If you like that style I think you should look up "Art Deco". It was done through out the country in the 20's and 30's but the real quality examples of Art Deco buildings were limited because it was too damn labor intensive to build as it required a lot of actual talented artisans and not just construction workers. Then we had the World Wars and Depression to deal with so that killed it for good.

Too bad most of the buildings got replaced over the years.

We have a few buildings left but they are showing their age. One even got converted to a Korean Christian church. lol

Some of the better examples of Art Deco left in the LA area.

When money wasn't an object, Art Deco buildings were absolutely beautiful.

This is one of my favorite buildings. They just don't make them like this anymore.

alot of the art deco buildings were built under the new deal during the great depression. What killed it off is the post war real estate boom and the change in curricular in architecture programs. A lot of the modernist architects in Europe found refuge here and helped create the modern architecture curricular.

these look very neat
if I remember right art deco was partially inspired by egyptian architecture, which was at that moment very trendy thanks to the archaeological expeditions that started during the xix century. You can kind of see it

back then labour was cheap and materials were expensive, now it's the other way around, so we get larger and more complex buildings (technically) but with far less labour and far more pre-made, standarised elements. Maybe with robotics one day we will see a reversal of this trend.

Los Angeles in Raymond Chandler's novels actually looks good, despite the fact that he described the dark criminal side of the city

Even our cars back then followed the Art Deco design language.

How can this and the Empire State Building belong to the same architectural movement?
Anonymous United States No.212989014 [Report]
>>212988710
yes, it was Egyptian inspired and we even have blatant examples of it like this installment at the Hoover Dam.

it doesn't, the example he posted was more early modernism.

There are some newer constructions that use Art Deco inspiration and its wonderful but even more expensive to do.

This is the Atlas Bar in Singapore.

those pictures have a tint that affects how they feel.
shape and color/tint are different feelings mixing together.
what we associate with eras is mostly the tint of the photographs from that era. sepia is just one tint.
imagine those shapes, but not the colors, as if you were standing in front of them right now. give them the color of "now" things.
they would feel very modern, not at all "old".
