As we all know, it can be wrong sometimes, so you can edit it if they are not administrative divisions. I don't know if the wards are in fact third-level divisions; I didn't research it in depth.

It’s never too late. I only started saving flags into folders in May. Personally, I prefer organizing them into L1 (first-level) and L2 (second-level) folders rather than placing them on maps. I put them on maps only if I feel like it. I don’t know why, maybe it just feels more tangible that way.

Your situation is somewhat of a reverse sunk cost logic lol

the main reason why i collect flags and fill maps is that people that are not interested in collecting flags can still enjoy the thread, rather focusing on the dumping side of it. I inherited Trieste's collection that has been collecting since 2016, so my collection is and my maps are basically among the most complete out there, along a couple other collections. Other maps filled by other collectors (or at least the most detailed ones) would just be copies of mine but emptier, so no point in filling them unless you like filling maps to begin with. (again this doesn't apply to less detailed maps because those subdivisions are way more common, so starting "late" there is actually fun).
If there was someone else making maps (for the smallest possible subdivisions) and filling maps with the precision and dedication i put into it (which will never happen), in theory i wouldn't collect flag too, i would only dump which is the thing i love here

Manhattan anon, every wednesday we run a script called flagminer https://github.com/ebinBuddha/Flag-Miner to gather all the flags that got posted in the week and then we post the dump.
However, with the new backend it doesn't seem to work even if i changed to the new url in the settings. Also can you run the script and post the dump for this wednesday giving that i won't be at home? this is an example https://desuarchive.org/int/thread/209734950/#209773172 . however with the new spam filters you will have to replace all the /int/ quotes with the full URLs, which now get automatically transformed back into quotes by 4chan. for now the dump file can temporarely be a mediafire link or something

I used this map as basis for what should be the division. Independent component and highly urbanized cities are supposed to be on the same level as provinces while component cities are always under provinces. On the other hand people would really just consider them part of their province most of the time.

that being said, mining the archives is pointless if you can generate the dump directly from your backend. with the old backend what happened was that a dude (Trieste) manually run the flagminer every day to mine the archives and then posted the resulting file every wednesday. everyone else downloaded that file, loaded it into the flagminer and downloaded the flags that way. the first step will be pointless now.
so for now i would focus on having a working dump that can be loaded into the flagminer, the first threads where flags got posted when flags first came back are starting to get deleted so...

How was Trieste running flagminer then? I've started on trying to generate the XML on the backend but it's really messy as there isn't country or thread data stored, so I have to reimplement most of flagminers frontend logic.

Meant that currently flagminer is not working for either of us due to issues with it fetching from 4chan, so I wonder how was he running it was being run for weekly dumps.

Hopefully the recent flag endpoint I shared earlier in the thread is enough in the meantime.

now that i think about it, i think Trieste recently had problems mining the archives and he had to add some random browser headers to not get the connection refused from 4chan. i've never implemented that on my end

confirm, he added "random http headers used by browsers" to his user agent when he was having problems recently (march 2025)

it loads, which is a good start, but
1) inside the flagminer the link must be a URL and not the 4chan-style link, otherwise it can't be clicked
2) the default country flag must match the country of the extraflags. for example on /pol/ there's an afghan extraflag posted by a british flag, mismatched flags like that can't show up in the dump. the same applies to meme flags on /pol/ and the "No region selected" which i don't see in this dump but can happen
the rest looks good for now

also the file format must be .xml otherwise it doesn't even load. i had to manually change the extension
