What are the differences between things that impress normalfags and things that you find impressive?

Artistic skills vs subject matter.

Can you explain further?

Normies find mimicking reality impressive
What is impressive is warping and twisting reality

Artists know what kind of effort goes into learning to draw and/or executing a drawing, while normies don't have that knowledge. They can't trully appreciate it. They can only admire the end result and mostly focus on the theme that is presented to them.

This . Subject matter was my first thought as well. I don’t think most normies find subject matter “impressive” necessarily, just more enticing, depending on what it is. Like celebrity portraits, superheroes, hyper realistic drawings, etc. I think they find it more interesting seeing more exciting things executed at a high level, but probably really recognize or necessarily care for art at a high level if the subject matter wasn’t as flashy

A lot of people will see picrel and judge it technically impressive even if they don't understand how exactly. Lots of non-artists have good taste but only lack the technical understanding, and I think their opinion is very valuable. You can't disregard them if you want to make a living through art.
... But it does piss me off when the 1:1 grid copy faggots post some pic of a celebrity and get thousands of OMG UR SO TALENTED :O

isn't that a given? you put it into so many words and youre not wrong, but you couldve just said that popular things will be popular, no matter the skill level. thats why goonshit and the newest FOTM crap will always shoot past way beyond skilled pieces and studies with the gen pop. other artists might recognize and praise your work (which is enough for myself), but going for crowdpleasing art shouldnt be the goal unless you only think of money and fame. and as an artist that knows this, you can just split your works in this manner. you do something recognizeable now and tomorrow youre doing personal stuff, keeping it in balance.

my take on this is that normies are not so easy to impress. But they love memes more than quality art. especially stupid ones like this.

for comedy you don't need highly technical skills

You’re completely right about popular things always being popular, but my problem is that a lot of artists lack the balance between the personal stuff/ studies and the recognizable, popular stuff. Like, I see doing the “boring” stuff like life drawing, fundie studying, etc. to be an avenue towards creating more interesting, appealing pieces on a larger scale. Like me personally, any creative piece I do has benefited greatly from the previous work I’ve done that was unrelated to it. It seems like a lot of artists primarily focus on what will engage their audience and not what will make them better, especially once artists have an established audience and style that is seen as appealing. I just think there should be more venturing in general
