Ginger ale was invented by a Canadian. If a non-fermented carbonated soft drink has the word "beer" or "ale" in its name, you know it's some sort of American abomination. Real ginger beer comes from England, it's yeast-fermented and hence alcoholic.

It's how companies get around the sugar tax. Soft drinks with no sugar taste like shit and don't sell that well, so the compromise was a 50/50 split between sugar and artificial sweeteners.
Pretty much every big company does it now, but it's not universal.
