Digital artists who make TOO much money?
Not trying to bring hate to a specific artists and break rule 5, but to me it feels like some of the older digital artists make shitloads of money for being half-retired or having "okay" art (problems with same face syndrome, a style which hasn't improved, or inexpressive poses and emotions).
Why do people gravitate to old artists when there are so many new digital artists who can arguably make better work?

Customers that turns into audience will follow you and buy your bullshit until you die.

There are always newer artists that outskill establish Older artists.

But you really can't shortcut your way into the hearts and wallets of established audience.

Maybe marketing towards those audience maybe. It works with stupid Labubus.

First mover advantage and survivorship bias. They are only popular today because the standards and competition was much lower back then. Plenty of artists, YouTubers and streamers wouldn't make it if they started today. Plus you don't really hear about all the old ones that completely fell off.
It's never been about the quality of the art; it's a popularity contest. Of course there is still a minimum level of quality you have to meet. But especially for coomer stuff, it's quite a low bar. Consumers just want to consume. They follow accounts that consistently produce similar stuff because that's what they want more of the same. This tends to produce slop and that begets more slop.
Also, after taxes and fees, they don't make that much money. Some spend a lot of hours rendering too, so it's not even good money per hour. They only ones that get rich from it are ones that live in the third world where the cost of living is a lot lower.

I have special fondness for the artists that were influential to me when I was younger and starting. There has come new artists with better skills along the years, but they don't trump the old artists in the impact and appeal. If my old favs had monthly subs, I would sub, but because they simply post their stuff free, I take that. Why would I sub to new artists with whom I don't share the same connection?

Legacy. They've been around long enough to build a dedicated fanbase. Those newer and better artists will be in the same position a decade down the line if they play their cards right.
Also if you reach a point where you have dedicated fans and make enough money to get by from passive sources there's not a lot of incentive to branch your style out and potentially "kill the golden goose".

Money laundering. When you're successful enough, Russian mafia and the like will contact you to help them. Not joking.

Because they are well known. And in the current age it's much more important than skill you can be as good as Da Vinci but who the fuck cares if they don't know you. They went in when there was little to no competition.

Because the customers are also old as shit and have more disposable income.
5$ a month for some patreon porn is unthinkable when you're 17 but if you're 25 or 30 and have a job it's typically the kind of money you start throwing on stupid shit.

5 year old kids who play Roblox or "free" gacha games probably wonder why we spend 70$ on ours and think we're colossal retards too.

Digital marketing, it's that simple.
The new artists could have God tier art skills but if only a bunch of people know about them, then they won't make bank.

maybe because most of them actually do speak with clients and potential clients like well adjusted social human beings. if youre a turbo autist that expects people with money to treat you like a drawing vending machine youre only closing the gap to other giga autists hiring you for work.

I guess my follow-up question to that would be “if they are worse, even if well known, why subscribe to / follow them instead of smaller artists who are better?” But i supposed the large following makes those individuals easier to find
And >>7694949 mentions having a connection to older rather than newer artists.

I’m not fresh on the artist internet anymore, so i don’t know what it’s like when “first looking up art” so to say, but if those popular artists still appear first i guess it would make sense. Thing is their content is so old i would assume the newer artists would float to the top so the old (semi-retired artists) might take some digging to find, yet they have a lot of support still (sometimes 1/2 a mil a year doing rough math)
