Don't know if this is against protocol, but I just finished the last one posted here and would like some critique/advice on making it feel less alien. Showed my gf and she liked it, but said that if not for the bow lip, she wouldn't have easily guessed the character was female.

other no-draws will be flustered, but youre looking for critque and advice which is basically the reason for this board. its not just a random art dump, but looking to improve on your work. in my opinion and technically in the boards opinion and spirit, post away if you have questions. but as said earlier, just draw for now and dont worry too much about mistakes. get a feeling for shapes and lines and thats that. grinding is the core of becoming good at anything

A big thing making it look alien is that her eyes are too far apart. The general rule is the gap between the eyes is the same width as one eye.
Good job on not outlining her lips or nose, they could use a little more detail but begs usually go overboard and make them look like cartoons.

When you have a reference to compare your drawing to it's easier for you to see where you've made mistakes. Without a reference, and without a lot of knowledge of the subject or experience drawing it, you won't be able to pick out the mistakes so easily.

That aside I hope you start doing better and get back to drawing more often. Going through a bit of a bleh time myself and it's been a struggle to pick up the pen despite enjoying myself once I do.

sometimes its better to let a piece rest for a bit and come back to it with refreshed eyes and brain. after working a while, there is this tunnelvision which can lead to mistakes. next time, put it away for like 20 minutes and look at it again. taking notes like this is crucial, this way you'll learn. so, good job on the exercise of finding out whats wrong. next time try to find out why it looks wrong just with your eyes and deduce which line an shape is misplaced or missized

Hello anons, this is horse bones. I've done more perspective rotations. I struggled a lot. I need to do more box rotations, but I'm moving on for now. Legs were the most difficult part; you can see how inconsistent the bottom half of my figures is. More extreme perspectives were also difficult. I probably don't understand how they look. I think I will take a 3D figure, try to draw it, fix it, and then redraw it. These are from imagination, so it was quite uncomfortable.

Thanks again.

NTA but you tilt her head, the head itself remains symetrical (if the character has a symetrical head to begin with). If you tilt, say, a square, it remains a square. Picture the face inside a square. Most people have trouble with those imbalances when drawing front views, myself included. I've found a good way to avoid corrections later on is drawing a center line and sketching the face shape using it as an axis

being good at both is fine, or rather a combination. there is no issue with just scanning ones linework and then coloring it in or adding stuff to it digitally. and with pen and paper, you have to be precise, therefore its better for training purposes. no cheap way out of correcting and avoiding mistakes, whitener or eraser or a complete restart. and its cool to look at your work irl

I find digital forces bad habits on me somehow. I'm way too stiff and scratchy with my lines even though I usually draw with my hand raised off of my tablet and engage my elbow more than my wrist. I also rely on transform and undo way too much since it's so powerful. With trad I not only allow myself to make mistakes, but I enjoy leaving most mistakes as is so I can examine them through self-critique later.

It's a me problem and not a tool problem definitely. I think switching between mediums might be the best approach though to help kill bad habits.

If you compare pictures of men and women, men's brows hang lower and cast a stronger shadow because their skulls have a boney ridge that women don't. When you draw the line of the eyebrow so close to the eye, it can give that impression.

It's stylised, but I drew some stuff that might help you feminise your faces more. Realistic portraits can be more difficult because there's a lot of variety in human faces, but there's specific features you can exaggerate.

I never quite understood quick gestures. To me everything below 5 mins is just scribbles. In your case I think you focus a bit too much on contours, which in 3 minutes is very difficult to get right. In such shirt time I'd focus more on ~7 good lines capturing the movement. But as I said: I never quite got it myself. I feel it might be an advanced technique, even though it is common (Proko) to teach it first.

you are used to seeing your face in a mirror, if you flipped it to see it how other people see you, it can look strange too.

Does anyone know of any good resources for drawing the shoulders? It's something I've been struggling with a lot lately, and I can't find any particularly autistic guides or books on how they work and how to build a basic structure.
There's so many moving parts. The deltoid, the clavicles, the neck, the trapezius, the scapula, even the pecs a little bit, and all of them move up and down and forward and back. I swear this shit is harder than hands, and at least with hands there's lots of guides and help because of how notoriously difficult they are.
Any help or pointers to good guides would be appreciated.

