If this stat is even accurate, it's including migrant workers who own a home in their village they visit twice a year but rent in the city they actually live in. Chinese boomers also spend way less on themselves so they can help their son buy a home. Obviously good for the younger gen but the older gen lives way more frugally than in the west.

Terrible idea. That's a regressive tax that gets paid by renters.

Its essentially stating that homeowners don't have to pay taxes, but renters do. Its prioritizing home owners over renters. That's not something that should be done, renting should be considered a valid option for many people, not something that is a bad thing.

There's definitely an popular but unproductive mindset that homeownership is 'good' and renting is seen as bad but that's bullshit. I personally am in a situation where renting is the better option. Perhaps in a few years my situation will change and home ownership will be a better option, but we shouldn't punish renters for being renters.

Sure, it is a tax on renters. But this would only affect renters of luxury apartments. Also, the tax rate itself is pretty low. The average person isn't renting a luxury apartment.

Before property taxes, I think China should be improving their stock market more (not full financialization like the U.S.), so more middle-class and rich can invest their money in the stock market instead of real estate.
