To become a truck driver, you basically need to have a driving license with category C (heavy truck) or CE (heavy truck with heavy trailer), as well as a valid professional competence certificate (YKB) if you are going to drive in commercial traffic. You must also be 21 years old (or 18 years old if you are training at a high school or with a licensed trainer) and have a valid driving permit. Plus a normal driving license of course.

The licensing and education itself to become a truck driver usually takes between 22 and 40 weeks, depending on the type of training and whether you choose to study full-time or part-time. The training includes both theory and practice, risk training, dangerous conditions driving and emergency procedures, and often includes on-the-job learning (actually for the most part, you spend 2-3 weeks as a "sit-in" and just watch a senior trucker do his/her job during that time.

Been a trucker for 11 years now.

do you see any hope for partial automation in the future or do you think trucking will remain a somewhat focus-intensive field for the next few decades?

I feel like if trucking was as easy as being a pilot where the truck was on autopilot 90% of the time it would be a FAR better career

I don't know anon. Trucking companies always need new drivers here. I've moved cities and even across the country now several times.
I've gotten a job within a month every single time.
Even back when I was green. It's one of the most "guaranteed" jobs here.
But I guess it's like with anything. Get experience. Call your local companies, ask them for an internship.

>how do you have time to post on 4chan?
1. I am on my vacation. 6 weeks of paid chilling.

2. A truck driver may drive a maximum of 9 hours per day, but this may be extended to 10 hours twice per week. The maximum driving time per week is 56 hours, and over a two-week period it may not exceed 90 hours. After every 4.5 hours of driving, the driver must take a break of at least 45 minutes, which may be divided into two breaks. In addition, a daily rest period of at least 11 consecutive hours must be taken within each 24-hour period.

So you see, we have a lot of free time to spend.

Also about automation within the field, I only see it becoming viable in limited scenarios. Like very particular routes (between lets say the harbor and the storage facility and such) that never change.
There's too many variables for automation to become a thing anytime soon.

You don't need to be smart to become a trucker.
It's not that kind of education. It's work-based. You learn by doing and memorizing.
I know people who can't do basic math who drive heavy trucks here.

Honestly, if you can't pass the trucking education here then you shouldn't be behind the wheel of a truck.

well I'm probably going to start the CDL training program in the USA in a few weeks and I'll tell you how it goes

I believe it takes a few weeks. there's a memorization / testing component and then a driving test I believe, along with various specific certifications for hazardous materials, driving people, driving refrigerated trucks, etc.

I don't really *need* to get a CDL because I have an engineering degree but the government offers free training so I may as well take it.

We already have automated trucks but instead of a driver it's just monitored by a dude in an office. My dad's co-worker moved to Texas to "drive" one when they were first being driven on the road then got laid off once they phased driver monitors out.

several ways
>trade school
only way to become one at 18. with passed trade school and an apprenticeship you can start trucking at 18. getting the license is part of the classes and they get the full alphabet.
>privately
total cost of the entire alphabet in license classes is ca 15k € and many do it privately, often in increments, one class at a time. im only at c1 but can drive up to full size if its titled as a machine not a truck.
>welfare office
they often retrain various tradies and such who suffered injuries into truckers or bus drivers.
>military
some, at a total random selection, get the full alphabet in classes done at a crash course there
you still need a few more for driving gasoline, propane, acid, dynamite etc but thoose are piece of cake compared.

is there any reason why a guy with a 360 degree camera wouldn't be able to see and respond to everything that a guy sitting in a cockpit of a truck would be able to do
Anonymous United States No.212630324 [Report] >>212630611
>>212630154
intuitively it should be pretty simple to implement this I think

like every signal you get as a trucker is a visual one, with some limited audio feedback too... from mostly the same destination too, it's not like your head is moving that much while you sit in a drivers seat.

so a camera setup that can swivel just like a driver's head with some mics could basically recreate the experience of sitting in the cockpit pretty easily I think.

idk. need to do more research on why remote piloting of vehicles isn't more popular in the USA.
Anonymous Norway No.212630433 [Report] >>212630505 >>212630568
>>212628721
i dare say it should require 40 years of training. a year is 52 weeks, how can you be trained not having experienced all of it?
i sense a difference in approach to it here, you think of a drivers license as a legal proof you are allowed to drive trucks, we see it as a legal proof you are actually competent in driving trucks under all possible conditions. there is a big difference there.
we just cant afford to have so many unexperienced drivers crashing all the time it blocks the entire country during winter, we are currently getting a lot of them from east europe.
Anonymous United States No.212630505 [Report] >>212630751
>>212630154
actually I know what the reason is

truckers don't just drive, they do a lot of handoff work at their destinations, check the status of the cargo, truck, etc, which obviously a remote pilot couldn't do.

but I think a system where a trucker sleeps while a remote pilot guides the truck over long haul journeys might be effective

all the monotonous driving work of being a trucker is taken out of the equation, allowing for more uptime for the truck. might be a good startup idea idk.

