I was wondering a few months ago I started learning ancient greek using this (i know le bald man and everything) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16s3pOejAXaUvQ-WCYmFrXo2cnKsl2j0efCrothCp3Y4/edit?gid=0#gid=0 but out of the dozen or so attempts I've done trying to learn a language using that spreadsheet felt the best I've ever done. I was grasping things easily, I liked the be able to swap resources and having the same info taught in slightly different ways etc, and so I was wondering for mandarin if there was something like this which pretty much says 'read this and then this and then this'?
One of the hardest things about self learning is knowing where to start and what to do so being told what to do and given a straight path was so helpful
Is there a good and fun variety of literature in Ancient/Koine Greek? I know there's a lot of philosophy, history, literature, religious texts, etc. in ancient/koine Greek but after attempting to read (in translation) Caesar's Gallic Wars and some other Greco-Roman texts from antiquity, they all seem very dry.
Like with French sometimes I like to read deep academic stuff but other times I just wanna watch something fun like a football match or a shitty reality TV in French.

Be honest, /lang/, how many full-length books have you read in your TL? I think I’ve read twenty or so and come across a complete unknown every 5 pages or so.
>Today I inputted 20 minutesI'm already tired. How do I input for 4 hours straight like most of you guys do?
>>211793302I've read around 10 first chapters, before giving up and moving on to a new book
>>211792943Not necessarily. Enjoyment is a side-effect of seeing yourself make progress and you make progress by doing the work. Apps seem enjoyable on the surface because they're just really convincing illusions of progress that demand very little from you. The sooner you snap out of it, the sooner you can make real gains and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
>>211793302I've finished about 11 in German and probably started and abandoned twice as many. I think at some point, reading harder books just to hunt more vocab doesn't seem worth it and I'd rather just spend that time listening and getting my brain to fully acquire the most common vocabulary that actually matters, going for depth rather than breadth.

Half a year has passed already. My goals to the end of the year:
1. English C1
2. French / German / Japanese on B1 or around it. 1h a day minimum. I still don't know which of these languages to focus on. As an alternative to German, I could also learn a Scandinavian language, but there are fewer materials and the pronunciation seems more difficult than in French and German combined
they really named this city Food
>>211794444>Scandinavian language>pronunciation seems more difficult than in French and German combinedonly for Danish
Swedish and Norwegian are doable, pronunciation rarely deviates far from the written language
Swedish has the sj- skj- stj- tj- sibilant autism and Norwegian to a lesser extent but that's about it
Danish has a "special" pronunciation with own idiosyncrasies, and the gap between written and spoken is difficult like English/French
>>211794444Why the fuck would you learn a scandinavian language if you don't want to move there?
I also don't understand why people say that Japanese is exceptionally difficult. German also has a strange word order, the writing can be really messy, true, but I learned the kana in maybe four days, the pronunciation is quite simple, that pitch accent doesn't seem so bad either, and French is full of homonyms too.
>>211795371>>211795662The lack of many learning materials still discourage me from choosing Swedish or Norwegian, and not many people speak these languages. I don't have bad associations with Scandinavia, they seem to be comfy countries and their languages were supposed to be an easier alternative to German

