I use Krita and Linux and have for years... And this is accurate. They're both shit and they're consistently getting worse over time. The UX is rapidly degrading and becoming a complete pile of shit.

Don't worry my friend. Intuos pro medium is a fine choice. Don't forget to force proportion and set your pressure curve to be comfortably maxed out. Maybe even turn on the wintab checkbox, I suspect Sai plays nicer with the wintab driver.

Krita is a great program that I use daily despite having Photoshop, CSP and ToonBoom-all of which I paid for. It has the most intuitive timeline of any option and is great for making all kinds of artwork. Sai seems quaint but if Krita feels limited to you you're genuinely demented if you're going to recommend Sai as an alternative.

You have it backwards, the Intuos 3 and 4 are the most gentle on your nibs-particularly the 3. Every model since has developed a harsher and harsher surface that:

1. destroys your nibs in a literal instant
2. the surface wears away rapidly, we're talking weeks or months leaving an inconsistent, gross feeling piece of shit in its place

Get an older model or get a screen cover off of ebay or amazon-or make on yourself out of a clear sheet of acetate or similar material and use a gentle tape to affix it in place.

The resolution does nothing to change the feel of the drawing. Whether you're on a 4k or a 1080p display it's the same, the size discrepancy and subsequent disparity in "felt" input and "seen" output is the issue.

An Intuos will feel much better on a 17-inch 4k display than a 27-inch 1080p display. Now would be a great time to consider getting a decently powerful laptop.

Does not seem to be the case for me. I have a 4k laptop and a 1080p one-both 17 inch screens-and they feel identical. Here's an infograph I'm still working on (I own most Wacom tablets apart from the very most recent model)

Just get a large tablet and pair it with a reasonably sized display, I would recommend either buying a "desktop replacement" laptop strictly for art or purchasing a 20-22 inch display at the largest. The size of the display really does have a considerable effect on your sense of control.

I see, so you're actually constraining the size of the display itself through margins, that's a novel idea, maybe suitable as a temporary stopgap as a more permanent solution (laptop/physically smaller display) is pursued. I dislike the idea of gimping an existing piece of equipment but for lack of a better option it will absolutely improve the drawing experience.

Took some time to unearth this picture from ImagineFX magazine showing what your Intuos 4, 5 or Pro is going to look like before too long if you don't put a protector over it. The 3 isn't indestructible if you're a gorilla gripper but is so much more durable than any of the models to follow as to be almost comical. The 20 year old Intuos 3 I use at work every day (mostly just as a mouse because I can hardly find time to draw at my shit job anymore) looks brand new in comparison.

I definitely agree a large is a bit too small for a display of that size. I'm fortunate enough to have an Intuos 3 and 4 XL that work perfectly for a display that large but they're quite hard to get a hold of. Wish they'd make XL size tablets again but they've deliberately manufactured ignorance as to how these devices work to help them sell screens; if people understood the truth-including the health issues with screens-nobody would want one. Anyway, XL models are somewhat flawed too in that their bevels leave them with nearly 50% larger a footprint than they actually need but they're still the very best option if they can be procured

Yeah it's really bad. I got not one but two 2019+ model "Pro" Intuos tablets in great condition for next to nothing but after just a few hours of drawing on the one I didn't intend to preserve it began to become visibly distressed.

Yes Intuos 3 work on Windows 11 you just have to download the older driver and not use the driver "app" the newer models use. I've had a few issues here and there but usually they corrected themselves somehow/would be fixed after a reset. Most of the time I'm using a Linux laptop and either Krita or Drawpile are my software of choice and they work perfectly.

Windows 11 is trash so you may have to fiddle with it a bit but it works fine for me the great majority of the time.

One of these big 3s really is still the best in a lot of ways, there's a reason Shigenori Soejima and Feng Zhu continued to use theirs for so long.

Apparently they made a new surface in 2025 release. Its nice that they used better materials but they shouldnt have reduced bezels that much. Im waiting for long term reviews of it.

To be honest even though I've been drawing for many years I primarily use my keyboard and very rarely use the hotkeys (which is a bad habit; reaching across the larger tablets is bad for you in a similar way that screen tablets are-albeit much less so).

The buttons definitely work on Windows. I believe they work on Linux as well but it just takes more trial and error to figure out what buttons in the (minimal UI) driver refer to which buttons on the tablet.

I have run into used tablets that have had non-functional hotkeys but it's a fairly rare problem

I had the "free" SAI from some DeviantArt link while I learned to draw, but I eventually paid for it when I learned it was a single dev and I had made a few hundred off commissions.
I really owe him a lot, I've made over 100k from my art now which wouldnt have happened without that "free" SAI 1 though.

I like the layout of buttons on intuos 3 xl so I dont want them to be unusable even though there are remote keydials.

I tried 1280x800 resolution now on 24 inch monitor and it feels much better with line art. Setting resolutions this low on 27 inch will be a ridiculus waste of space and using a laptop is not a solution because it destroys the purpose of non display tablets which is to pair a tablet with a quality monitor like eizo 2740 that you can put on vesa mount for ergonomics. That makes tablets smaller than large useless for anything but retouching photos. I also tried 16:9 ratio and it feels worse to work on in photoshop. Wacom is making a move towards mainstream marketing with their new 16:9 tablets.

I stressed investing in a "desktop replacement" (i.e. Gaming) laptop for a reason as they have larger and better screens, can handle large resolution files, 3D and Animation while remaining easily stowable in a backpack (I take my laptop and tablet to work and my parents' house daily, leaving my big 27 inch display and Intuos XL in my apartment).

You don't need a mount necessarily but yes for ergonomics and postures' sake you need at least a cheap stand (I'm using these 3D printed "legs" I bought from Ebay) to raise the top of your display up to your brow level there are a wide variety of things for this purpose other than the meme mount. You can also of course output to a different screen with an HDMI cable.

A netbook style laptop like that isn't something I'd recommend because, just as a screen can be too large for your tablet it can also be too small. I also am however not sold on the need for some huge display but that's when an XL should be up for consideration. I personally think the 17 inch laptop is a great sweet spot and with a second monitor for references, chat windows etc. it's a great starting point.

I wish, only L models are common enough to do something like this, but I can attest that you can usually find them complete with stylus for at or well under $100 and they're worth every penny

Here's a picture of the "stand" I use, it comes in two pieces. I'm sure there are plans out there for your 3D printer if you have some otherwise you can buy 'em. They fit well into a backpack and slide under your laptop extremely easily

Now if you do decide to go the laptop route there's another model of Intuos 3 I can recommend and that's the PTZ-631w "Medium-Wide". While it's slightly less accurate than a Large model (10%), it is about 30% more accurate than a conventional Medium tablet-but comes in a much smaller footprint than a somewhat wasteful Large 3 does as you can see here. The Large 3 holds its own with modern tablets in most ways but it just sadly has a bit more inactive area and bevel than necessary because it was made when CRT displays were still in vogue.

Remember to ALWAYS check the "force proportions" box in your driver.

What I would recommend if you do get an XL is to get an external keypad for hotkeys so that your off hand isn't permanently outstretched towards the keyboard. I'm stubborn and have been using the keyboard still but that isn't good for posture. Still not nearly as bad for posture as a screen is but sub-optimal, especially if you're on the shorter side.
