the EU will definitely get more than 15% tariffs, this trade deal leyen agreed to will not hold. europe will not invest over a trillion in the usa and our farmer lobby will not allow american products on the european markets. cars, maybe. trump will soon flip out when he learns of the EU not fully fullfilling the deal as he imagines it and will slap higher tariffs on the EU. switzerland might actually have lower tariffs than the EU when this happens.

We are the worlds largest exporter of refined gold bars. We do import all of the raw gold, for example we buy pretty much all the raw gold mined in the us, refine it to 99.999% pure, cast them in pretty bars and sell them back to the US as the largest customer of gold bars in the world. The selling back now costs 39%. But then it costs 0% to sell them back to Mexiko or Canada.
So yeah, I don't get it either, we make mostly stuff Americans don't make and really need or want, and we buy a large surplus of services, like software, movies, insurance, banking and what not, so we used to be even.

What do you mean by work?

If by work you mean cause a manufacturing renaissance in the United States, that would be a very strong 'no'. But the thing is the goal isn't even to cause manufacturing growth, the goal is to revive midwestern towns, and that certainly is not happening because all manufacturing growth is going to happen in the south.

No one young wants to move to a dying rust belt town, and no company is going to open up a factory there.

I don't think you quite understand the appeal of Trump.

The true appeal of Trump isn't that he's a right wing radical populist like Alex Jones, its that's he is almost a blank slate for people to project their own views onto. Trump can both make himself seem like a reasonable moderate and a right wing populists. People will vote for Trump because they believe he is lying about the things they disagree with and they think he in reality agrees with them.

Ultimately, Trump cultivated his persona over a 30 year period before becoming president, and it is not easy to replicate. His pre-2015 persona is integral to his popularity.

The loopholes are intentional, it'll just be sold to Canada or Mexico and then resold to America under the lower tariffs. Same reason we leave India open as a market for China and Russia to do business through to get around tariffs - we don't want to cut them off, we just want to track everything they're doing and take advantage of them.

>I don't get it either
The US is transferring from Republic to Empire and this is the start of the Imperial Tithes, basically. In general, views on agriculture are shaped by what agriculture was like 100 years ago rather than what its like today.

In USA, you'll still see people claim that 'rural people feed urban people' when in reality only 1.5% of our population works in the industry and grain production is almost entirely mechanized with very advanced technology while vegetable/fruit production relies on seasonal migrant labor for harvesting.

trumps issue is that you and us, we are not buying enough american products and we are not buying american farm products because our farmer lobbies have succesfully lobbyed for a vast array of regulations, requirements, subsidies, tarrifs and other trade barriers that are all intended on keeping foreign farm products out.

The stated purpose is to grow manufacturing. Of course tariffs on metals aren't going to help that, and for American manufacturing to be competitive we would need globalized supply chains.

The real reason is that the midwest of our country was deindustrialized leading to collapse of cities and towns and this is a futile attempt to correct that. Of course, all manufacturing growth in USA is going to be in the south, as it currently is, not midwestern towns that have no young population.

Its not really about encouraging domestic consumption, its about bringing back cities like Youngstown.

You can do 3 things with tariff
a) make money as a tax, optimally you keep the tariff low and encourage trade so people buy a lot and you make a lot of money
b) protect your own market, either because the farmers demand so or you want to protect jobs and industries that would go away otherwise and you want to stay, like steel or shipping for strategic reasons.
c) fight a trade war with guys that tax you.

but somehow none of this applies, 39% kills all trade, there is no money to be made. We don't have any significant agricultural exports to the US except some chocolate and expensive cheese, we don't compete in any industries with the Americans and are already the largest per capita investors in the US economy, and we had no beef with them, in fact we have 0% tariffs on American industrial goods, you can sell them on the free market here like everybody else. Also it is very unlikely that small and mid sized Swiss companies will now suddenly storm to the US and open factories and train workers how to build precision equipment and rolexes.

Some of managed to pivot to services (Pittsburgh in USA for example, Manchester might be another but I don't know enough about the UK to know for sure), but overall yes it is futile, some places just don't have an economic reason to exist anymore, but not everyone is willing to accept that.

Lower labor costs, right to work law preventing unionization, business friendly environment, young people are willing to move there, direct access to Gulf of Mexico/Atlantic, mild winters.

AC basically unlocked the regions potential.

Yeah high end manufacturing makes sense in high income countries but its not going to employ as many people as manufacturing in the 1950's.

A lot of people also don't quite get that globalism isn't the only reason for the decline of these towns, but also technological progress and in the case of USA competition from the south.

Its also worth noting that the south has a bunch of deindustrialized mill towns since textile manufacturing used to be big here but no one cares about that and the millworkers were viewed as an underclass in the 20th century.

Greenville-Spartanburg would be a good example of a metro area that was once big in textile manufacturing but today is more into BMW manufacturing (also services).

Austrians speak German with a slight accent (Some weird mountain areas actually speak Baiuvarian, but those are few), we speak Swissgerman, has it's own words and grammar. It's like complaining you don't understand Dutch.

Yes, but it is well paid jobs and while the skill set for the manufacturing is higher nowadays, there is still plenty of low skill jobs down the line like truck driver, storage guy and so on, and we need those jobs to keep low skill people busy and well fed.
