"American Adjunct Lager" is shit because it's made to be cheap swill, drunk quickly and to excess.
If you're not big on the IPA end of the craft beers, it's probably partly because some of these cunts don't have tastebuds and couldn't balance a beer with a level and shims, and partly because you might just not like CTZ-Citra hops or the style.
They make some great porters, stouts, non-rice/corn lagers, Belges, lagered-ales, aled-lagers (steam beer).
Their great stuff's great. Their shit's world-class for being bottom shelf.

Citrusy sure, but American hops tend to be bred for higher cohumulone counts - sharper, more bitter, so you can get more with less. Cascade in all its overabused grapefruit fight in a spruce grove glory has about twice the alpha acids by weight as landrace/noble hops and EKG.
It's mostly in how they're used. If you add them earlier in the boil, you get less sublety of character as terpenes break down and oxidize. American flavour characteristics are more about late additions, lots of mango, citrus, and evergreen (myrcene, limonene, pinene). but you do wind up with things like Santiam that are great when used "wrong" (early-ish) for a more woody-peppery-floral English profile.
New England's an anomaly - hops so late they're just blended in after mashing. Saaz works really well for this kind of thing in a dark wheat beer with a bit of caraway or sumac.