Michael Hampton's shoulder stuff helped me, from his book and CGMA course. The 'football pads' idea. Proko's stuff isn't bad too.
It's a system of bones and muscles that work together, you need to know all the major bones, what muscles connect to them and how they move everything around. Since they float on top of the ribcage, you need to know the ribcage well first. Construct them from scratch, learn them from inside to out until they start making sense. Anatomy tracings like in prokos vids helped me too.
https://youtu.be/jKYMCGDFE9U?t=41
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2XXx6a_Nyw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNDHVSk2h6o

They can move around a lot, the shoulder is our most complex joint. Watch videos of them moving around to understand them. Do it yourself as well. Weight lifting and calisthenics videos are good for that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pg4X26PbdS4

A good collection of refs here, reverse search the ones you find more useful to study that artists materials.
https://characterdesignreferences.com/visual-library-1/character-anatomy-shoulder
https://www.pinterest.com/characterdesigh/character-anatomy-shoulder/

3d scans like pic related can help too, since the forms are more clear. This one's from 3dscanstore. 3d models can be useful too because you can turn them around to see it from different angles.
If you need more detail, anatomy books for doctors are really detailed. Ones specifically for surgeons go super in-depth.

completing proko is subjective. Once you start to feel the desire to create your own things, do it. finishing every last course is up to you, but it’s best to not treat art like a college course, regardless of what crabs here tell you.

When thinking of bottles or glasses, doN't think of them as flat cubes, but rather "buckets" that are see through. It's walls have a thickness to them that are "pure" seethrough and the inner walls are visible due to the liquid inside. The right and left side on that image where the top plane is meeting the front plane is a good example for what i mean.

The one advice to follow here is to never fall for the Discord bait. All the drama and regrets happens there when connected with this site. Don't share socials or any information, people will go out of their way to interact with you and ruin your day just for fun. I'll admit though, that screenless tablets are not that good of an option for laptops. In that case, better get a good screen tablet.. OR a bigger screen connected to the laptop to make a better use of the screenless one.

by comparing the lines and distances with each other. sometimes its trial and error. here you can see that the hair section on the left is too wide, it should be ending almost where the bangs are. and a human head is always a skull underneath, which can help you with the placing of the items in the right sections. or lets take the glove on the right as an example, instead of drawing it how it is, you rounded it, despite it having a slightly angeled straight line at the bottom where the hand enters.

its just a matter of concentration and constant comparing the lines, the empty spaces, the shadows and that will take some time. you should train your copying and concentration skills on simpler subjects in the beginning before taking on a complicated portrait. hone your eyes and motor skills. and remember the frustration you felt with this, because once you get it right and you notice you did, the sweetness will be all the sweeter. now draw some objects, even around your room. a cup, maybe a bottle perhaps? and take your time.

Since your goal right now is to improve your observation skills, you might want to try different/faster ways of representing shadow, if you must.
A soft, low opacity brush can do that just fine, and quickly. You can also keep high opacity and just pick a light gray.

Of course, the xerox machine thing is just part of the artistic trolling culture. With that mentality then the traditional Bargue Plates exercise shouldn't exist, or master studies, etc. But there's some truth in it, I don't think that the reproduction of some famous people exact photo is an "art piece" but more like an "performative skill stunt". It depends on the style and final result.

I understand. Mind that you can create the same effect faster, with less lines/work, although more care is needed.
Study artists that are proficient at hatching, like Viktor Kalvachev or Chris Legaspi. Alphonso Dunn's videos and book are quite helpful.

i dont even think that. this modern high speed society is designed on easy access dopamine rushes, something like drawing will take a while to be truly appreciated by the modern brains fucked chemistry. if you really want to draw, your lifestyle needs to as well

It still showed that none of them had to be "born with talent" in order to do well, like the perma thinks. They all still had to be taught from square one. Some were obviously better than others but they all improved.

Talent doesnt mean having all of art beamed into your brain at first. It means learning fast and progressing fast.

talent is more of a specialization than an inclination towards becoming good at a general subject. some anons have a talent for boobage, some have a talent for portraits, some have a talent for architecture or pop-art. there is no generalization, its special. everyone is good at something. everyone is talented. now shut up and draw something and dont give up till you find your thing.

Thanks, yeah the feet need some work for sure. I think my biggest problem is slowing down and and really looking at the relationship between anchor points. The fabric folds are definitely a challenge as I kept following a line of a crease then realizing that I'd misjudged it's placement.

dont beat yourself up.
at least you have the balls to post and try to draw a full body.
a lot of beginners dont even do that.
the best thing you can unironically do is incorporate drawing basic shapes into your drawings.
i wouldnt even focus on specific details like noses and eyes, just focus on getting basic perspective and proportions down before trying to accurately draw real life.

I'm sure this has been asked this, but is it common to skip traditional drawing for digital? I remember seeing somewhere I should practice fundamentals and all that on pencil first, but I imagine the medium is actually just pure preference?