>>212630433
you can justify it all you want but europe is less competitive than the USA for a reason and a big reason is your approach to regulation.

you can continue to choose to lead the world in regulation if you want. that's great. the USA will lead the world in innovation instead

Well. Let me put one of my scenarios from last winter into this.
>going from Gothenburg central to Umeå up in the north
>about mid-trip the main highway was blocked due to a traffic accident
>instead of waiting for 10+ hours for it to clear I went on side roads just to keep my schedule
>lots of snow and ice
>at one point I had to stop and put the snow chains on just to make it up a hill which limits speed to 50km/h (law)
>once I was beyond the hill I had to stop and take them off again
>not much later, this time in an intersection I blew a tire because for some reason the Nokian Hakka we use don't like the double chains
>again, had to get out and swap that out
>then, just before I was entering Umeå on a one lane, one way a car had spun out and was stuck halfway in the ditch and I got out and helped that driver get moving

Being a trucker is more (a LOT more) than just driving. At least for us it is. Ask any driver with some experience and they will tell you the same thing. There's always something fucky that needs attention. A coupling not coupling, a leaky hose, punctures, other people etc.
An automatic truck becomes a useless roadblock in those cases until a repair/service person can reach it and fix it.

traveling tradie and i feel you. i understand trucking, i live my life on the same roads as you, i done some myself. dont know how many times i stopped and acted as early warning for truckers putting on chains or offered them a snack and a coffe when their truck was at 45* in the ditch. i also try my best not to drive the heavy trafficed roads, they suck during winter when pjotr and his man on slicks slide all over the place and they suck during summer when helmuth (78) fall asleep in his campervan.
oslo to my place east of trondheim, its e6 to løten then e3, then i continue east to trysil and follow 26 up north. hardly any traffic at all, just comfy cruising. there is even a dirtroad shotcut there that makes up the extra time i spendt.

you aren't wrong, and that is actually what it's about, isn't it?

social cohesion. enforcing a form of cultural boundaries through testing, setting the requirement artificially high to ensure that only people who are already part of the in-group can make it.

let me tell you right now this style of cultural enforcement won't work and in all honestly it's already lost. its not compatible with capitalism. business owners don't care for it and honestly customers don't either. customers *will not* pay more for a product just because it's made by people in your in-group or whatever. they will prefer that foreigner quasi-slaves do the truck driving over people like you *every* *single* *time*.

and no matter how many government restrictions people throw up, ultimately these businesses will lose. like they already have.

I'm not saying I love this system, it's just how capitalism works. Is this not how life in norway / sweden works?

london is hella based in that you can give the most obscure adress to a black cab and they will get you there, cheaper than other services. then you swipe your oyster card on the way home.

About ~10 weeks. I went to a shithole "school" that was mostly people on day release from the local jail. But, the school only used Manuals so I would get my license without the restriction. Getting the truck forward is easy, getting it to back up took about 20-40 tries for me to really get the hang of it. Then I realized I could just practice with a uhaul trailer, since it's the same manuvers with the wheel, and the rest was pretty easy.

The test itself is kinda meaningless since the inspection part is just an english test and anyone can drive a truck forward without clipping the trailer. The only hard park is backing it, but it's either a blindside parallel park or dock. If you use the Salinas DMV it's always a dock. You can also just watch the Salinas DMV exams from right outside on the street, it's not a secret location. The San Jose, Fremont, Oakland and Sacramento aren't secret either.

>>212632119
The catch is whoever you're paying off. Usually, Texans (if you are actually a citizen of Texas and NOT mexican) will just pay the examiner $1000 for their Permit. Then, under TX laws, working for a year on a Permit allows them to apply for the full License which is valid in all 50 states. I have no idea if Texas has bothered to patch it but given all the shit, stupid drivers that come from there probably not. Texas doesn't prosecute illegal truck driving anyway, they let teenagers drive trucks there all the time, and I have personally witnessed this on many occasions. Texas don't care, Oklahoma don't care, Arkansas don't care and Louisiana don't care.

In this way the "catch" is that you can't drive anything requiring placards, can't drive to Mexico and can't drive to a socialist communist nanny state like California, Illinois, Colorado or Michigan where all the freight is. But Texas is pretty big and Trump is relocating over half their drivers.
