Is there a single example of anime/manga characters drawn in a more realistic western style that's actually appealing? I don't think it's impossible, I've just never seen it done succesfully.

I mean any art style you could call adjacent to European and American comic book art such as Frank Cho's that are drawn with realistic proportions and more detailed, less stylized faces. Artists like Neal Adams, Alex Raymond or Moebius. It's more of a range than any particular style as such. By anime and manga I'm referring to the more stylized range of the spectrum, and Cho's interpretation of Sailor Moon compared to it's source material provides a pretty good illustration of the stylistic divide. What usually happens is that the western fan art (for lack of a better term) usually ends up looking like it's depiciting a person doing cosplay rather than the character itself.

Bruce Timm's Sailor Moon feels true to the original. I suppose cartoon characters have to be drawn as cartoons to feel true, even in a different style.

You're missing out, I didn't watch season 2 but I heard it was completely different from the manga. You should just read the whole thing from the start, it's pretty cool to see how Gamon transitions the story and art into his style after the original author left (good fucking riddance since he went on to make the piece of shit that is High Rise Invasion)