Going to Japan for at least a couple weeks with a friend in about 6 months. We’re gonna work through Genki/Tae Kim and each do the core2k and see where we end up if we practice what we learn together. (Plus a bunch of inpoot). I actually know a couple hundred words already because I went in raw and tried to learn what I could when I spent a month in Tokyo for work/school (literally studying the Navy leave survival phrases on the flight over).
Just need to work out how i’m gonna balance my Chinese with it. I might have to reduce Chinese to backburner/maintenance mode, like just do some input but cease studying more than an absolute minimum temporarily. I guess Hanzi carries over to Kanji pretty well so maybe i’ll stop doing formal “chinese study” and just switch to Hanzi study via Remembering the Hanzi in the meantime so when I come back I’ll have gotten a break from intense grammar and speaking, with an expanded knowledge of characters (which should get some practice in Japan). I was also planning on doing the 200 Kanji component deck in the next 6 months too so I figure that will amplify my Hanzi study long term even more.
Basically, I’m just going for input/practice so I can talk a little out there in 6 months, while trying to make sure I can get maximum payoff and minimum damage when I get back to focusing on Chingchong. Japanese seems dramatically easier to input just because I don’t have any difficulty with the phonetics.
Anyone else ever do Chinese and Japanese? Whether simultaneously or not? What can I expect?
>>211797327>>211799422My reasoning for you to pick Latin is confirmed by my particular dubs. You left it to chance and chance had your back on this occasion. Now don't get tempted to dabble between all your other TLs this summer, ok?
>>211770847Defrancis Chinese has been the onramp for reading Chinese for me. It’s dry, but it’s extensive and rigorous. Goes from 0 known Chinese to an intermediate level character knowledge but an advanced level vocabulary (like 7000-8000 words formed with the 1200 most common characters) over 3 levels of readers [covering over half a million characters of text in the readers alone]. It’s for traditional chinese but I view that as a plus and the main textbook’s character text has supplementary lessons specifically for going back over all the new characters in simplified script so you can learn that too.
I got it basically because I wanted something that I knew that if I put the time into it I would be literate. Currently about halfway through the beginner stage (so 1 semester of content) and it’s improved my chinese reading, spoken, and auditory comprehension dramatically relative to the time I put in. Audios are all online. Pdfs are all findable too, used volumes are super cheap since it is old and used to be popular. The character text is literally just the main textbook but entirely in Hanzi instead of pinyin/english.
>>2118040406 months isn't nearly enough time for it to be useful for your trip if you're using traditional input methods. you should focus on outputting and resources made for tourists like how to order at a restaurant or buy train tickets, etc.. doing the core2k is also pointless because you still won't be able to read after doing it. focus on relevant tourist words instead
>>211804163i certainly have my work cut out for me

>>211804252i look into it thanks
>>211803197>Also are you interested in spoken content or just reading?mostly reading but i dont mind doing some listening from time to time
>(Undeservedly, in the case of French)thats not true
>>211804679Learning to order at a restaurant for practical purposes takes about 5 minutes of study and a couple attempts at actual practice. I know this because that’s literally what I did in the month of time I spent there. Beyond that, I don’t mean dreaming spanish or AJATT style input. I mean meeting with a partner for an hour daily specifically to work through Genki 1/Tae Kim with a focus on practicing output, vocabmaxxing, AND a decent amount of input as icing on the cake.
It’s a reach but we’re considering doing AJATT while we’re out there even speaking to each other even if it’s grug speak.
>take train where?>shinjukuBeyond that you frankly don’t *need* much Japanese to be a tourist for a few weeks in Japan. I would know, because I did it. And Japanese people are the most remarkably forgiving and patient people with language learning I’ve ever encountered.
I’ll probably touristmaxx again last minute too desu. My plan long term is to do an alternating set of 6 month cycles with Japanese/Mandarin, wherein one gets a maintenance level of work while the other gets intense focus. If I reach my current level of Chinese in Japanese after 6 months ill be pretty happy with that.

