The decrease in birth rates has to do with better living standards and acess to proper education, which push for more individualistic lifestyle since kids are seen as a burden in order to pursue a career or simply being able to freely enjoy life, or as a great responsibility which can scare many. The birthrate decline is happening everywhere, even in Africa, because the poverty rate and living standard have been consistently rising since post ww2 everywhere in the world. The pie doesnt stay the same size, it has been getting bigger.

Also, investing in commodities have always been part of human society, the idea of accumulating resources and investing them existed even 2000 years ago. The fact that we're not having it as good as our grandpas because of certain policies and corporate lobbying, that's simply an another thing.
