Why the fuck do people struggle so much with the 250 Box Challenge?

I loved the exercise myself. I could feel my perspective skills improving rapidly. It's rare to get that kind of software upgrade from one exercise.

Learning you can’t draw a box is embarrassing for people who thought they were going to be the next famous artist because they the 2 times they draw every week
They need to think of more reasons why such an exercise is pointless instead of just doing it

At Art Center, they have you draw pages (5 pages per point system - 1, 2, 3) instead.

i did the 250 box challenge, but i never felt like it helped me any, i already new that the lines on boxes are supposed to be parallel which leads to them converging towards a point in perspective so i didn't feel like i gained any new insights.
i found this box rotation exercise to actually challenge my ability to draw in perspective. having to get a precise angle instead of just willy nilly whatever you like.

The amount of times I see people bitch about loomis or any other solid art teacher, because they personally don't like the lessons or techniques, while missing that OTHER people DO find those lessons or techniques very useful, is staggering.
It's like people don't realise that others experience things differently from each other.

Pages of boxes.
Establish horizon line in the middle, add vanishing points then draw boxes, you can even use a ruler, this is all to develop the visual library so you can freehand them.
Also 5 pages of freehanded boxes.

because its a chore and they arent doing it to learn. they are doing it to get it done. so they rush and basically copy. they arent learning constructoin or trying to learn anything. just finish.

you're either autistic enough to do it or not and and even smaller subset of people will actually learn something because most people rush like they're grinding xp and miss the point

I'm going through it right now and taking notes as I do. It's a great learning exercise. I don't know how well my improvement will *actually* transfer to my other art, but I'm hoping it does.

I managed to complete it, but i did take a long break after 100 boxes. Also did my 50% correctly, have sketchbook almost full filled with 5 year old type drawing. My own head canon why people struggle with box challenge. Because it's a double whammy. You keep doing boxes, but you can never get all the lines to converge perfectly so you kinda feel shit about yourself. Then after doing Box challenge you have do your 50%, most who do Dab are complete beginners so you are drawing like a kid. Can't use 1 on 1 reference, either from your imagination or multiple reference. Seeing your shit kiddy drawing you feel like shit again. You have to do this routine for a multiple days. Honestly whole experience can be agonizing for a lot of people. Box Challenge is more of a mental challenge than drawing skills.

It's an unnatural challenge. If you gave it Beatrix Potter or Dr Seuss or a number of other successful artists throughout history, they probably would fuck it up for a while before getting the hang of it. Maybe some of the old masters would get the convergences right away, I'm not sure. But it's not an intuitive exercise, even for skilled artists.

Iirc right up to the box challenge, all of drawabox is lifted beat for beat from Peter Han. That being said it was still valuable to practice some of the mechanical skills like shoulder drawing and line accuracy, and form control. The 250 boxes sucked because you would eventually run out of orientations for your boxes, but yes it was another mechanical exercise forcing your brain to build a picture plane for the box to sit in, then building the box with properly converging points. I can see why people hate it, because some people's brains just aren't going to work like that.

People hate it because it’s mathematics. That’s all it is.
Social media artists want the results of knowing perspective without having to learn icky math stuff. Doesn’t help that a huge chunk of teachers teach the theory like it’s a math course since they understand perspective but aren’t too good at drawing interesting stuff with it

its from bunch of stuff. han didnt create the programs. scott robertson book does hardcore bootcamp style drilling of lines and perspective too. most of it is from college/university/technical schools. people need to learn to make lines and muscle memory for wrist/elbow/shoulder movements. they need to grind fundamentals. drawabox smart to focus on that early and makes for good intro. the box stuff is pure autism nonsense though. if it had limited it a bit instead of leaning into that part, wouldnt be nearly as maligned a program.
