I'd consider your studies/copies of Klimt is more akin to a master study where you break down and try and understand an artists process and how they solve visual problems.

I used to copy art that I thought looked cool and you can see some jumps in penmanship and lineart, you just tend to miss out on the deeper lessons that can be teached and then applied to your own art. But it does help with observation in the sense that you "see" in a different way than someone who doesn't draw. I can't speak for others on why they would prefer copying art instead of drawing from life or pictures. I just know that for me it helped my observation to start looking at real life and try and recreate it. I still do studies of other peoples art but with the goal of experimenting or learning new visual solutions.

Its true. Talent is real and decides everything. The pain of being slow at drawing usually filters people out but some are stuck. Its like if you can get out of a hard place versus others who cant. Its just reality, some things happen and some things dont. If it wasnt talent, then nobody would die or have accidents because they would just fix the situation.

Here is something to consider the average person will take a glance maybe a few seconds to look at your picture. Even art interested people like ic anons will give your piece a minute at best for the most part. You yourself on the other hand spent what one? two? maybe many many hours drawing. So it's going to be incredibly hard for you to understand what someone else is going to see in your work, because you are the furthest removed from a first impression of your own work as one can be.

Every object can be said to more or less have it's set of 3 orthogonal axes. If two of those are parallel to the picture place, then the third is perpendicular and that's one point perspective. If only one is parallel, then that is the vertical in two point perspective. All non-vertical lines that fall on a cuboidal surface defined by these axes will vanish on the horizon perpendicular to the vertical that passes through the center of the picture.
When no axes are parallel to the picture plane, that's three point perspective and I haven't done the math but intuitively I can tell that the lines on the cuboidal surface will converge on a "vanishjng circle", which is a circle that passes through all three vanishing points.
To be able to draw your ref, most objects are in 3pp, so you need to find any hypothetical line on hour paper perpendicular to each axis, which is parallel to the picture plane (naturally, this happens automatically on flat paper, since that is your picture) and then you take that as a vertical, draw a line passing through picture center there and calculate the vanishing point.
Two point perspective will not cut it.

after drawing it (poorly) I wondered why you would ever need the drill to be in the collapsed state
so I might just give the mecha a drill buckler without the transforming gimmick
but on the other hand, I think it would be cool for the mecha to be in a fight, block some hits, and then active the drill to punch through enemy armor which had been weakened by sword strikes
either way I like drills and I like shields so this is a winning combo regardless of the specifics

something that helped me a lot recently and might help others that are at the beginner stage, when studying, be aware of negative space a lot. seek out structures that might help you train that, like architecture or weird shaped objects. this way you'll see the whole gestalt better and your feeling for space and size will improve by being aware of not just the contrasts and lines, but also the emptiness. ones and zeros, thats all the universe is, no? just the composition varies. good night, /ic/

I try to use just use gesture + construction with people (though for difficult poses I'll compare my drawing to a photo or a magic poser model afterwards and correct) but a library of 3d objects to use as references for little everyday things/props would be really useful, cars, guns, etc., you can cheese some but not even most of them, pictures are 2d and finding new ones requires a internet connection or having access to the thing itself. There're so many things that you've seen hundreds of times but then when you try to draw em it's like, what does this look like again?
Oh I accidentally found (?) a way to quickly put things in perspective from a planar view! To be honest though it is just a projection shortcut but still pretty nice

Retard here, can someone explain what am I doing wrong? I am trying to make a cheat sheet for boxes in perspective, starting with isometric view. I am stuck on the first view and I don't understand why the box is wrong. This is 45 degree view so every convex edge should be the same length. I take the upper plane and multiply the lengths by cos(45) because of the viewing angle. I also project it onto the line, which is how I get the distances for the upper rectangle, which seems to be correct. Now, as the lower convex edge is also in a 45 degree angle towards the viewer, it should also be shortened by cos(45). But here the lower edge falls shorter than the other convex edges, which is wrong! Can someone help me?

Outside of Gundam, Brain Powerd is another Tomino mecha show that's pretty ok. Space Runaway Ideon is a brutal one by the end. heavy metal l gaim is more nagano than Tomino and it's clearly got a lot of Five Star Stories DNA in it. FSS is also worth checking out, the ova is cool and the manga has some great art and cool fashion. Aura Battler Dunbine is a nice isekai mix of mecha and fantasy, not the most satisfying character arcs though. Escaflowne and Rayearth are both also good mecha fantasy. Votoms is like a more macho mecha iirc. Patlabor is a comfy buddy cop show with mecha, and while not mecha, Appleseed has a similar vibe to some of patlabor. Bubblegum Crisis AD Police is sort of like Totally Spies but mecha. Legend of the Blue Wolves is a mecha story with some romance and a bittersweet ending. TTGL is like Evangelion but written by Camus. Gargantia I don't remember much of but I think it was ok. Blue Gender is cool and not about tranny stuff but rather giant bugs, sort of like Gyo. There's also a number of OVAs out there whose names I've forgotten, plus other big names like Code Geass or Macross or Full Metal Panic which I either haven't seen or didn't really care for.

If you have trouble with ink seeping too deep into the paper you can get some "heavy" laser printing paper. Its thick and has a very nice feel but if you are going to get a lightbox make sure its bright enough for it.

my recommendations are a canvas stand, a very large screenless tablet that you can put on your desk or if you ever do traditional you can get a very large sketchbook !

How do I make myself focus on drawing when I have ADHD? I can't ever make myself draw for more than 20 seconds in intervals before stopping and looking at my phone or getting up and pacing around. I saw a video about reacting to lines; you have to continuously think about the lines you're placing, to see if they match the angle or length you're visualizing. I am not too happy with my forms, so I am going to practice more foreshortening and form manipulation.

i hated it at first, but its okay now. some minor adjustments might improve it, but next time i need to sketch it out better and put more effort into putting the points in the right place, because by the end i almost went very random. the only really annoying/bad stuff is the lower half. i might just do a new (and new pose/picture) and smaller version tomorrow, so i dont waste too much time if it comes out weird.

For instance, reality isn't all 1 or 2 or 3pt perspective. The perspective of each object changes relative to how you are viewing it. Something that appears in 1pt can become 2pt just by you rotating your head.
Get a box, set it in front of you so that it's in 1pt perspective. Now turn the box slightly. Now that same box is in 2pt perspective.
When it coems to drawing this, the best thing to do is MEASURE. Don't even think about perspective at first, just measure out how far objects are relative to eachother, as if they were all flat and only existed on the page. Use the width of one object as a reference point. Ie "how many tiny trashcans wide is my keyboard". On your photo reff, go to the edge of an object, draw a line straight up and down the page, take note of how close that line comes to other objects, to help you place things in the scene.
>>7670838Copying isn't a bad exercise actually, just do it better. It's all just basic proportional stuff, like "what angle is the eyeline at?" (You rotated the eyes clockwise). Get some distance from your reference, hold your pencil straight out, close one eye, and check the angle between two features on the reference to help place it on your drawing. It takes some getting used to measuring like this, but you will get it.
