I thought the point of dropping nukes was to show the Soviet that America had the upper hand. Japan wasn't going to surrender after two nukes, but they immediately surrendered (to the US) after the Soviet started invading Manchuria and moving closer to Japan. They'd rather surrender to the US than being invaded by the communists, and the nukes actually saved their face and gave them reason to stop the war efforts. Had it not been for the nukes, the common soldiers won't accept losing and would continue fighting until Japan flattened by US and Soviet invasions.
