began to draw cute over time through trial and error or studying, because they wanted to draw more cute. If you make no effort to draw more cute it will never happen. You have habits that you no longer like. So you need to deviate from them to create anything new.

>fucking generic AI is more interesting to people than anything I'll draw.
Are you still the artist that drew the Ivy and alien girl above? Because if so, your statement is just patently false. I'd take an infinite number of your Ivy's over any one AI image. They're not appealing, and the work and effort you've put into your skills is apparent. I'm sad that you can't see that, but it's something I and a lot of artists I've spoken to have struggled with, so I do empathize.

In fact, in a few ways, I suffer from the opposite problem than you. I have people say they think my art is appealing, but it's not really technically impressive. I get attention sometimes, but not usually. Point being, we all hate something about our own art, but it will always bring joy to somebody. I think you will eventually learn to appreciate your work. You're skilled enough that simplifying things to make a 'cute' piece shouldn't be too hard, if you shut your brain off a little. Maybe pivot to something pokemon or just a cute baby animal or something.

Anyways, don't let your brainworms deter you. Art isn't about producing a commodity, it's about expressing yourself. Humans NEED that, whether it's through art or something else.

You need harder edges, even if you're trying to make it look soft. Don't use the airbrush so much.
I can't tell if you used multiply layer for the shading, which there's nothing wrong with, but sometimes that can lead to the desaturated muddy shadows depending on the colors. So what you can do is color select the dress and just use the hue slider on the multiply layer until the shadow color looks good.
Or if you painted it by hand just bucket tool the shadow color before you render it further.
