We don't associate grammatical gender with biological gender so when we say "se uma pessoa te der flores, agradeça a ELA" (if a person gives you flowers thank "HER") I'm not using "her" because the person I'm refering to is a female, but because the noun "pessoa" (person) is feminine, the person could be a man and we still would use "ela"(her) because that's the pronoun we use to nouns in the feminine noun class.
