They considered themselves the centre of the world and tried to assert imperial rule over everyone they could, and they weren't good enough to ever expand past their immediate borders. They automatically recognised ancient Rome as at least their equal. Every conflict with Europeans resulted in the Chinese being humiliated. Their economic growth today is entirely down to western capitalism and western trade. All they've ever had is a large population and trinkets to trade.

They could have, random Chinese merchant fleets were able to overthrow SEA states and even Sri Lanka.
