Amazing pumpkins! It’s never occurred to me to just carve the surface, how do you do it? Also this was my pumpkin this year

Very cool pumpkin anon

How i do it.
First transfer image to the pumpkin, preferably something simple.
With knife/scalpel cut around contours (but not deep) and remove skin, you must be very carefull doing this.
This are your two first layers, black and darkest shade of orange.
Cut deeper to archive lighter shades, but don't expect more than 2 or 3.
Hard part is to make a picture of your work, use some bulb or leds to iluminate pumpkin, candles don't work.
Experiment with camera settings until it actually catch values.
And expect to spend whole day on it, good luck.

NTA, ceemdee on deviantart had tips on how they did their's but it's as how >>7784196 described. I used a screwdriver to scrap the flesh but I just got myself a wood carving set.

Pic is mine I did a few years back.

I too used screwdriver before, but this year i was armed with this bad boys, they really make a difference
The flat ones are most usefull

What's your technique? Puncturing the stencil?

Yes, i first draw on paper, pin it to pumpkin, make holes with thick sewing needle and and connect them with marker
Drawing directly on pumpkin is nightmare
I tried grid method too but results were worse