>>211805103You'll be fine. It's basically the language you speak already. You'll just need to practise the noun cases a lot but you can easily grind those out if you set aside a small amount of time to it everyday.
>>211809988And there are lots more people who grow up speaking a language at home with their immigrant parents but not really speaking it and they can't go more than a few words without throwing in a phrase from their real native language.
>>211808793There's so much I want to tell you but I'm too tired and cba so here's what I'll say. First of all, there's never going to be a formula for this sort of thing. Realistically, trial and error is a very big part of it, and you should be able to see what works and what doesn't based on your results (speaking, writing, reading, listening). If you have the desire to be able to listen to and understand anything in the TL and are willing to try anything you will probably figure it out. The actual, underlying problem that brought you here asking about this topic is that your instincts are not telling you to learn when they could be. You are probably really looking for a task you can do without much trial and error but this is the lazy approach. Trial and error is a big part of learning. So try listening for a while with subtitles then turn them off and see what happens. Do it for both languages. What changed? And try listening at 0.5x speed. And try ankigooning every word you're going to hear before you hear it. And try doing 100 grammar exercises. And try listening to other things. And try lots of other stuff with the TL apart from watching TV. You need to put yourself in a lot of situations where you use the TL in a lot of different ways and do whatever you need to to overcome your obstacles.
>>211809913But, one of the main language learning tips I hear from normie people is watching TV shows in your TL with the subtitles in your TL. I remember that in middle school, I watched a lot of South Park and Friends with English subtitles, which taught me a lot about everyday English and many expressions, slangs, etc.
I wanna try it with French but I don't know any good TV shows in French.
>>211809988>The amount of people with stories like this is always disheartening as a full autodidact.I mean come on, it's English, it shouldn't be even considered a "foreign language" at this point.

>>211808793Understanding your TL in real time without subs requires a pretty high comprehension level. You need to slowly work your way up there by reading and listening to easy material first, building up your vocabulary and understanding one sentence at a time. You can also use tools like Language Reactor to pause and do lookups on TL subs, if you prefer to grind with native-level material.

How do you bother yourself to learn a language without a million escapist cartoons? I really don't think I can ever learn anything but Japanese at this rate. I'm really interested in Mandarin or even Cantonese but Chinktoons kind of suck (please prove me wrong if I am). CGDCT and other assorted escapist girls anime are really a uniquely Japanese thing, I guess. I just don't know how I'd ever immerse myself in any language without cartoons. it's wild that ESLs learn english from people who have terrible accents that they can't even tell are wrong
What is the recommended way to learn Arabic? Not specific methods or whatever, but is it best for people to usually learn Modern Standard Arabic then a dialect of their choosing? From what I understand, MSA has pretty limited everyday use and most Arabic "dialects" are actually full fledged languages with varying mutual intelligibility.
>>211859825That's such a clunky sentence. "ESL" should not be used as a noun to refer to people. You can instead say "ESL learners".
Also, "they can't even tell are wrong" is a very ambiguous reference. Are you referring to the ESL learners (or "ESLs" as you put it it) or the people with terrible accents in your sentence?
You are probably trying to say that the teachers' accents are so off that the learners can't recognize the flaws, but the sentence structure blurs this meaning.
Even though your English is mostly fine, you have to work on your writing. Not bad, anon!

I am blackpilled and overworked. I am putting Japanese off until I master a second European foreign language, in the meantime I will monitor the situation in Japan. Learning both French and German is wearing me out and the slow progress is demotivating me.

How do I get over the fear of trying to practice my Spanish with people? I have friends at work who know I am trying to learn Spanish and I will sometimes see them but I never want to stop them and chit chat a little. I worry about interrupting people from what they were doing. A friend explained to me that most people will actually tell you if they are busy so I should just leave it up to the person to tell me if they don't have time. If they don't have time and still choose to chit chat with me a bit, then thats on them. Its just hard for me to take that advice because I naturally don't want to bother people with my inane spanish yammering or whatever.
>>211875408>Any contemporary Spanish classics you read?I've yet to finish any proper classics, so I can't really recommend anything. I'm still at the "popular genre fiction" stage and I've only finished a couple Brandon Sanderson books. You can google around for recommendation lists with books on the easier side. I've found books like "El túnel" by Ernesto Sabato and "La sombra del viento" by Carlos Ruiz Zafón to be quite accessible but I eventually dropped them out boredom.
I'd say just follow your interests, or just jump straight into the Don if that's what you truly want to read and grind out the lookups using a monolingual dictionary since you're already a native.
>>2118765791. For fun, as a hobby.
