WAIT WHAT?????? The Geunjeongjeon Hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace in the photo is the largest purely wooden structure in East Asia (excluding pagodas), if we exclude wooden buildings that have been modernized with steel and concrete.

What counts as being part of the structure here? The small buildigns next to it aswell or just the large central building?

It's a large central building in the center.

It's a landmark in Korea, but unfortunately, it's not well-known.

The large building visible over the wall in the back left is Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, where the king used to hold banquets with his officials.
The large central building is Geunjeongjeon Hall, which was used for the king’s wedding, receptions for foreign envoys, and morning assemblies etcs.
Everything else in the photo consists of the walls surrounding the area.

The pagoda visible in the back right is a modern structure it’s part of the Gyeongbokgung Palace Museum.
That area originally housed palace buildings belonging to Gyeongbokgung, but they were all destroyed by the Japanese during the colonial period. Today, reconstruction is difficult because there are no surviving pictures and paintings of what those buildings looked like. As a result, a small royal palace museum was built there instead

The issue is that Gyeongbokgung was the royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty, a kingdom that upheld Neo-Confucian ideals. Yet a Buddhist-style pagoda has been erected within the palace grounds. This has led to continued criticism, but since it functions as a museum, the government currently has no plans to remove it.

Include mongolia and vietnam

Although those comparisons are unfair, i compared the INNER palace of Japan in the 10th century and its as big as my medieval city center

If you include the outer palace it's much more than its size in than my city in the 20th century, disregarding the surrounding Kyoto buildings (my city is the 8th largest in France)

And then everything burned down

The fact that everything burnt down regularly makes comparisons stupid because each civlisation had to cope with downsizing when they faced war

Based

Funfact) Gyeongbokgung Palace is currently the most visited tourist attraction in Korea by foreign tourists and in 2024, it surpassed India’s Taj Mahal in visitor numbers 6.4 million compared to 6.1 million.

(The photo is a list of Korea's most visited tourist destinations by foreigners. However, I won't translate it separately since you probably won't be very curious)

The current Gyeongbokgung Palace was rebuilt by Heungseon Daewongun in 1864 and roof of Geunjeongjeon in early Joseon Gyeongbokgung Palace was covered with blue tiles (cheonggiwa)

The two photos show the following: the bottom photo is the unearthed roof tile remains at Gyeongbokgung, and the top photo shows Geunjeongjeon digitally recolored in Photoshop to match the colors of the broken tiles.
