What makes art true art?

i think it has to be ofc man made and made with true creative or expressive intent. technically coprorate clip art is art, but i wouldnt hold it to the standard of "art" if that makes sense. the bar can be as low as "human drawing" tho

The reason being man made is important is because I believe there has to be some sort of intention behind a piece for me to consider it art. Sure, there can be an intention behind a prompt, but the image itself was made by a machine, the decisions were taken automatically. By the way, I think AI can be used as a tool to make art. I'm not completely against it. You just have to intervene it a considerable amount.

The feeling can't be too shallow, like feeling disgust or weirded out towards an inflation fetish drawing made in paint uploaded to DeviantArt, but that doesn't mean "disgust" or "weirded out" as feelings can't be a reaction one could have to art.

I was a bit on the fence about including this one, but sometimes you can appreciate something for the level of skill behind it alone. It can be enough to captivate you.

i think personally ai can be used to make art, but we're at a point where its kinda 'not in good taste' with how contentious it is. if you say you used ai in your art the majority of people will assume it means pure or majority ai generation, which either means youll lose 'cred' in art spaces or your entire audience will be AI shills. I respect what corridor digital did using AI to make an 'anime' a few years back cuz it still required a ton of actual film making and editing skill

To me, art is the experience when witnessing intention, craftsmanship, and meaning converge with expression, spontaneity, and subconsciousness. It needs both sides, and they need to play off one another. To some extent, how well they do so is up to the viewer's subjectove experience (even the artist is a viewer), but if that can't be well communicated, I feel less need to engage with their opinion. This is also why I do not see everything, or any inspiring/beautiful/evocative thing that happens to exist to be art. I do really detest such overly broad and terribly meaningless, vacuous definitions.

Yeah this is what I think too. You can definitely use AI as a tool to make art, as long as it's not purely or majorly generated as you said. I'm sure the general perception of it will change in a few years, when we start getting bigger projects that use it along human hand (that are good).

Expression that points to God (Truth, Beauty, the Good) and the Divine as revealed by Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Trinity and the Logos incarnate as expressed in the Nicene Creed and understood by the Church Fathers.
Anything else is craftsmanship, which is fine, but isn't capital "A" Art.

wish I still had it but there was a definition I saw here once that resonated. there's no singular definition but there are several traits and real art must invest in one of them

- technical skill
- innovation in expression
- motivation above financial profit
- and either pursuit of the divine or 'art for art's' sake in more secular terms

seems like a pretty encompassing definition without pretending everything is art. if anyone has the copypasta then post it.

Beauty is objectively provable by the negative, that some things infect your senses and cause repulsion and wanting to throw up (llike your mom), therefore, the opposite is empirical as well
