Is it a bad idea to try learning how to draw without using construction guidelines? I find it more satisfying to use pictures as a reference and just try to copy it as best I can. Is this going to be a detriment to my learning in the longterm?

just copying can only get you so far
you can't find good reference for everything. if you want to draw it from a different angle, or change up the proportions, you'll need different kinds of skills that just copying can't teach you.
learning to de-construct your reference and re-construct it can help to teach you how to construct things from multiple references or from imagination.

If you want to draw something from a different angle, or in a different pose, or with slightly modified proportions, you'll need to understand form, using simpler forms that are more easy to manipulate while you can't manage more complex ones. Seeing objects as volumes instead of a sum of lines will give you flexibility to extrapolate from imagination.

It depends if you want to be able to draw stuff from imagination. If you are satisfied with the fact that you will always have to use some kind of reference to be able to draw new things, then go ahead.
But at the end of the day it really depends on what your preferences are. We don't all retain information in the same way.
The most important thing is that you actually draw.

It should make your understanding of physical objects different, which will make them more easily translated into paper when you want to draw them. It's more about how you understand and arrange in your mind than simply using guidelines.

I've learned to draw doing this.
now that I know what to do, I use some guidelines, but I don't think a beg that can barely draw something lightly should start with construction. It's like ask a little kid that is learning how to write to use guidelines and write those complicated fonts. A beg is like a little kid leaning how to write. They keep copying the text and with time they get better.

Guidelines have their pros and cons. From my experiences, using guidelines construction has helped with anatomy proportion and figuring out how the dynamic pose will look like on a draft/sketch. It allows me to see and plan the illustration and critically think whether its looks correct to my intuition. However, drawing with construction guidelines will sometimes make pose a little bit stiff and inorganic.(from my experiences) It might be different for you. And also it takes a little bit more time when drawing compare to just drawing it out with references. There are no negative side effects to apply/learn guideline construction to your art desu. So i would recommend to use it if you don't want to be dependent on using references for your work. It also depends on what your goals are with art. What do you plan to do with you art? Are you going to make comic/manga? Or do you want to do splash art illustration/movie poster etc? If you trying to do comic/manga, then construction guidelines will serve you well on the long run. If its splash art illustration/movie poster/etc then you really don't need it as much.

because it make no sense to do human anatomy practices if you are trying to make similar cartoons/comic style like Ren and Stimpy... Oh I see. I actually am OP but I don't really know anything about drawing and everything I've read has said that even if you're trying to draw cartoons you should know how to draw realistically. Is this something I can skip?

I still don't know how to draw a proper cylinder. Any tips?
