What would it take for you to raise your head and say unashamedly "yes, I am an excellent artist"?

No smart person capable of self awareness would ever say that.

Einstein:"The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know".

you'd unironically have to pay me to say that
not as in like a commission or anything, but straight up just wop like two thousand dollars on my desk to say that

I was an excellent artist years ago, I'm ok now and getting back into my old form. I understood it after I started to work with problems none of my collages even began to think about, yet alone research or develop new techniques, because that was annoying and I desperately wanted other people to solve that shit so I could just draw instead.

>>7768821
you are confusing ego with honesty. Being an excellent artist doesn't mean you're the best, or a good person, or anything, really. Only means you're good at what you do and you know it.
It's a razor thin edge to walk, never giving either to false sense of greatness, or a false sense of terribleness.

yeah, something like that. have you ever heard any good artist brag about how good they are? it just would sound stupid.
maybe if you were saying it on an anonymous shitposting forum and didnt post your work.
yeah. I AM AN EXCELLENT ARTIST!

If i'm good, i'm not excellent. That would be hubris.
If i'm good, i could be better. That would be humility.
If i'm excellent, i don't need to tell myself or anyone else that. It is shown by what i do.

Redditor "humility" is disgusting. All this downplaying and pretending to suck is ultra fucking retarded. It's not actually humble in the slightest. Half the time, the goal is to preach about how humble you are while still implying your skill. The other half of the time, it's used as an attack to drag down people who don't play this bullshit humblebragging game. It's insanity.

If you're good, just fucking say so.
If you suck, just fucking say so.

god damn

You never talk to normies; they will always project their own insecurities and treat others accordingly.

When I can draw a picture without failing or getting the art equivalent "feature creep". I assume it would require that, when I get stuck, I'm knowledgable enough to consciously get myself out of a corner and finish the image, preferably within 2-3 days.

I dunno if it really is a skill issue or just mental illness, probably a mix of the two. ADHD and biting off more than I know how to chew.
Picrel is across the process of trying to get 1 fucking picture done. It morphed so much because I can't stop myself going "it would look better if..."

I am actually good at lining and anatomy.
but I suck at coliring/rendering since my mind is yet to grasp it fully.
Anonymous No.7769221 [Report] >>7769301
>>7769208
it wont take you long to grasp once you start getting into, trust me. even people with no classical art skill can do some nice coloring and shading, its all a matter of doing it and some trial and error. being hung up on realism will only stiffle you, so just try to make it look cool. your fat bastard right there would go great with some back or light from below, amplifying the creep factor
Anonymous No.7769241 [Report]

your lining is not good there lmao. the flow and widths are too random.

do a bunch of renders of random photos of people, limit it to 90 minutes, and critique each one without letting it get to your head (it's just information. take the info neutrally), and notice patterns in your references and art. don't wait for your mind to grasp it, you'll grasp it when you do it.

>being hung up on realism will only stifle you.
That and comparing my coloring/shading to other artist I idolize. I dunno if all it takes is just brute-forcing my way to get good rendering is the way to go similar to how I brute-forced/self taught myself to get good with anatomy and cleaning my lines as best as I can do considering I am a clueless artist who got taught by some higher up artist that cleaning my chicken scratches through erasing is the best way to go instead of just teaching myself to one stroke draw.

>>7769244
Yeah I have to agree with you since I do a lot of chicken scratching before erasing the chicken scratches to make the lines look clean as possible. I always think I am a victim of a bad mentor with bad intention of mine back then, encouraging the chicken scratching + cleaning up my lines afterwards back then. I dunno. All i can say is that I learned anatomy, faces, lips etc well but yeah the lining and coloring is just something I am still scampering in the dark, producing inconsistent coloring and lining.

Probably if I was making money specifically from art - so painting or drawings.
I'm not ashamed to say "I'm an artist", or illustrator, or anything else, but I'm currently those things, so I won't say it.
I'm more than happy to say to draw as a hobby currently though.

If you said "good" artist It would be more complicated to answer but "excellent" artist? There's no need for me to ever convince myself of that because if you are EXCELLENT you would be surrounded by evidence. Excellent people are always undeniable, If you're excellent more than likely people are coming to you with work. Excellence in the wild is just seen and someone tries to build something around it.

There's no need in getting caught up in the "correct" way to do lineart, notice your patterns and make the most out of them.

Watch this, his 2nd method may be what you're looking for, also use as many sketch layers as you need to get your general idea out in case you're hesitant about the drawing itself, it will allow you focus on only designing your lines and not multitasking.

I measure myself by my ability to pay bills on my art. Which I've been able to pretty well recently.
I guess that makes me good at the commission game but a great artist? I don't think so.
In the grand scheme of things, in the scope and scale and breadth of all art history, I'm fucking nothing.
I'm a middling illustrator, the equivalent of someone drawing advertising for off brand suit jackets in a magazine in the 40s.
The master artists are significantly ahead of the average artist and are at the level where there's like a handful in a generation.
To be great, to be better than good, let alone good, is such a rare thing.

Every time I'm improving and I notice it, when I'm drawing and I barely do adjustments, and I see the before and after.

Telling myself stuff like that has helped me improve quite a bit. Hyping yourself up works!
