Rendering is so hard, how do I get good at it? What advice would you give someone that is trying to start to learn rendering?

Have you tried....rendering?

>learn to render the basic forms, metallic and dielectric
>learn to build complex forms out of basic ones
>use material reference for details
and you're done

In simple terms, rendering is basically the combination of value, edges and form. Start with grey scale primitives like on GeoRef, then maybe do some still life grey scale and eventually move on to figures. Ideally something with academic or classical style figure reference with strong lights.
Those should get you like 75 percent of the way to a point where you know enough to know what to focus on next.
