the best chinese language course is from Pimsleur. also don't use duolingo, the hello chinese app is better

That ironically makes it hard. Now you have to memorize rigid sentence templates and if you misplace a single word the entire meaning changes.

It’s tonal, which is arcane territory for IE speakers. Imagine the meaning of the word changing by the way you pronounce it.

The tones are easy. You can get the hang of them in 1 week. It's the shitty "alphabet" that makes Chinese hard. You can learn pinyin, which is the latinized version of written Chinese, but no one will take you seriously unless you memorize the thousands of characters in the writing system.
