I’m a pixel artist currently in the modding scene. I’ve been doing this for 2 years now, having fun and taking it slow, no worries. For awhile now, I keep wondering if it’s possible to make a bit of cash on this. There’s a lot of content creators out there big and small with a ko-fi or a Patreon. Thing is I’m not a big name, and I’ve never made any money off of my art. Is it worth a shot, or is it too much of a hassle? Anyone here with experience making a passive income online wanna give their two cents on this?

I’ll post more of my art for those curious and if the thread is going well.

My skill is already good, I've already gotten notices and feedback in smaller communities that I'm happy with. But I feel if i refocus on how I post online I can get a more wider audience.

Asset creation for games. If you can prove there's no AI used and make a well rounded prop pack you can do well. I don't mean super high res AKM #29239 but rather a tileset for a top down game.

Make tile packs / character packs / stuff packs (like signs, trees, statues)
Put them on itch.io
Learn to make a simple game project to display them
See if you can join any game jams
This will get your name out there

Things that sell the best are tile packs, and characters/enemoes with full run cycles

If you can do characters - maybe offer drawing peoples OCs (or them) in your style
Get higher payment if you animate them etc

This is my experience - I was a fairly sucessful pixel artist for a while (before getting a family and needing to pivot to a higher paid real job)

The work you posted is so bare bones, very babies first time pixel art
You have learnt the rules - but its basic
Draw a scene or a sprite thats 24x32 in size
Something bigger and something thats not (that looks) lifted from an old final fantasy rpg

Pull from the games which get better views, Mother 3 comes to mind
Check out other recent indie games and pull from them
Type pixelart into pinterest pull from that

No one will pay much for the individual sprites you have shown so far - maybe if grouped in a massive sprite pack - but otherwise nah

Also my point must have flung over your head, followers don't matter, I had a 10k+follower account and I ditched it because I would get asked for uhh can u draw me and my boyfriend in uh da stardew valley styleee type shit, I would waste so much time talking to people to make money, so I ditched it, got a new account I will almost never post on just to have my name out there when studios ask me for my socials so I won't look like a complete scam.

just that^ you find contract jobs for games on plenty of places like freelance websites, discord servers,r*ddit etc. and you go to them, applying to the job posts.

This guy gets it, doing commissions for individuals feels like a hustle and is very tiring, so much talk back and forth, change this, change that, add my fucking pet, I prefer the contract work, i get a doc/asana/board of what I gotta do, I do it, I get paid hourly or fixed on what we negotiated, simple, quick, no haggling, professional.
Also attached a very old work of mine I put 63h in, should get back to finish it one day when I have the will power, drawing as a job drains your will to draw for yourself... a lot
